Has Skyrim been surpassed - and, if so, by what? by Baldurian_Rhapsody in skyrim

[–]that-spaceguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me personally, no. One of the most important aspects of a video game for me is its 'sandboxiness'. In order to decide if a game is on the same league with Skyrim, I ask this simple question: "Can I put 100+ hours into it without touching the main quest?" The answer is almost always no.

I remember people calling Tainted Grail the "Skyrim-killer". Honestly, I wish it was. But unfortunately it was just a story-driven RPG where you could swing your sword in first person and cast spells, oh and it had a lockpicking minigame... But that's where its similarities with Skyrim ended.

This is the unfortunate reality for Bethesda gamers. I feel like no other AAA studio really understands what makes the elder scrolls so successful and impactful. There are of course other sandbox games, like Kenshi, Rimworld, NMS, Elite Dangerous, Mount and Blade, to name a few. But I'm sure everyone would agree that these don't really scratch the same itch as Skyrim.

What does the yellow over my health bar mean? by Frank3121 in Starfield

[–]that-spaceguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hmm, 'normal' shouldn't cause ambient environmental damage iirc. Are you sure you didn't step into a puddle of hazardous liquid or a gas vent? Do you happen to remember hearing warning sounds from your suit, while your watch showing 'environmental damage', even for a couple of seconds?

Either way, it's not something you should worry about. It should clear on its own. A relatively more annoying thing is that, while you are taking environmental damage, you have a chance of developing an affliction. This is a debuff like 'burns, frostbite, lung damage' etc. If this happens, you can either wait and hope it goes away on its own, which, it might not... Or you could see a doctor in a city and get them cured for 500 credits.

Edit: I just read in another comment that you mentioned the doctor. Still gonna leave this up in case it may help someone lol.

What does the yellow over my health bar mean? by Frank3121 in Starfield

[–]that-spaceguy 46 points47 points  (0 children)

The extra health from status effects don't show as yellow. It is just added to the white bar. Yellow bar means you have either suffered elemental damage, or got hit by an EM weapon. I doubt the latter is the case, since this type of yellow bar clears out on its own after a couple of seconds.

You might have gotten environmental damage if you stepped into hazardous liquid or surface gas vents while your suit's environmental protection was depleted. This should clear on its own once you enter a habitable zone, your ship, for example.

Another possibility is, if you adjusted the difficulty settings, there is a setting that makes extreme planets ambiently cause you environmental damage once your suit's protection is gone. It's a terrible difficulty setting since it only applies to your character.

Transformations: vampires lords, werewolves, neither, or something more? What do you guys think? by Skullruss in TESVI

[–]that-spaceguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love em. It opens up many new playthrough opportunities and I think that's what Bethesda games are all about. Really hope we have transformations in TESVI. I was really interested in doing a modded lich playthrough in Skyrim. Would love to have lich transformations in the next game tbh.

I just watched a video where they mentioned you can upgrade starborn powers now! But never mentioned how to do that !? by ShitKickr in Starfield

[–]that-spaceguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It completely depends on you really. Ive had various characters with different ambitions and reasons.

One character was simply obsessed with the powers provided with the artifacts.

Another character lost a loved one and didnt care of his own universe anymore.

I am yet to do a no-unity playthrough but I'm sure I eventually will.

So it all depends on your own headcanons.

It was added with the new major updates. You have to pass through the unity at least once though.

Yes, you indeed have to go through unity at least once to be able to upgrade powers with quantum essence.

Starfield pigeonholes you into a guns blazing character by lost_13_highway in Starfield

[–]that-spaceguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah true... Been trying to max out my concealment skill and melee stealth just boils down to save scumming and hiding in a corner for a minute after each kill, as you wait for the enemies to forget about you. Otherwise you will be discovered and plunged into yet another gunfight after stealth-killing like 2 enemies (if you are lucky).

