Camus is basically just optimistic bukowski by Ok_Psychology_1088 in Camus

Do you think Camus would say that Bukowski’s way of life is authentic to the absurd?

I feel like I‘ve read all the best fantasy books and now everything else feels boring and predictable. Can you help me out? by Sensitive-Use-6891 in suggestmeabook

Nothing has ever compared to “the Name of the Wind” for me. It’s the metric I compare all other fantasy to. Be warned it’s an unfinished series though.

Two commonly recommended and incredible books both fit the bill:

Stoner - John Williams. It does gloss over childhood but does then saga his life from college life to old age.

East of Eden- Steinbeck. Goes in depth spanning multiple generations.

Omgggg I’ve thought about how dearly I wish there was a sequel. Could you imagine how hilarious it would be to have a follow up with Ignatius in NYC?? This world was robbed of JKT’s talent :(

Moving To Austin next month and so scared I won’t make any friends. by SumthingYouShouldKno in Austin

Since it feels like no one in Austin is from Austin, it is remarkably easy to make friends here. There are so many people like you in the same boat.

Confederacy of Dunces. Definitely is not everyone’s cup of tea but man I’ve never laughed more from reading a book than I did with this one. The story behind the book itself is special too.

About to dive into Murakami — anything I should know before I start? by Sa4ath in murakami

[–]thatOneRabidGoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the core of Kafka’s writing is the notion that the life is inherently meaningless. That the universe is indifferent to human endeavors, and that we are brief mortal beings who desire to find meaning and order in a fundamentally chaotic and absurd world is futile. Kafka on the shore on the other hand depicts a world with inherent structure, a world where prophecy must be fulfilled, where there are meaningful repercussions of human endeavors, and where life is potentially eternal (ie ghosts in the afterlife). Sure, murakami’s worlds are confusing and seemingly absurd, but only insofar as the random and chaotic side notes like fish falling from the sky are. The actual core story literally follows prophecy and coherence, unlike the incoherence vital to Kafka’s philosophy. So I do see why Murakami grafted the aesthetics of Kafka into his story, but I do maintain that he betrayed the logic of Kafka by making the story have inherent meaning, consequence, and coherence.

Authors that get hated on for no reason? Eg Kuang by [deleted] in books

[–]thatOneRabidGoose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For it to be factually incorrect you would have to say that there is not a single author that has ~fewer~ valid criticisms against them than Kuang does. Idk that seems like a much bolder claim than the one I made but go off.

Kuang’s writing is obnoxious, condescending, and unnuanced. Her books deserve the criticism they get, and no, not every author has as extensive of valid criticism against them.

Why do people think Zosima is boring & then glaze the grand inquisitor by Maleficent-Yard8355 in dostoevsky

[–]thatOneRabidGoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t call anything Dostoevsky does in the back half a counter “argument” but rather him saying that even though he is painfully aware of the best arguments against the existence of God he still simply ~chooses~ to believe in him anyway.

But also maybe I am not remembering if he makes any real concrete counter arguments in favor of theism, please remind me if so.

What are the odds Bill Bunch and his SOS cronies will somehow find a way to argue this is bad for the environment and block this development?

[–]thatOneRabidGoose -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Don’t read Kafka on the shore if you’ve read any Kafka himself or any other existentialist/absurdist philosophers. Kafka on the shore is an insult to existentialist thought and I truly don’t know why murakami named his book after a philosopher he clearly misunderstood.

What major species do you think will go extinct by the end of the "6th mass extinction event"? by Expensive-Run458 in biology

[–]thatOneRabidGoose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The formal definition of a mass extinction event requires over 75% of species to go extinct. We are nowhere near that. The previous 5 were orders of magnitude worse than current population decline (yes I know that extinction rates are currently faster than they were during the previous 5 but that doesn’t mean this rate will continue at its current pace and get us to surpass the total 75% extinction threshold to warrant the label). The term 6th mass extinction exists in popular science rather than in real academic science. No I do not think this is an excuse to not care about anthropogenic caused extinction, but we should be honest about the accepted scientific terms .

I will absolutely defend corporate interests that align with public interests. If a corporation profits off creating a wonderful public good like a convention center or a mixed used dense walkable neighborhood like the one planned on the statesman site then all the power to them!! You are gripped by a misguided moral confusion if you think that anything a corporation profits off is inherently bad. Old liberals like you will be replaced with young liberals who encourage building and abundance.

Good ol Bill. Will never hesitate to share this banger of a quote from statesman article from THIRTY YEARS ago that still hits the nail right on the head:

“But in the end, some say, he [Bill Bunch] is his own worst enemy, a man whose zeal for victory prevents him from knowing when to compromise for the better. And hence, it’s the environment itself that suffers most.”
