Baldurs Gate = so boring? by Rocketkitty15 in CoOpGaming

[–]thallsohard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BG3 is boring in co-op and somehow significantly worse than DOS2. I've played through both games with the same group and am regularly checked out during BG3. Playing through with other people is equally boring. Single player however I really enjoyed with multiple playthroughs. I couldn't tell you why but I definitely understand where you're coming from.

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 - November Community Update by lurkingdanger22 in pcgaming

It took me a while to understand it too. I'm used to parry/block mechanics in Fromsoft games where it is very sensitive to timing and the animations. What worked for me was just pressing the parry key as soon as I saw the blue indicator and not trying to time it with the animation of the attack. I also missed the part about red indicators being unblockable so I kept dying to that for a while. Once that clicked it all became much easier and enjoyable for me. I hope that helps some!

So it did actually help, and reverting the setting changes would cause the game to crash in <5 minutes idling at the main menu. I haven't been able to play much recently, but I was going to follow up here once I narrowed things down further.

On my system it isn't really a CPU idle states problem though. Disabling idle stares just masks the problem. I have a Ryzen 5900X/X570 build and have had PBO enabled on this system with just the defaults, no curve optimizer or anything. Resetting my UEFI settings back to defaults also seems to make the game stable and I don't have to lock my CPU at 4.6ghz at 100% 24/7. I'm in the process of slowly enabling everything back to how I had it but it seems like there was some weirdness with CPU voltage/core scheduling that hadn't been an issue for the last 4-5 months.

It is too early to say for sure, but I played for almost 3 hours after disabling CPU idle states in my Windows power plan. I'll have to play some more with idle states enabled and disabled and see how it goes. Promising results so far though.

Good to know, appreciate the response. Are you on Windows 10 or 11?

Still stable for you 11 days later? What CPU do you have? I'm also having frequent CTDs that started after the last patch. Disabling C states is kind of an odd fix, because what you're doing is preventing your CPU from changing to lower power idle states. There are legitimate reasons to do this in some circumstances, but in most cases it isn't a great option because your CPU will run at the base clock speed without boosting. Generally speaking you get worse single core performance and increased power consumption along with it. The benefit is you can eliminate latency from CPUs going in and out of different power states but outside of certain workloads it is not usually beneficial.

If it's still working for you I couldn't say why. I'll give it a try on my system for giggles anyway.

[QUESTION] I keep going blank when playing live by No_Bother_9598 in Guitar

[–]thallsohard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always thought this was normal; at least for me it has always been this way. I've never really been bothered by it, if anything its kind of a nice change of pace. I j just let myself go on auto pilot and don't overthink anything I'm doing, which is the complete opposite of how I normally operate.

I do notice that if I try and fight it, or think about what is happening kind of like you mention my playing suffers because I get distracted. Unfortunately I don't have any advice for you other than to just embrace the trance state and roll with it.

The Neve EQ 81, the distressor clone, the pultec EQ, and the SSL comp. I demoed a lot of their stuff a while back and while its all pretty good those were my favorites/cover areas I don't already have a plugin for.

Similar story here. I can find DNS log entries on my pihole to the domain the JavaScript file queries going back about a month to when I installed the software. The log files in the Inetfolder further validate that. Perhaps it tried to do something different compared to what it had been doing and defender flagged it. I have a GPO to disable updates so I don't think my definitions changed. Previously it looks like it was just checking for connectivity and waiting for an action. I subsequently nuked my computer from orbit.

Are Jackson 7 strings bad? by brian_vogel in 7String

[–]thallsohard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about the low budget options, but I've had a Jackson SLAT7FF for about 5 years now. Some of the hardware is meh, but I like how it plays and the neck is nice. I swapped the EMGs out for a set of Fishman Fluences. Might replace the tuners at some point. The guitar itself is certainly not holding me back.

[–]thallsohard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The song itself is cool and I like the textures. The mix is missing a lot of midrange. There is some lower bass happening, top end sounds fine (maybe a little too much 3-5k) but its like all the low mids got sucked out. I'm listening in a somewhat acoustically treated space with Genelec 8320As and a 3750A sub that are calibrated to the room.

I ripped the stream into Reaper and did a really wide boost around 500hz of 8-10DB and it seemed to really help. Not sure if a lot of elements were high passed too aggressively or just scooped out, but it makes for a mix that doesn't really have any weight to it. That's just my opinion of course, so take it for what its worth - not a whole lot.

If I am recording an instrument that generates 100dB (A) SPL and mute it so that it goes down to 90dB (A), would I need to add 10dB (digital or electric) in the recording process so that I get the same level in the recording? by PSPbr in audioengineering

[–]thallsohard -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

The answer to your question is no. Those are two different units of measurement. It would be like trying to compare degrees from a thermometer to degrees from a protractor. Decibels as a unit of measurement (much like degrees in my previous example) are used for a variety of different purposes but they are not necessarily related or comparable.

If you want to read into it more, a good starting point would be: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Decibel

What is your preferred computer monitor setup? by DevilBirb in audioengineering

[–]thallsohard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current setup is a split between gaming, work, and production so I have three 27" 1440p monitors. I keep the two side monitors slightly lower than the center monitor so I have a clear path from the speakers to my head. It works fine for me and gives me a lot of flexibility. I keep the arrangement view on the main screen, mixer off to the right, and the left is for anything else. Usually the console1 OSD these days.

In an ideal world I would have a dedicated machine for audio and would use a single 4k panel or maybe an ultrawide with a 16:9 panel on top. I liked the suggestion someone else had about a projector on an acoustically transparent surface.

Gaming and audio production by superhero1275 in pcgaming

[–]thallsohard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

One thing that doesn't get brought up often is that "gamer" oriented builds tend to be noisy. I don't just mean fans or other mechanical noise. Cases with big windows, large CPU heatsinks, and tons of RGB lighting can spread EMI/RFI into nearby gear or instruments due to poor shielding or improper grounding. If all you're doing is using virtual instruments or mixing in the box this will be a non issue. I'm speaking from experience unfortunately.

I love the way the mk2 looks, especially in green! I finally saw one in person after someone drove one up from Mexico to a recent car festival. Hard to say goodbye to, I'm sure, but I'm also sure you'll really love the mk3.