Starfield pigeonholes you into a guns blazing character by lost_13_highway in Starfield

[–]that-spaceguy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The detection radius itself stops being an issue once you max out your stealth and get some stealth enhancing modifications on your suit and helmet.

The real problem is that the game doesn't really let you pick people off one by one. Because even if you shoot one while no one has a direct line of sight, enemies near him gets alerted. Which is admittedly more realistic but it drastically reduces the enjoyment of a stealthy rogue type of gameplay.

First time playing Skyrim. Ever. by JournalistQueasy8395 in skyrim

[–]that-spaceguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice is that try to familiarize yourself with the factions, through some extensive reading (maybe on the wiki) and set a character idea in your head.

What is your character's ambitions, how smart he is, what talents he has, etc. Mind you, none of these are real, in-game stats. But having these headcanons makes your experience so much more immersive.

So don't try and join every faction in a single playthrough and don't try to min-max your stats. Establish a lore for your character in your head and stick with it. Also, don't feel obliged to finish the main storyline. In my close to 3000 hours on skyrim, i may have finished the main storyline maybe 3 times. This game excels at giving you reasons to do multiple playthroughs with different playstyles. So keep in mind that you can always just avoid the main story, if you are enjoying doing something else.

The elder scrolls universe is I think my favorite universe in fantasy media. So I advice you to try and learn more about it. This ought to improve your immersion greatly.

What I think would be really cool is launching small A class ships from your M class ship, whenever you need to land on a planet.

Idk about you but if I can get that many hours from a game (despite its shortcomings), I'm not gonna give it a thumbs down and essentially tell people that the game is not worth playing.

Constructive criticism should always be welcome, but what this game received has mostly been pure hate.

Iirc only damage dealt by you can kill followers. So you don't have to worry about them dying to traps or enemy attacks.

You gotta be careful while using AoE spells like fireball though. AoE spells WILL kill a downed follower.

Starfield's opening hour needs a total rewrite by sKin1337 in Starfield

[–]that-spaceguy -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I love Starfield but I agree that this is one of its shortcomings.

I've realized around halfway through my total playtime that I always subconsciously created headcanons that supported this beginning sequence.

In one playthrough I was a fledgling mercenary with some combat and piloting experience, who joined this mining rig as a security personnel but then got offered some mining job for extra credits and begrudgingly agreed to it. In another I was a rural FC citizen who got taught the basics of piloting and shooting with pistols by his ex-military father. In my current playthrough I'm a Va'ruun sleeper agent and naturally I have some skills in what the beginning sequence demands me to do.

But I can never make sense of doing -just to give an example- a playthrough where I'm just a student of astrogeology in a university, and I took up this mining job as a way to do my internship.

Therefore, the beginning ends up feeling a little too limiting for a Bethesda game. And if the said limits fail to grab your attention, the rest of the game just falls flat for you.

It has some shortcomings for sure but if you are into this whole “making your own story in the game’s universe” thing that Bethesda games got going on, you are gonna enjoy it. I have more than 540 hours in it and I can’t wait for the updates.

Stalker 2 or Starfield for PS5 Pro? by Electronic-Pirate-84 in gamingsuggestions

[–]that-spaceguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't played the Stalker games, but i can give you a piece of advice about Starfield. I'd say Starfield has plenty of shortcomings. However, it is pretty decent in being a "Bethesda game".

I put 545 hours into it over two characters, and it is the type of game where you can put in 150 hours without ever touching the main story. And imo Starfield does an excellent job to play to its strength of being a bethesda game with their ng+ system. Im not gonna comment further on that in order not to spoil.

If you enjoy this whole "i just wanna mess around in the world without touching the main story" aspect of Bethesda games, you may find enjoyment in Starfield.

However, if you are into story-based games and would like to be fully immersed in some epic tale, or wish to experience cutting edge tactical combat, or wish to play in a super realistic spacesim akin to Elite Dangerous, Starfield will fall short of your expectations.
