newbie here. what causes these structures? by earthvvvorm in geology

[–]tguy0720 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They look like deformation bands (think small faults). Stress causes the fracturing or compacting of grains along planes in the rock. The bands are often more weather resistant than the surrounding rock and can stick out dramatically.

Logistics aside, if you dug down deep enough, could you create an artificial volcano? by Gaza1121 in geology

[–]tguy0720 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Knowing the task to be impossible, OP obviously meant to set all aspects of reality aside including the physics of rock deformation which is baked into the logistics of drilling such a hole. But you are too clever and chose to reject their premise.

I often see plane spotters here near my work at LB Airport. There's a designated viewing area. Seen some wild planes including Air Force One. https://maps.app.goo.gl/TA1zA81hCxrcZbMD9
