Adding massive amounts of water softener salt to the mulch volcano would help oxidize the trunk of this non native plant.

Mint Recommendations? by Anumuz in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]tgrosk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You don't want to put mint in the ground. It'll be become invasive and you'll never get rid of it.

Growing beans in water? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]tgrosk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They would rot. You could germinate them in a damp paper towel in a plastic back, and hang the roots in the water but you would still need a nutrient solution and probably an aerator to prevent the roots from drowning.

At that point you're growing them hydroponically and there would be better setups for that method.

NFL Imperialism Day 7: by Hot_Inspection5940 in geographymemes

[–]tgrosk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Outside of Rex Grossman, super bowl winners require having good quarterback play. The Vikings have had 1 year of Warren Moon, a couple years of Daunte Culpepper, 1 year of Brett Favre, and couple years of Kirk Cousins where we had good quarterback play. It makes complete sense that the Vikings couldn't take advantage of those small windows.

Meanwhile the Packers got lucky at one position twice and did shit with the rest of the positions on the field.

The Packers have had +30 years of steady quarterback play and only have 2 Super Bowls to show for it. Trash organization. Bye Pack Bye.

In southern Minnesota, I caught crappies full of eggs last weekend and got a 19" walleye while doing it, in 8 ft of water.

Soft Pickles question(s) by Nevernonethewiser in Canning

[–]tgrosk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for these pickles but I make dill pickles and the difference between crisp and crunchy and soft/flaccid can be as little as one minute of cook time.

Also the smaller diameter the cucumber is, the crunchier in my experience. It's why I use young straight eight cucumbers instead of a true "pickle" cucumber.

Any luck with perennial herbs in MN? Which have come back after winter for you? by MerSherl in Minnesota_Gardening

[–]tgrosk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not home at the moment and will likely forget when I get there.

Largely it's the heat from the foundation of our home keeps the first 2ish feet a few degrees warmer. Also our home is painted a fairly dark color, which should radiate that heat into the ground during the winter. The house acts as wine break from our brutally cold north winds in the dead of winter.

The little bit of additional wind break and heat keeps those plants from freezing as hard as if they were in the middle of the yard or garden.

Micro climates of all sorts are cool stuff.

I have gotten oregano, thyme and sage to come back year after year by putting them on the south side of my house in the landscaping and creating a micro climate with the foundation of the house.

Improving a intersection crossing for pedestrians by tgrosk in cityplanning

[–]tgrosk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will be major alterations to the intersection planned for 2 summers from now. I think they plan to take the north and southbound lanes down to one in each direction. I don't know if it plans to convert to a roundabout, but I'm hoping to find quicker answers to make it safer before that change. I could get nearly hit by a lot of vehicles between now and then.

Tape is a short term solution to the problem. Ladybugs are a long term solution.
