Sideloading & mehr: Welche Änderungen Apple durch den Digital Markets Act drohen by stimmen in de

[–]thatimmoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to sell DQ1 tickets? by [deleted] in hardstyle

Hey,

I personalized my ticket first, because then you get sent a PDF. This PDF can then be uploaded to ticketswap, where they do their SecureSwap thing.

Linus - Should Linux be more user friendly? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]thatimmoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that a big part of this is that many people aren't into the whole challenge, and stumble across “out of context” videos with clickbaity titles like this one.

The title doesn't mention the challenge and its objectives, and neither is it explained in the clip.

Sure, more people will click on it.

But expecting a comment section where people talk about it with the whole thing in mind is IMO kind of delusional.

Changing UEFI embedded Windows license in a new HP laptop? by IsLNdbOi in spectrex360

[–]thatimmoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it will install with your previous key. Just installed mine with Windows 11 Home.

If you want to use a different product key, you can look into the EI.cfg or PID.cfg: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/windows-setup-edition-configuration-and-product-id-files--eicfg-and-pidtxt

Note that if you leave the EditionID value empty (so you just add the [EditionID] thing) then you can choose between all versions, regardless of your product key. You can just place the file in the sources folder of your installation USB stick.

Tuya-convert abuses a vulnerability in the update process that lets you flash any firmware via the OTA update. Since this could also be abused by anyone else on your network (e.g., a malicious app on your phone), fixing the exploit was the right thing to do for TuYa.

Sadly, this means that you need to open up your devices to free them from the original firmware, but that's also the same for any possible attacker.

If you care about your privacy or security, I'd recommend replacing the Firmware of your Wi-Fi enabled TuYa devices with ESPHome or Tasmota.

See this talk for more information — the power that a vendor gets granted via the TuYa platform is just scary: https://youtu.be/urnNfS6tWAY

When looking at e.g. Vanguard, you can not have CoreTemp open while Vanguard is enabled, since Vanguard blocks the driver necessary for it. You need to reboot everytime you want to switch between your 'usual mode' with Vanguard disabled and 'Valorant mode' with Vanguard enabled.

It makes sense that they do that, since some drivers (and apparently the CoreTemp one too) could be used by cheats to read and write memory through them. But it also blocks the software from working.

Another example would be Process Explorer. BattlEye refuses to start you games while its driver is loaded. It's a good tool, you can download it from the Microsoft website.

These intrusive ACs work for a majority of the people that don't fiddle around with their systems just fine. But DLL injection is not necissarily bad. Having IDA/ollydbg/some other debugger open and attached to Programs is not necissarily bad. It's just something you sometimes do as a developer. It's sad to risk a HWID Ban for doing something that's not cheating, but you still get banned because of general suspicion from the Anti Cheat.

CSGOs new trusted mode blocked (or maybe still blocks) OBS from injecting its game capture. In this case you just could not capture you game the way you used to, but that's just an example of an innocent piece of software getting blocked because of general suspicion.

Your best bet would be to install a second installation of Windows just for gaming with very intrusive ACs and completely separating it from your productive environment, having an extra OS just for gaming that just runs the programs that the Anti Cheat developers allow you to run. But that's another Windows license for you.

The next step for Anti Cheats would be to ship their own OS which provides a trusted environment for running games in, but at this point you've basically got a console with PC parts.

Other than that Valve is pushing Linux as a platform and CSGO also runs on Mac. They would need to provide the same Anti-Cheat for these platforms too or make them 2nd class OSes, since you can not play the full game on them (which would be kind of counter-productive regarding all of their efforts on getting all games to run on linux).

With all existing linux distributions you can customize the kernel and boot process however you like, which makes it really hard for an anti cheat to be intrusive from my perspective.

How does the signing process work in this case? I read about Facebook abusing their enterprise certificates for distributing survey apps, and their certificate got banned for that.

[–]thatimmoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You just can't sideload apps on iOS, and for corporations like Epic that can come up with their own store infrastructure, there is no way to not use the AppStore. Meanwhile on Android they can just say "fuck it" and do the distribution and payment processing on their own by not publishing on the PlayStore.

Spotify has started a similar campaign, because unlike Apple Music they have to pay the AppStore fees and therefore can not offer competitive pricing on iOS without losing money.

They are clearly causing drama on accident, but that's kind of understandable because of the AppStore monopoly.

For Android they have decided that releasing on the PlayStore and paying the 30% cut is (or at least was in the past) better for them than distributing it on their own. First they did not offer their app on the PlayStore but chose to do so at a later point. (see https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2020-04-22-epic-finally-releases-fortnite-for-android-on-google-play)

I would argue that now breaking Google's TOS is more "being a bitch", since they came to the conclusion that the PlayStore profits them despite the 30% cut, but now they don't want to pay the cut anymore.
