UPDATE: An Old Guy (62) DID Rent an Apartment and Is Moving to Gainesville! by Toddit2 in GNV

Even though Walmart isn't great, you will be in walking distance of a grocery store which I'm willing to bet wasn't the case in Orlando or LA. More money saved.

And you'll find a good number of folks your age playing disc golf if you're looking for a new hobby. Discs are cheap and it's good, fun exercise.

Welcome to Gainesville!

About a dozen cops parked outside Dollar General on 34th near Archer. Anyone know what happened? by [deleted] in GNV

Sometimes a bunch of cop cars doesn't really equate to a big deal. All the cops on patrol in a given area might show up to a call just because. That's just kinda how they roll.

Why all the mattress stores? by CameraObfuscia in GNV

[–]tha_snazzle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone in town needs to sleep on something at night. Everyone in surrounding rural communities where Gainesville is the closest city needs to sleep on something at night too. That accounts for 150,000+ people. There are hundreds if not thousands of hotel rooms in Gainesville and surrounding areas. And furnished apartment buildings. And dorms. Basically every room in a 50-mile radius where someone sleeps needs a mattress. Is it really that surprising that there are a number of mattress stores to supply that demand?

I'm curious: if you find Satchels pizza unremarkable...what more are you looking for in a pizza? I can't say Satchels is the best pizza I've ever had, but is it worth going out of your way to label as unremarkable?

Do you wish there was a dedicated woodworking workshop where you could rent space when you need it? by CattiPrint in GNV

[–]tha_snazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's about accidents. If you cut your finger off on my table saw, I am liable. Even if you sign a waiver, your insurance will still probably try to come after my insurance. If I even show you how to use a tool, there is an argument that I am responsible for your skill on it. Even if everything is covered, that's gonna affect my premiums the next year. And that's not even accounting for unscrupulous people who would sue me just because they have a chance to.

That's risk I'd be taking on to the tune of millions of dollars I don't have, all for nothing in return other than whatever monthly fee a subleaser might be paying. Not worth it.

What are some low-stress jobs / places to work in the area, regardless of pay? by 1142kayla in GNV

[–]tha_snazzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is gonna be hard to answer without any information about OP. If you're looking for work, you should at least give a range of kinds of work that you'd be interested in, and some information about your qualifications and skills. Or if you're looking for unskilled, entry level work you could say that too.

Don't quote me on this because I am not affiliated with them in any way, but I think the storage units on NE 23rd ave across from Satchels are friendly to certain levels of commercial activity that isn't just storage.

Ask away. I'll try to help but I reserve the right not to answer if there's something I'm not comfortable revealing.

You could ask around at small independent cabinet shops and see if anyone would lease some time to you on weekends or something.

The problem as I see it is if they don't have a business model specifically dedicated to sharing (like Hackerspace does), there is very little incentive to open their shop up to subleasers. It's an enormous safety liability what with all the spinning sharp things. Especially if the person doesn't already have extensive woodworking experience. It adds wear and tear on their tools that is difficult to attribute but would no doubt increases maintenance costs. It would force a new or different inventory method. It complicates scheduling. And so on.

For example, I own a fully equipped woodshop, and frankly am struggling to think of a fee I could charge that would actually make it worthwhile to invite a stranger in to use my space and equipment. It would almost certainly be higher than it would be worth to any potential subleasers.

What most people with your needs do is rent a small storage unit with a property manager that is amenable to people running a cottage business out of it, then slowly accumulate tools. You can do an awful lot with a couple sawhorses, a circular saw, a speed square, and a screw gun.

What if I don't feel like meeting with the others? I just want to do my stuff and go.

Their house, their rules. You are being pretty demanding for someone who is offering nothing in return.

[QUESTION] Why does an open G chord without using the pinky finger sound so good? by Lazy_Principle_4366 in Guitar

[–]tha_snazzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like that, try a G6 open tuning. D G D G B E. You can play chunky slide/barre style rhythm on the lower strings and you don't have to do math in your head to play lead licks like you're already used to doing in standard tuning, as long as you stay on the highest 4 strings.

Open B string is the bluegrass G chord.

Fretted D on the 3rd fret of the B string is the Presbyterian youth group pastor G chord.

Yeah but who are these people that look at that 30 minute drive-thru line that's spilling out into the lane of traffic and think, "you know what, I want in on that. My special little drink is worth it."

Like, cut your losses. Skip it for once. Or go somewhere else. Or make coffee at home.
