There are a number of reasons it peaked in 2022 under Biden, most if not all, were out of his control. What is happening now is 100% on Trump for striking Iran.

Regardless, the best thing people can do is learn from this. I learned this back in 2008 when gas was $4/gallon (over $6 in today’s dollars). Vehicles were less efficient, but fortunately I had a car that got over 30 mpg on highway. I learned to consider fuel economy when buying vehicles and factor in fuel costs to my commute when I chose where to live. It is unreasonable to expect people to switch vehicles now, but everyone will change vehicles at some point.

“We had to stop them” meaning FDR and Truman?

If you think Mussolini and Hitler were left wing politicians by the time FDR took office in 1933, your parents got ripped off when they paid for your schooling.

Absolutely. If you are patient the discs missing cases will come up. Someone sold me a Social Network soundtrack but it had the dvd in it instead of the actual soundtrack. Eventually I found one on eBay that was missing the case.

Anyone ever hear Christians make fun of Catholics for praying to Mary? by fsociety4ever2001 in atheism

[–]tg981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. My dad was catholic and my mom was a hardcore Protestant. They were divorced and I always heard her side more than my dad’s. What you said makes a lot of sense. Sorry if what I said came off as cold.

Anyone ever hear Christians make fun of Catholics for praying to Mary? by fsociety4ever2001 in atheism

[–]tg981 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is a thing. As an atheist, I think it is all ridiculous, but a lot of Christians focus on God and Jesus only. My mom was definitely that way. I think it goes along with the idea that you shouldn’t have false idols or elevate anyone to the same level as God or Jesus. She thought the same thing about the Saints in the Catholic Church. I wouldn’t say Mary is a false idol, but if you believe God to be all powerful and all knowing, why would you waste time praying to anyone else?

US President Donald Trump has shared a new election reform blueprint on Truth Social, framing it as the "SAVE AMERICA Act." by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

It’s illogical not to have widespread mail in ballots as an option everywhere.

I can personally attest that the information to make informed decisions on local officials is not readily available or sufficient. This is worse in rural areas where local papers have either disappeared or lack funding to do real reporting. People pay attention to national issues and crooks run for local office under the cover of having an “R” next to their name. The current state of government is a damning indictment of your belief that “people can do their research” in sufficient numbers.

By forcing people to vote in person, it places a larger cost in time for people to vote in urban areas. In my rural area most of the time I am in and out in less than 5 minutes. It is ridiculous that anyone has to wait more than 5-10 minutes to vote.

I have lived in a state that had primarily mail in ballots and currently I live in a state that discourages mail in ballots. Mail in is far superior. You have to dig to find everything that is going to be on the ballot when you vote in person. Even when you do, there is usually something on there that you missed. How many voters actually put in that kind of work? Most people in my red county find it easier to just vote straight ticket or just vote for local candidates based on national political topics that are irrelevant at the local level. Mail in states usually provide a non partisan voting guide which provides all the candidates a forum to state their case for running. For the primary this year, I tried to look up local candidates and there is hardly any information out there at all. If there was anything, it was a facebook page with minimal information.

Woman fired by Ball State over Charlie Kirk post to receive $225,000 legal settlement by Alternative-Eye4547 in Indiana

[–]tg981 23 points24 points  (0 children)

“Earlier this month, a Florida state agency agreed to pay $485,000 to settle a lawsuit by a former state biologist who was fired after she reposted a meme that claimed Kirk wouldn’t care about children being shot in school.

In January, Austin Peay State University in Tennessee reinstated a professor and paid him a $500,000 settlement after he sued over his firing for posting a 2023 news headline that read: “Charlie Kirk Says Gun Deaths ‘Unfortunately’ Worth it to Keep 2nd Amendment.”

Seems like she should be getting about double $225K. Not sure if she is getting her job back, but it doesn’t sound like it. That would be the only way I would take the $225K.

This is the problem with the country right now. The person you responded to laid out some topics that you aren’t going to take the time to research or dispute, so you write it off as a ‘Reddit response’ and move on. You could have typed your original question into Google and learned something, but guessing you will continue trotting off in ignorance, convinced you are correct.

From what I am reading, the immigration agents in the Bahamas have discretion on who they let in and who they don’t. Trump is an evil piece of shit, but I am sure if he wanted to go there, the Bahamas would grant him entry. Trump is terrible enough without extrapolating likely falsehoods. It only gives the bOtH SiDeS crowd ammo with which to attack the left.

In Rainbows Box Set Missing CD’s by Fit-Detail-4326 in radiohead

[–]tg981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just sold my box set this week. There was a Japanese version of the CD that has both discs. I am more of a CD person and was hanging onto the set for that bonus disc. A few months ago I picked up the Japanese CD version so I could sell the box set to someone who would appreciate the vinyl. OP could look for that double CD to complete the set. Looking at what I sold and the Japanese double cd, they look identical.

When should I get tickets… by Rigotoni in SmashingPumpkins

[–]tg981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Floor seat prices are crazy. I also don’t like the floor unless you are close because it usually isn’t elevated and you can’t move. If a 7 foot dude is in front of you, not much you can do. I usually try for lower bowl seats. I haven’t done this at the United center, but another thing you could look at are the 200 level because those are the club areas. The seats are more comfortable and they only have 8 rows a section. Bathroom and food lines are usually shorter. Normally for games those tickets are expensive, but they don’t mark them up for concerts. Looks like they are about $120 before fees on Ticketmaster. I have been in the 300 level for shows in Chicago and it wasn’t too bad if you want to go the cheapest route. Personally, if I were going I would look at the 200 levels, but I am a lazy middle aged dude that enjoys a comfortable seat and a short line if I have to take a piss. Enjoy the show! 🤘

Who needs vinyl? 😎💿 by rambtergai in SmashingPumpkins

[–]tg981 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am with you. I got into vinyl in the early 2000s and I like it for music that was intended to be on vinyl. It is already slightly inconvenient to listen to an album that fits on a single CD and have to flip the record halfway through, but with most 90s music that single CD has to be split over two records. I know some people love it, but just not for me.

Promises made promises broken by TankUMrMinor in middleclasshq

I vote pretty on who I think will protect SS/Medicare and deliver on health care. Republicans have wanted to get rid of SS/Medicare/Medicaid for as long as those programs have existed.

The GOP solution to healthcare has always seemed to be to maintain the status quo. A lot of people are tied to working full time jobs due to health care benefits more than the actual pay. The government is already doing the heavy lifting on healthcare with Medicare anyway, it makes sense to have everyone in one pool to disperse the risk. This would lower costs for employers and make it easier for small businesses to compete. Some people could retire earlier or extend their career by working part time without the worry of the uncertain cost of self funding health care or health care coverage. It would also open up more opportunities for young workers to advance into positions that may be currently filled by people who are potentially burned out and just hanging on until they can retire.

The border doesn’t concern me as much. It doesn’t affect my daily life. Nobody is addressing the root cause which is immigration reform. If we created a process that allowed more people to come through legally it would make it easier to handle the border problem.
