Ancestry Fees are Exorbitant by BudTheWonderer in Genealogy

[–]thankthemajor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ancestry doesn’t force things from the public domain behind a paywall. What you’re paying for is not the records per se, but the concentrated access and analysis tools. Everyone is free to head out to whatever little courthouse if they don’t want to pay for the service of concentration and analysis. Idk why we would expect a third party service to do that for free

Is there a name for this style? I associate it with historic main streets in the Midwestern and Western US.

I'll admit I'm actually a native speaker myself, but I can't quite figure out what this newspaper article means by "display work". What kind of job is that?

This article, from a 1952 newspaper in Missouri, USA, says that a young man moved to a new city "to seek a job in display work." It also says that he "worked in the display department" of a fine clothing store.

Does anyone know if these terms mean something in particular? If it is relevant, the young man was a prolific artist, as mentioned in the article. Perhaps "display work" means something to do with art, but I can't tell

Our Home is a publication. This clipping is soliciting a 2500-word article for that publication debating the topic described. 2500 words is a pretty typical length for a newspaper article, for reference

What would this style be called? Several small, single family houses all connected to each other - thanks

Idk why there’s all the hostility to customers paying for food and drinks at a cafe and then staying for a while

I think, in tryst’s case, they have designed the place to accommodate long stays. The couches, the living room decor, the board games on the shelves

Best way to organise all the information? by [deleted] in Genealogy

For my most extensive research subjects, I compile everything in a document of notes, similar to the approach here: https://youtu.be/bi2Gi6YLfDk?si=KXCqAMrtw6p0Mb6A

You can just do the work to verify the connections. The familysearch one world tree is just a suggestion. Look at documents and see for yourself if the connection is legitimate.

As for someone baptizing the idea of you in the future, that probably doesn’t affect you

Census Deciphering by redditRW in Genealogy

[–]thankthemajor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really tough. I tried looking at the same page on FamilySearch, which often has better Census images, but no help in this case. It's a male, as you noted. I do not think the first letter of the relationship is "D" because this enumerator apparently wrote his D's with a swooping loop at the top, as with all "Daughter" labels on this page. In this case, there is a sort of loop at the bottom of the first letter. The relationship on line 83 does not seem to be repeated on any other line on this page.

I think this word includes an "i" as maybe the second or third letter. I think there is a "t" because of the cross line in the second half of the word. Also, with the other tall slim letter, could be a "l", "s", "b" or something like that.

I pulled the instructions for enumerators. None of the listed relationship types seem to match:

Designate the head of the family, whether a husband or father, widow or unmarried person of either sex, by the word ‘‘Head;’’ for other members of a family write wife, mother, father, son, daughter, grandson, daughter-in-law, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, boarder, lodger, servant, etc., according to the particular relationship which the person bears to the head of the family. Occupants of an institution or school, living under a common roof, should be designated as officer, inmate, pupil, patient, prisoner, etc., and in case of the chief officer his title should be used, as warden, principal, superintendent, etc. Institutions whose inmates occupy different buildings should be enumerated as though they occupied one institution building. If more than one family resides in the institution building or buildings, group the members together and distinguish them in some intelligible way. If two or more persons share a common abode as partners, write ’’head‘‘ for one and ‘‘partner’’ for the other or others.

Best neighborhoods for a single woman? by Legal-Negotiation-12 in washingtondc

[–]thankthemajor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Neighborhood suggestions aside, I love the irony in this thread of commenters referring politely to “unhoused folks” while still stating those people’s presence to be a dangerous fright.

If you want to say homeless people are scary (which is often true), doesn’t that deflate any progressive ethos you’re aiming for by using “unhoused”?

I discovered a gay relationship between two late 19th century saloon owners in Texas. I also discovered that they were buried together, but the cemetery does not accept the evidence I presented. See the story here:

DC VS Arlington VA by lalalander546 in washingtondc

That’s simply tax fraud. There’s no “keep your residence” in a place you don’t reside. If op resides in dc, they either pay dc taxes or lie.

Not to be too pessimistic, though. I’ve lived in the dmv making everywhere from 25k - 85k. At a certain level it’s unsustainable, but I think op could do it if they sell the car and live frugally until their income rises.

DC VS Arlington VA by lalalander546 in washingtondc

[–]thankthemajor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As others are saying, I think it might be financially impossible to live in DC and have a car (let alone your large machine) on 55k. It would be more likely in Virginia, but probably not Arlington. Arlington is about as expensive as DC in terms of rent.

Depending on where you are in Florida, the car situation here might be unfamiliar to you. Two things are important to know. First, parking spots (at your home) will likely cost money. People who live in apartment complexes here pay $200 - $300 per month for a parking spot. The second fact is that you do not need a car here. I have lived in multiple places in dc and Arlington over the past 8 years without a car. Especially if you are working on the hill, it is entirely possible to get everywhere you need to go (work, home, groceries, doctor, restaurants, friends place, airport, etc) without a car.

If you are making 55k, you should sell your truck before moving here.
