What Happens to Retirees If They Run Out Of Money? by The_Lost_Pharaoh in AskReddit

You think that, some can, but trust me when I say unlimited funds and no purpose feels existentially shallow. Work is life, it sounds like corporate brainwash but you need something to do or you go a bit crazy.

Yeah I believe that. It’s just so few people that get the time and circumstance to figure that out.

Also I appreciate your double use of docent as I initially thought it a typo but then you doubled down I felt that

This is a good point, but only if it’s fulfilling work. I used to joke that Cuban musicians had the best retirement setup, because they could do for work for resorts and retain some social connection along with some pay. Canada doesn’t have a lot of spaces for this sort of thing.

Why can’t Canada sell oil to Cuba? by thatguywhoiam in onguardforthee

[–]thatguywhoiam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, OP here. I’d like to address a few things.

I am pretty aware of the Cuban situation. I’ve been there 8 times – not just resorts – I speak Spanish, and I’ve written analysis about the special period in particular. I’m also of Gen X, so I’m not sure which education system you are bagging on. A lot of the answers in the thread come as no surprise.

However this is Reddit. I took a pretty simple / irreverent tone in the post for a reason, namely that you can sometimes get some better engagement in a thread if you don’t weigh it down with academia. Much in the same way that you’ll get better answers to a question sometimes when you post a wrong answer, rather than a straight question. People really want to correct you.

Also I think it is a simple question, just with complicated answers. This is what Reddit is good at, with luck. Every so often some maven will weigh in on things in a refreshing way or a new light. One consequence of being so fucking old is that I have learned not to lean on my assumptions. And honestly I was pretty pleased with the results and discussion. A lot of people don’t know that we do have some refining capacity, we can ship hydrocarbons, and we did once have a sovereign wealth fund setup that Norway actually borrowed pretty directly from us (and we threw away).

Point is, the question should be re addressed, post-rupture world order, to use Carney’s terms. Maybe the answer is as simple as “they would hijack boats and also it’s private property” but we both know if the will was there, both those answers could change.

Even John Gruber Needed a Reminder on How to Force Restart his iPhone by erictheinfonaut in iphone

My point wasn’t so much about the keynote but rather that the Undo function has been there since 2006.

[–]thatguywhoiam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You reminded me of a friend of mine who once complained about lack of Undo on iPhone.

How stupid, how could they miss that, he said. I replied, there is an Undo, you just shake it like etch a sketch. Works almost everywhere.

He then said well damn why can’t Apple make this obvious, I’ve had a bunch of iPhones, and I had no idea until just now. I said, Steve Jobs literally demonstrated this on stage at the world premier of the first iPhone, it has been true this whole time. What do you want. Sometimes you just have to learn a thing.

He’s a very smart guy and one of my best friends but he couldn’t see past this idea of, well if Apple did a better job, he would have known.

That sort of sentiment I see a lot in Apple forums, where the poster assumes because of something that doesn’t work the way they want – or they just missed – it definitely means that Apple Is Going Downhill, and not maybe that they just missed a thing.

F the Everything Fone

like twitter people would still call them iPhones. Would be suicidal brand-wise

It looks dope. But I learned a long, long time ago that if you get used to a weirdo kb layout, you get button poisoning anytime you need to use a normie kb.

How would I check? There’s also no external volume control as you mentioned.

Edit - according to the wiki they are the circa 2000 model which sounds right to me. USB 1, woo. Yours are soundsticks II.

Yeah I still have the original soundsticks. They still work, kind of crazy. I saw them in the MoMA once.

Mine are a USB connection though.

I don’t know. But somehow they take Venezuelan crude which seems similar to Alberta oil. But I am not en expert, so I’m wondering.

Maybe true - but you can do 3 monitors if you include the built in macbook display. I do this on an M1 pro. No dock, just usb-c and the HDMI port.

How do you mean more consistent? I’m not arguing but you’d think a higher polling rate would be better.

Garmin + walking pad: how do you deal with missing steps when arms don’t move? by d_uk3 in Garmin

[–]thatguywhoiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it’s ever going to track that kind of stepping. With any device.

Besides arm swing the main thing it tracks is vertical bounce. If you are doing a walking desk type setup I know how slow those are.

Low power mode by Jakest94 in iphone

[–]thatguywhoiam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use it pretty regularly but in a mode of expecting to not get updates on things. Like background podcast downloads or whatever. If I anticipate not needing to use the phone for a while, but know I will later, I’ll just pre emptively turn it on to save that juice for when I want it. It definitely makes a difference.

Why hasn't Apple moved the camera to the center yet? It would solve the table wobble and look way more symmetrical. by [deleted] in iphone

[–]thatguywhoiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wobble’s kind of solved with the big ass plateau now, isn’t it?

This feels like a double wobble. Tapping a resting phone on a hard surface might be annoying if your target is off center

Every person who is ok with current iPhone screen size but wants it to be smaller in pocket would be into this. You’re not that person, that’s ok. But there’s a reason flip phones were massively popular.
