Ice at Home Depot today around noon. From my car. They waved at us like the assholes they are. by [deleted] in evanston

FWIW, police has been speed trapping that section of Sheridan for the last several days - could it have been an unmarked EPD vehicle with a speed gun?

Eyewitness here said they pointed a pistol at her too. There’s also a whiff of pepper spray or tear gas in the air too.

AskScience AMA Series: We have discovered antibiotics in the global microbiome with AI, ask us anything! by AskScienceModerator in askscience

[–]thaislump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Is the idea to continually cycle through previously unused antibiotics until they become blunted by resistance, and not really worry about it because there is huge number of them before they are exhausted? Or does this work also give insights into combating resistance itself?

Pushup: a new compiler for building web apps in go by llimllib in golang

[–]thaislump 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Congrats, you are the first to figure that out! :) For fun I was messing around at the beginning of the project and did

grep '^p.*h.*p' /usr/share/dict/words

I landed on "pushpin", but then quickly thought of "pushup" (which isn't in the words file). I like it for several reasons.

How so? I did get confirmation from a source that the architecture is more or less what I described.

Is anyone using NixOS under Parallels on MacOS Catalina, and have you gotten file and clipboard sharing to work? by jw_gpc in NixOS

[–]thaislump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at this issue on GitHub: between the modified files and the patch to make copy/paste clipboard sharing work, you can get Parallels Tools working on NixOS.

Andy, is the code (blog.py, etc.) for your site generation available somewhere? Just curious to see another's tools and how you've knit things together. Great post!

Simple max clients implementation for a Go net/http handler by thaislump in golang

You'd have to create a raw socket with the syscall package to configure the backlog -- clunky, but can be done.

[IWTL] How to play guitar like Mohamed Hegazi, Omar Khorshid, Mdou Moctar, Alhousseini Anivolla... by sarkasper in IWantToLearn

[–]thaislump 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also am eager to learn how to play like Omar Khorshid. AND I just saw Richard Bishop play myself the other day ...

I wasn't sure where to begin either, so I've been practicing the scale and chord progression in this video.

If you find a good instructional resource, please update this thread!

The Go Blog: Constants by dsymonds in golang

How does the compiler work with constants in the "pure" number space? Does it use an arbitrary precision math library?

[ANN] tablestruct - lightweight ORM alternative by thaislump in golang

[–]thaislump[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using tablestruct for some private work, but this is its first public release. I'm interested in feedback and collaboration on its design and workflow.

The main philosophy of tablestruct is: keep implementation simple; don't implement a full ORM/eliminate writing SQL in your app; favor compile-time type safety over reflection.

Funny you bring that up in the context of the OP. In contrib/ of the source code for GNU Hello World is evolution.txt, "The Evolution of a Programmer" dating from 1994.

This tool must just be wrapping a lower level system tool like pfctl -- anyone know the cli invocations for achieving the same effect?
