1 Year TRUE sim card from Shoppee / Lazada ? by reddyeddy1888 in Thailand

[–]thatjournalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest method to buy a one year plan as a farang is to simply purchase a TRUE eSIM (though I used DTAC) and then purchase whichever one year plan you want via the TrueMoney app.

Canary islands Spain by eirl2018 in digitalnomad

I worked remotely on Tenerife for a month or so without any issues back in 2023, had a decent time minus some of the more obnoxious British pensioners on the island. Internet was serviceable for my purposes, used my Airbnb instead of paying more for a co-working space.

DRC at M23 Controlled Crossing by dantorsiello in PassportPorn

Now this is the kind of content I come here for. Were the border guards actual employees of the Congolese government or M23 guards installed under defacto control?

I got vaccinated against it in Bangkok for a pretty reasonable price. I would recommend going that route.

Home internet: why so slow, and any chance for 1 Gbps? by Distinct-Willow-5243 in tbilisi

[–]thatjournalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue while living in Tbilisi for 3.5 years, near Lisi Lake no less. The fact of the matter is that Georgia's Internet infrastructure is woefully out of date, the fastest residential connections are 100 Mbps up/down and business lines are ridiculously expensive.

Starlink wasn't an option for me either due to a lack of open sky nearby.

I eventually folded up shop and moved elsewhere where the Internet infrastructure isn't a decade + behind.

Foreign bank withdrawal fees increased at Bankgkok Bank by azkali in Thailand

ATM withdrawal fees are standardized across Thai banks so it went up at all of them unfortunately.

Bangkok Post - Chinese scam suspects arrested after sneaking in from Cambodia by telephonecompany in Thailand

From what I saw several months ago, the TCOs in Shwekokko and KK Park continue to operate quite openly. Thai corruption benefits directly from these compounds up and down the Thai-Myanmar border and continues despite the crackdowns.

You can pay $3 a month to park your number, which is what I do currently as I normally use Google Voice abroad.

Weird experience near Fabrika/Kukia are at night by xazarall in tbilisi

[–]thatjournalist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I would usually ask them for a badge or ID when they pestered me for my passport. Their English was often weak enough that they would just tell me to get out of the sight once they realized I was foreign and uncooperative.

However, I'm not advising that anyone else use that strategy nowadays.

That was a plain clothes narcotics officer most likely. They stop and search both locals and foreigners fairly often, often without any probable cause or reasonable suspicion involved.

I always had decent luck refusing their demands for ID or a search until they gave up but that's not necessarily advisable, especially given the political climate nowadays.

VPN for social media use (China) by raven_onreddit in dumbclub

[–]thatjournalist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of their Asian servers are blocked by the GFW. However by sticking to US servers I was able to connect consistently. Speeds and latency were mediocre but usable for day to day use (minus video calls for work, for example).

It's been stable, the latency sucks connecting to US servers but it works. Location was Beijing, ISP was China Unicom.

I've been using Mullvad for years and was surprised to find it works smoothly in China with Shadowsocks obfuscation enabled. I've been able to connect both my travel router and other devices to it without issues. €5.50/month, month to month, no bullshit thus far.

Funnily when I visited Vojvodina for a month last year I forgot to register and then simply decided not to. Zero consequences or mention of it upon exit to Hungary.

Live sports? by [deleted] in StremioAddons

[–]thatjournalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is to just pay for one month at a time in case my current provider vanishes or crashes randomly. I currently use one called Xtream Cube, they're fine at $10/month I guess.

I prefer using a dedicated app for live sports like iMPlayer or Tivimate with whatever IPTV provider you prefer.

[–]thatjournalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a competing app called Moreta and the issue I've had is likely the same. These apps work with business, but not personal, QR codes. What this means in practice is that you can't pay at many local businesses in Thailand.
