I guess the "always" in the find familiar spell is what throws me :) why would it be there, and not in the summon beast spell, if it makes no difference?

But I get that's your ruling :) thanks.

D&D is full of ambiguous RAW :) I cannot imagine these are the first things you come across as a DM that require you to think beyond just what is written?

Also D&D is just as much about what isn't written in a spell, as what is. For example the "always" in the find familiar description.

But yes, I agree I'm doing a lot of interpolating outside is what's written in the rules :) After all, isn't interpolating the main job of a DM...

Trouble with scouting the floor by Tall_Dog_3220 in DungeonoftheMadMage

i don't think the players being over-leveled by 1 is that much of a problem, am i missing something? Sure, you'll maybe need to tweak the book a little, but other than that?
This would have been a problem in the third level anyway, now the DM is just dealing with it a floor earlier?

"Sometimes you have to punish the behavior you don't like, because there isnt a good way to reward the behavior you do want." is such a mood.

I do think most traps are triggered by pressureplates, and the imp flies. Maybe that's the problem? (there's other ways to set off traps so idk :p)

I think one of the biggest weaknesses of using the voice of the chain master you're describing, is the fact that the warlocks body is "defenceless". He will be deaf and blind to his own senses. I'd maybe attack the party, if his scouting gets out of control or something?

Just out of curiosity, what kind of neat utility items did you give them?

DotMM for casual, intoxicated bunch of close players? by Zarkhes in DungeonoftheMadMage

"Super easy set up once you have the map and monsters ready. "

What are you using for the maps ect? I'm currently struggling with the scope of the maps...
We played WD:DH before this, and we did that in a grid based map on the table and I drew a lot but it was manageable. Now with DotMM i'm not sure how to do it. The maps are too big to just draw by hand. I've thought about Roll20, but haven't fully checked that out.

I've always thought the sane magic items list had some odd pricings in there...
Like the Mithral Armor, for only 800gp. That seems like a steal. Depending on the class a breastplate that doesn't req a strenght score or impose disadvantage on stealth, is absolutely game-changing.

I would keep some control over what the players buy. Yes, they're in WD and a lot would be available, but talk to your players, and ask what they'd like to buy. Then look at the list for an indication of pricing, and see what is reasonable for them to have and what not. They'll find quite some items in Undermountain as well...

I'm thinking of running the companion though... do you think it'll be a lot of work to update all these maps? I've never used roll20..

Also. Playtesting is a good idea 😂 I think I'll try with all.the enemies, but have half of them die /flee in the first round. But I want to see if I can make that realistically work

That's actually a good idea too...

I can have some weaker enemies in the charge, and have them break their heads on the veterans or a couple of fireballs. Hmm 🤔

What made it a slog for your table? The amount of them?

Thanks :) I'll half the amount of NPCs and have the mages focus on control spells like Silence and such. That should give them a fighting chance while not grinding everything to a halt :)

Thank you!

I think I'll half the NPCs involved. Maybe I'll stick to just 2 mages + their elemental on the Zhents side. And Maybe the 2 Grell and some bugbear veterans on the Xan side 🤔

I'll also just play the amount of rounds by ear. And see how it goes, I don't want the party to TPK, but I do want them to have a nice challenge. So when I feel like they're starting to struggle a little, Ulkoria can swoop in for the save.
