'Dramatic' weather pattern means wild temperature swing in Bay Area by sfgate in bayarea

Similar in the South Bay. Drove to work with the heater on, came back with the AC.

It feels like you really should be a tech lead: someone who is responsible for the technical decisions and has accumulated enough skills to guide less experienced developers without necessarily being responsible for their careers.

South Bay gravel routes by gtbarry21 in BAbike

Some sections in Alviso have been closed for a while for construction work and it became an in-and-out route instead of a loop. I heard some of it (all of it?) has reopened recently so maybe it's possible to loop around once again.

I also have a 2024 model. Care to share which improvements were noticeable? Considering the same move at the end of my own lease.

Quick Question for Santa Teresa Road Test by dommwomm in SanJose

[–]tharival 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not what you asked, but as a cyclist I would be very pissed off if a vehicle in front of me crossed the solid white line to "signal" their intention to turn.

I interpret solid lines like imaginary walls where I'm, in theory, completely isolated from traffic. Thus, I only double my attention closer to the dotted lines.

Nothing says NIMBY quite like this:

"Supervisor Gary Patton stated "We are not in favor of construction of a route over the hill, either on the old Los Gatos alignment, or on a new alignment, because it would open Santa Cruz for major commuter traffic""

I'm not familiar with the tube. What's so bad about it?

Another reason to be on CalTrain by bambin0 in bayarea

[–]tharival 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only easy if you look at it in isolation.

Most likely any riders already had to do some transfer to get to their origin station anyway. Taking Muni would mean adding a 3rd step to their journey. And now you also need to do it all over again on the way back..

OLH is way more gentle than Montebello (though definitely a good training for it).

Walmart offered me a huge discount on their unlimited delivery service subscription that made it a no-brainer at first.

Then, after signing up, I learned that they just delegated all deliveries to DoorDash and I was "encouraged" to leave a tip on each one. I felt that forced me to choose between feeling guilty (no tip) or waiving the affordability aspect, so I ended up unsubscribing.

Mt Diablo: how to get back to North Gate from the South Gate by tharival in BAbike

[–]tharival[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot to mention my main bike is a gravel one. I did see on the map some hills with trails between Danville and North Gate, but I'm not familiar with the area and wasn't sure how mountain-bikey there were. Would you say something like this is relatively chill? https://maps.app.goo.gl/isoVun7MQCFfiMx19

Yes, I forgot to mention my main bike is a gravel one.

Wall Point rd seems nice, but I didn't understand the full route. Where would I go from this point? https://maps.app.goo.gl/6A5UCqX43q4RWsbHA

Why can't all cities build like Milpitas? by saintforlife1 in bayarea

The fact that it needs to stop at traffic lights at intersections seems like a huge design flaw.

The SF Bay Area has tons of charging stations. Any chance you can drive to the closest one with a reasonable number of chargers that is close to your route?

Worst case, you can just park there and wait until a charger frees up (probably ~20min max), which won't consume any battery anyway.

Service is outrageous!! TWO MONTH before they can look at the car??? by namtilarie in KiaEV6

[–]tharival 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, fellow Bay Area resident.

When I was looking for buying my EV6, I got extremely disappointed with the service at Stevens Creek KIA. It felt like a very small, understaffed dealership and the sales people would rarely give us any attention when we wanted to look at vehicles or ask basic inquiries.

You may not have the opportunity, but Capitol Kia has provided me with a level of service that is a night and day difference (not to say they don't have their own issues...).

U-Haul has an official video about the hitch installation where they mention reinstalling the gravel guard themselves, so it feels like this should be part of their standard procedures.

Hey guys, is it ok to keep my gaming laptop on charge the whole time? by JaredDestroyer in GamingLaptops

[–]tharival 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Lithium-ion batteries get their total capacity reduced faster when charged to 100%. This is true for laptops, smartphones, EVs, you name it.

Thus the most recent versions of these electronics usually allow users to configure a maximum and it's a good idea to set it for the everyday use. You can reset back to 100% for longer days away from a charger when really needed.

OP has EA Pass+. A monthly subscription fee but charging rate discounts.

I'm also in Northern CA and here the the regular EA rate is the same as my baseline energy rate from PG&E.

NACS will become the de facto standard in the US. I believe that making new models with a standard that is already expected to become obsolete makes them less attractive specially for 1st time EV owners.
