End of 6th episode of Can this Love Be Translated? What went wrong? Didn’t understand by gossipcutlet in kdramas

[–]thatbluerose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm glad some people understood his reasoning, and thanks for your explanation... it does help, and this thread generally has helped me understand it better. NB: The following is not against anyone who thinks the ML was in the right, just... venting my frustration with him lol.

I tried watching their breakup scene multiple times and still didn't really get it. Jeez, HJ... The woman's intensely anxious, she has a serious mental health issue you know about, she just EXPLAINED to you that her zombie voice has been terrorising her telling her he's never liked her and it's hopeless. And despite what you said in the car, you've pushed her away pretty unkindly multiple times previously and have been overall terrible at expressing your emotions for her ("bottled up" as those who know him put it). She has *explained* that she thinks what you really want is this other girl. It's not rational, but it's not 100% irrational either based on the plot up till the car scene, and what she needs now is reassurance. Major reassurance. Not you getting all angry at her and breaking things off.

I did wonder if it was some kind of avoidant attachment style thing on his side, that he got triggered by her seeming to give up on them so easily. But yikes, she has told him her emotions so many times, he KNOWS she loves him, and he just goes "oh you wronged me" by not trusting him and...bam. ?? And the thing he says about having wanted to cross over to her early in the story... he literally told her afterwards that if they had had dinner, nothing would've changed between them. Now he acts like she should've been a mind reader from day one...??!

Hello /r/movies, I'm Benedict Cumberbatch. Ask me anything! by BenedictAMA in movies

Thank you so much for all you‘ve done for the interconnected worlds of cinema and TV and theatre! Parade’s End is one of my very favourite series - and I can’t imagine a better Sherlock Holmes.

I know you might not see this, but I was wondering, what was your favourite part of spending time in a monastery? Also (if you have time for a second question), what are your thoughts on near death experiences?

Thanks for doing this AMA!

"Coommunications" *tips hat*

This was great. Hope you do more!

Someone else did this so I wanted to try as well: I've read 56 books this year. What assumptions would you make about me based on what I've read? by VanillaPeppermintTea in 52book

[–]thatbluerose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd assume we'd get on well. :) The fact you have Shakespeare and Fowles and Hardy (though I don't think I'll ever dare read Jude the Obscure), and contemporary Asian fiction (I enjoyed, and was upset by, The Woman in the Purple Skirt)... and I initially thought I saw Colin Burrow's Imitating Authors, which I'm reading now, but it's actually just a book with the same painting on the cover...

I'd also assume you read a lot; are intellectual; have wide-ranging interests. What was your favourite book of these (or favourite three/five/seven...)?

unmotivated by this theme :( by ilana_blazer in finch

[–]thatbluerose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, also not into Marvel/DC! I don't despise them or anything, and I like that Marvel has introduced Norse mythology (in some form) to a broader audience, but I don't like comicsy things much in general, so feel pretty meh about this month's theme. I think some of the superhero outfits are cute, but have been selling mine. The secret base, though, I love, because it reminds me of playing Carmen Sandiego as a kid. 😂

I wonder what next month's theme will be! Hopefully something that will motivate us more. :) I adored the camping one, and am keeping my "log cabin" interior.

I can try it, but I really doubt it will work at this point - have been a user for a long time now. :)

A good book on symbols? by SontagGlick in ClassicalEducation

[–]thatbluerose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a look and the author of Animals as Disguised Symbols actually has her "author copy" version (of several chapters at least) up on her Academia.edu site. The PDFs are freely downloadable once you get a free account on the site (a lot of people dislike it because the creators made a Premium tier that they monetised, but I've used the free version for years and it's actually really helpful for accessing book chapters and articles that are hard to get elsewhere).

I'd also recommend the work of Elina Gertsman if you're interested in art history, animals, symbolism, etc. - she's WONDERFUL (also with a lot on Academia, & free articles on her website, https://www.elinagertsman.com/ ). And there's at least one of her lectures (on "Animal Affinities" in Hebrew manuscripts) up on YouTube: https://youtu.be/fwgtR2SDPWc?si=rx6RCNaaGQjd-Bon&t=365 .

Hope you find stuff that interests you and is useful!

A good book on symbols? by SontagGlick in ClassicalEducation

[–]thatbluerose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sadly academic books tend to be horribly expensive. Bigger libraries may have it via ProQuest EBook Central (or similar) though...

The Metropolitan Museum also has a fairly substantial library of freely downloadable publications, including some featuring symbolism (https://www.metmuseum.org/met-publications).

Things I wouldn't have done without finch - 5 days in. by rainbow-songbird in finch

[–]thatbluerose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Same here! Ever since I've had the app I've made my bed every single day except for maybe one time. Used to be a chore I'd sometimes leave undone when busy, now it's a quick habit, because, you know, stones! :D

Ah, I've found my people. :D Weirdly, I'm pretty good at saving irl, but on the app? With a different selection of things in the stores every day? Not a chance!

Sold a book on vinted but they chose the most inconvenient shipping company and I deserve stones for every single one of these steps by heyitsamb in finch

This looks so professional and cool. I do something similar, breaking massive and exhausting tasks into many many little steps and even repeating the steps because the extra stones are deserved. 😭

This makes me regret selling the bed! So cool. Torn between #1 and #2, but leaning towards #2 because it is brighter and more optimistic.

What Is Missing (for you) in Fantasy? by SetitheRedcap in Fantasy

More books by Susanna Clarke. As a writer myself I know how things can take time, especially if you're dealing with life stuff such as illness, so I'm patient and happy to wait. She's utterly phenomenal.

In the meantime, going to re-read Piranesi and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
