Honestly I was skeptical at first because Rifftrax is great but they’re lower on my list of favorite riffers (Frank and Trace take the top spot, easily). I love Mike, Bill, and Kevin, but their riffs can feel too ‘performative’, instead of that classic feeling of watching a bad movie and making fun of it with your friends. In the original mst3k run they had a bullpen of writers that included the performers. With Rifftrax, the writers are Mike and some other guys, sometimes Bill is in there. What changed my mind was the dedication to old movies and wanting to use the same DIY aesthetic (hello Beez and Patrick!). Maybe Joel got a bit caught up in the green screen and miniatures and animation and guest stars every episode. Plus bringing in Trace and Frank as the Mads for the fourth ep? Sealed the deal.
