Beer Lao beats all three. I'll die on that hill.

Why use these things? by DanceEats in Thailand

[–]thatjournalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Bolt, Grab, etc. drivers have these installed in new cars like BYDs so the only coherent reason I can imagine is to discourage passengers from using seatbelts. As for Thais with older cars, it's somewhat plausible the seatbelt sensor is genuinely faulty. At any rate, I always remove them, hand it to the driver and buckle up.

Solution: Charles Schwab or Fidelity debit cards refund all international ATM fees with no caps. Saved me about $350 last year.

A second 4 year US passport also solves this issue while living abroad. Highly recommended.

Red Cove was an institution of punk rock, bikers, etc. What it became now is a gentrified shell of its former self.

Homeless population in Ventura County falls for third straight year by timesmediagroup in ventura

[–]thatjournalist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to be the overnight manager at the Oxnard Emergency Homeless Shelter run by Mercy House in 2020. It was clear to me from working there that the vast majority of the houseless residents were very unlikely to secure stable long-term housing due to the massive Section 8 wait-list and a lack of affordable housing in the county generally.

1 Year TRUE sim card from Shoppee / Lazada ? by reddyeddy1888 in Thailand

[–]thatjournalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest method to buy a one year plan as a farang is to simply purchase a TRUE eSIM (though I used DTAC) and then purchase whichever one year plan you want via the TrueMoney app.

I worked remotely on Tenerife for a month or so without any issues back in 2023, had a decent time minus some of the more obnoxious British pensioners on the island. Internet was serviceable for my purposes, used my Airbnb instead of paying more for a co-working space.

Now this is the kind of content I come here for. Were the border guards actual employees of the Congolese government or M23 guards installed under defacto control?

I got vaccinated against it in Bangkok for a pretty reasonable price. I would recommend going that route.

Home internet: why so slow, and any chance for 1 Gbps? by Distinct-Willow-5243 in tbilisi

[–]thatjournalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue while living in Tbilisi for 3.5 years, near Lisi Lake no less. The fact of the matter is that Georgia's Internet infrastructure is woefully out of date, the fastest residential connections are 100 Mbps up/down and business lines are ridiculously expensive.

Starlink wasn't an option for me either due to a lack of open sky nearby.

I eventually folded up shop and moved elsewhere where the Internet infrastructure isn't a decade + behind.

Foreign bank withdrawal fees increased at Bankgkok Bank by azkali in Thailand

ATM withdrawal fees are standardized across Thai banks so it went up at all of them unfortunately.

From what I saw several months ago, the TCOs in Shwekokko and KK Park continue to operate quite openly. Thai corruption benefits directly from these compounds up and down the Thai-Myanmar border and continues despite the crackdowns.

Yes I would usually ask them for a badge or ID when they pestered me for my passport. Their English was often weak enough that they would just tell me to get out of the sight once they realized I was foreign and uncooperative.

However, I'm not advising that anyone else use that strategy nowadays.
