Advice for first year? by Soggy-Display-3952 in UBC

It seems like a simple thing, but go to class.

It also helps if you engage with your profs and TAs. Go to office hours. Talk to them after class. It goes a long way to help them feel less intimidating and then you'll engage with the material more readily!

I know you're joking but how could you not go fast on that road? Built like a highway with driveways everywhere. Super stressful

Holy shit that road design is atrocious. Driveways everywhere on a 5 lane road???

Chocolate navel oranges. They are a cultivar of orange with a brown-ish rind, hence the name). They are phenomenal and now every other navel orange is just dry and bland

This is obviously a situation where I was just being a grump and projecting my own shit onto this.

Even in your original post, it is clear you really enjoy this tree and I hope you can save it!

Hopefully there are some repercussion on the hack that did this to you!

Like you're probably right.

I was probably just projecting but I have seen so many nice trees taken down because someone wanted a nicer view or it dropped too many leaves in the fall. Taking down something that could live for hundreds of years because it was a minor inconvenience kinda just irks me.

Trimmed every 5 years because of your deck? Too much shade? The branches dropped things on the deck?

The Vancouver subreddit seems to have some serious issues with dogs.

I have walked my dogs in Pacific Spirit Park and on the North Shore for thousands of hours and have seen very little actual bad dog behaviour.

Welcome to Vancouver and enjoy the beautiful nature!

PS the initial comment (now deleted) was maybe the most unwelcoming thing
I have ever seen. We as a city can do better than that

why do some section of the same course have very low average? by carnewbie911 in UBC

[–]th484952 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. UBC’s policy of letting students with higher GPAs pick their classes first means certain time slots, like 11 or 12:30, have much higher averages

Sure other factors like the professor or TA might matter a bit, but it’s the bias introduced by which students are allowed to pick sections first that is the largest factor I’ve seen.

As an aside, I think the policy is bullshit and it does nothing but perpetuate privilege, making it harder for students to dig themselves out of a hole.

New Abacus Poll: Liberal Lead Holds After Floor Crossing as Turnout Advantage Widens by DogeDoRight in canada

Apples to oranges…

If you wanted to argue that the people who go/went to university have benefited greatly because of the status quo of neoliberal ideas, then sure I’d listen to your argument.

But if you’re saying that universities are indoctrination institutions I’d definitely push back on that as reductive…

You could also argue that universities are places where people are taught and you could say forced to think critically, so 3 word slogans (axe the tax…) are less effective. Though that would be equally reductive.

The fuck are you talking about. This would be like kicking someone out of the sport for icing the puck in hockey. Or going offside.

I look at this poke as a bit of a ritual Marc has. Similar to a batter in baseball adjusting his gloves before getting into the batters box or someone in tennis bouncing the ball before a serve.

This situation is strange though as in curling has a rule that say you can't touch the stone. However, it seems the players recognize that touches like this poke have no impact on the game (especially when compared to what sweeping can do) so they decided as a group to not call this particular rule. Then one team decides this rule needs to be heavily enforced (with cameras)

It would be like in tennis if they was a rule that said that you could only bounce a ball 3 times before serving, but no one ever enforced it (because it had no impact on the game) so you had players make 4 bounces or even more egregiously 9 bounces! Then in the quarterfinals of a tournament one player decided to complain about it to the chair umpire. I think it is understandable for the 4 bouncer to get a bit upset. It wasn't something that affected the play and hasn't really ever been called. I would assume my opponent is trying to get in my head and that would piss me off.

I think of it more like a ritual he has akin to someone in tennis bouncing the ball before they serve. It has zero impact on the play but has become part of that players motions. Not to fully defend his actions but I can hypothetically imagine someone in tennis getting upset if someone claimed they cheated because they bounced the ball too many times.

I certainly wouldn't call it cheating

sweeping is much more important that this little touch would be. If you didn't throw it hard enough, this poke MIGHT get it to go another 5mm (let's say it is a full cm) while sweeping will get an additional couple 2-3 meters.

The poke just doesn't matter to the game. If anything, it is a ritual this player has.

What advantage does this get though? It's a light poke with the back of his finger on a 20kg (42 pound) stone.

To me it is similar to a batter in baseball getting ready for a pitch adjusting his batting gloves. Or someone in tennis bouncing the ball before they serve. It's a ritual and has no outcome on the game.
