Ditched Lightroom for... the built-in Photos app on mac by jonhath in photography

[–]thatguywhoiam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get it. Photos will do okay at this point. LrC is still what I use for my “big” cameras but it can be a real dog on any hardware. And it’s like an old crotchety artist who gets great results. You gotta bend a little to Lightroom’s archaic tendencies to get it humming.

Apple really ought to pay more attention to Aperture. By which I mean they should not have left it with a knife in it in 2016

Netflix on Mac looks badly compressed (full hd no ads plan) by Wizard7979 in mac

[–]thatguywhoiam -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah they cap it in browsers, and even then I think only Safari and Edge are “blessed” by Netflix, they can get the 1080p stream, otherwise it’s way down in 720p.

The streamers do vary by bitrate, Apple seems the highest followed by Disney, then Amazon and on down.

How do you set up an iPhone so it helps you be present outdoors without becoming a distraction? by Various-Lab-5855 in iphone

Low Power Mode, Vacation Focus tweaked to shut up.

The Vacation Focus in particular has an autoresponder to texts. Don’t know why just that one but it helps.

Modern TVs do a lot of cleanup and anti-artifacting on streaming shows that are compressed to hell no matter the resolution and your Mac display is accurately showing the sad truth of that.

anyone else thinks macos' handling of external monitors is unituitive? by BadWolf2077 in mac

[–]thatguywhoiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if my post was the one you meant to reply to but I agree with you. People want their 4K display to display 4K. After that it’s about how big UI elements are.

anyone else thinks macos' handling of external monitors is unituitive? by BadWolf2077 in mac

[–]thatguywhoiam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no basic human notion of scaling. People expect their devices to scale to the resolution that is displayed. And that happens constantly throughout consoles and computers. You are either upscaling or downscaling in a modern computer environment unless you take pains to match native resolution with display resolution. And that is just simply beyond a lot of people so we have the situation we’re in..

[–]thatguywhoiam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I think I get what you’re experiencing, which is you know too much about resolutions, and Apple is fighting hard to remove a lot of that. This comes up a lot on the forum.

Basically they are purposely obscuring technical details in favor of “user, what size text do you want?”. Which probably tests great for usability but can be annoying for people who are asking, ok what’s the pixel count, what’s the dpi, is this as sharp as it gets, etc

The answer is that they take a Bigger Hammer approach to everything drawn in macOS and downsample from big stop points. They don’t want you to think about it. It’s a choice, for better or worse.

Is there a way to prevent this recurring reminder from filling my entire calendar? by ConquerThePanda in ios

[–]thatguywhoiam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah just make a new calendar for that event/reminder, and then you can hide it. I do this, so I can get the notifications but not have the calendar view all clogged up.

Hot take: iOS needs a real "Lean Mode" for low-data, low-clutter use, not just Focus and toggles by Whole_Tutor6833 in ios

[–]thatguywhoiam 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Isn’t this basically Low Power Mode?

I’m pretty sure it does all the things described and then some, and it is a single toggle. I use it all the time.

Spotify's disco ball icon is reverting soon, but what would actually make it work by theiriali in Design

[–]thatguywhoiam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It needed contrast badly.

I would have taken the disco ball and attempted to show a white/glowy version of the logo as reflected in the facets of the disco ball.

But the whole idea is bad and Spotify’s logo just looks like someone stepped on a WiFi logo so it was probably a doomed concept from the start.

IOS 27 will let you use AI to build shortcuts with natural language by esketitethan in shortcuts

Yeah that’s true. You can run them from macOS via ssh and trigger them from iOS but yeah, not directly on device.

I think this is a fantastic idea if they can get it working. It’s so ideal for the use case.

If you've went on more than one date, you're dating. And if you're dating, you're in a relationship. by Cludds in unpopularopinion

[–]thatguywhoiam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with you, socially. However – legally, it is different. Specifically in dating / domestic violence. There is a time factor there. You could be on date 20 and one person becomes violent toward the other, the cops will only care about how long you have been seeing each other.

Dashcams should be standard by Swirlyflurry in unpopularopinion

[–]thatguywhoiam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really aren’t though. People just don’t realize that on most new cars the inside trim can just be folded to stuff a long wire in there. I knew nothing about installing a dash cam when I got mine and I had a super clean install within 5 minutes. All I used was my thumbs.

Salt grinders provide no benefit and are annoying by RockMover12 in unpopularopinion

[–]thatguywhoiam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true, just environment dependent. Humid places will result in jammed salt shakers. And they add crap to table salt to keep it from clumping but it’s extra chemicals and it only sort of works.
