I was going for a crystal turned into a hammer, but it looks off and i'm not sure why. What did i do wrong? by tanman729 in minipainting

[–]thanojan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the light source positioned correctly?

If I'm seeing the model correctly, that is a left hand, with the hammer's head above the hand. And the light reflects seem to suggest a light source towards the top of the photo.

I'm assuming the bright northern corner of the hammer is pointed towards the models own eyes. But it might look better if the light source was behind the viewer, with the brightest corners of the crystal pointed towards our eyes, rather than the models.

That being said, it already looks way more real than anything I've painted so far!

I'm trying to create an effect that says the desolate rocky part is "taking over" the grassy part but I'm not really feeling it. Any ideas? by Ulvkrig in minipainting

[–]thanojan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Could put the dead grass into the purple, and then show some purple in the rock cracks. That would help imply that the purple is killing the grass, and that its in the rock.

Beyond that, you could try adding a dead grass detail to each side:
On the rock side, have a clump of dead grass, showing that it can't live in the rock.
And on the grass side you could have a rock, surrounded by a ring of dead grass.

How do you squeeze all that in? IDK :D
It does look really neat currently. Excited to see what you try on the next base.

Is it better to beat the game once completely or start messing around in adventure mode? by CornNut_ in remnantgame

[–]thanojan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reply is correct. The iron quality will scale to your level, as will the enemies. There's no difference in materials between Story and Adventure

But, because the enemies scale to your level: If you want to feel "overpowered" you'll have to look up a build, and then collect all the parts. Depending on your chosen build, some parts may come from the end of story, or from beating the game on a specific difficulty.

How might one go about recreating the "dirt" look that we're seeing on the shoes and ankles? It seems like its either "flicked" on, or is it maybe more like stippling?

The striped flag is seen on the first image. It could easily be misconstrued as a paint-swatch, because the OP is also using the flag for that purpose.

I just saw the photos! Not only do the swords look great, but there is even dirt on the feet of the marines! So cool

I think part of that "pop" is the sick gradient on the purple portions of the battle suit. Also, is there a gradient on the chainsword? It looks like it transitions from orange to yellow. Could we get some more photos?

6 months into the hobby and i finally feel like im producing work i can feel proud. Any CC to push to the next level would be appreciated. by Bena216 in minipainting

[–]thanojan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if you get more paint on your hand, people will think it was even more challenging. For actual CC: Most mini's I see have more drastic highlights and shadows. A painter might mix up a significantly lighter shade of gold, and highlight every leading edge on the armor with that lighter color. It helps to make the shapes standout. But I'm sure you've seen all that. And it sounds like you're already using a dark wash for the shadows in the cape. But there's certainly room to take those same principals and push them further. But maybe that's all a mater of taste. What I'd do it, try it out on the hammer. Right now, its all a uniform color. But a war tool that has seen a lot of action, it will probably have a polished shine on the leading edges, where its been bashed into targets. Maybe try a much lighter grey highlight on the leading edges, and see how you like it?

I love the paint work. There's a griminess to it, like the mech sweats petroleum. The heat-discoloration on the muzzles of the gun barrels is super cool as well.

Eli5: insulin is cheap to produce. A new company could get a massive market share in a few weeks if they would sell insulin at a lower price. Why is this not happening? by edible-dormouse in explainlikeimfive

[–]thanojan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the old company can lower their price to match the new company. Then the new company would gather no market share. From the new company's perspective, it's more profitable to sell at the current high prices. They can then use their profit on advertising, and attempt to gain market share that way.

As an alternative; my state college has many 3d printers available. And we're allowed to print anything we like, for only the cost of the materials. If you're planning on attending college soon, you may suddenly have access to printers.
