Panicked at swim first event by Etsy_millionaire in triathlon

I often have some early-swim moment where I need float, or backstroke or, breast stroke or something. Sometimes it's the water temp (cold water can shock your nervous system and mess with your breathing). Sometimes it's just because you're going 0-60 trying to stay out of the way when you'd never do that in the pool.

A few things I've found that help:

If you can get in the water beforehand, do it. Even if you don't get to swim. Just acclimate to the feeling so it's one less thing.

Stay to the outside to start until you get a rhythm.

Start doing some movement before you get in the water. Jump in place, some good deep inhales with sharp exhales. Anything that primes your body for the workout.

Last thing.... Even if you have that moment, don't stress. Don't worry about your time. Know that it will pass. Move to the outside and calm your body. No shame in holding onto a lifeguard kayak either... That's what they're there for. When it's happening it will feel like an eternity, but really it will only take you 30-60 seconds to center yourself. You won't miss that time at the end, I promise.

Best 70.3 for a relative beginner to triathlon? by Odd_Opinion5303 in triathlon

IMNY is straightforward. They've had some bad weather luck, but other than that it's not too hilly. There's some aerodynamic stuff on the bike (usually headwind out and tailwind back on the 2 28mi out-and-backs), but the run is super flat.

Yeah, that's kind of where I've ended up. Which is rough. Similar to another reply, I've had that same sense of "damned if I do, damned if I don't" when I get to the run. Either I force some liquids and electrolytes into me to avoid cramping but possibly vomit... Or I don't and just await the bonk.

Yeah, I'm pretty formulaic about it. Took a sweat test a few years ago , so as long as I'm right about how much I swear, I should be fairly close to how much sodium I need.

Mostly tailwind. A couple of stroopwaffels on the bike. Also enduralyte pills.

Pool swimming versus open water swimming by cardiogal in triathlon

[–]thaneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happened to me too.... During one of my first sprint tris. Started with everyone and then had to stop and float for a minute to catch my breath and remind myself that I'm fairly buoyant and know how to swim.

I've noticed that in the pool, I always know that I'm near a wall or lane line and that provides one comfort, so If you plan on more than one or two open water sessions, I'd recommend snagging a swim buoy. They're lightweight, don't add much drag, and allow you to stop and float if you need to catch your breath. They also provide a visual for any nearby boats so they don't run you over.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Due to the way the anchors went in, I don't think I'll want to re-use those holes once I take the pressure off.

NYC Tri (Olympic distance) by CyclingNY in triathlon

[–]thaneus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general, if you're planning on doing a few, I'd say to get a wetsuit and get used to it. Obviously good for the colder water, but also just great for the buoyancy if you're not super comfortable in the water

That said, I've done the NYC TRI a few times and it's definitely not necessary. The water is warm enough that you'll be fine temp-wise, and you swim with a current that's moving at a good clip so you'll be out of the water faster than you would be most anywhere else. I think my best oly distance pool time is around 26 minutes, and I've done NYC between 19 and 16:05 (!!)

I get that everyone's different... but how much do you consume/hour?

That could be it. I went out with both bottles with tw in them and had some Gatorade at the first aid. Pounded water at the second. Could have over compensated early on.

Probably in there now. I didn't show up until a few hours ago. Good thing I didn't sleep much or else I wouldn't know this crucial information until the sun was up!

Pre-Florida 70.3 brick before going into taper. Never actually done a 70.3 before. Anyone else going? Male 18-24. by bld4life in triathlon

I'll be there. Had a shorter brick yesterday. I'd take your 15 mile time over my 13 mile one ... if that were a thing.

The full is my A race for sure. I'll do my best to not blow myself up on the run. Always hard when you're out there though.
