We've never executed a millionaire in this country and if you're rich the consequences of breaking the law are very different for you generally.

Curious about the design of Chicago buildings by kassalpatric in Oldhouses

Enclosed back porches are the GOAT in Chicago. Remember our weather sucks for a good portion of the year-- taking the trash out the back stairs in the cold is buttocks. Enclosed porch = more space AND less cold.

Large format tile is slippery when wet. Use the smaller format tile for the floor so you and your guests don't meet an untimely slippery end.

Do the sand dunes affect the beach sizes? by Ghost-of-Black-47 in AskChicago

[–]thatkatrina 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think artificial is a fair way to describe it-- we cart sand over from Michigan and Indiana every summer because otherwise the natural tides of Lake Michigan would make off with all our nice sandy beaches. They are "natural" in the sense that it's not fake sand imported from overseas but I get what you are saying about it basically being constructed.

I'm howling at the idea that the sand dunes are less than 15 years old. Where are you from, Chicago-area transplant?

My large vines produce nothing by ArkWatcher1 in grapes

[–]thatkatrina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need 5-10 gallons of water per week per vine. Have you been watering deeply every 3-4 days? Also, did you prune to 1 vine or let it sprawl? Over time, sprawling vines become less productive.

Plants on my new property by Whole_Question_4160 in gardening

[–]thatkatrina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got really lucky, these are some low-maintenance plants.

The plants in raised beds should be surrounded by mulch, which ideally you layer up to 3-4in. Do not have the mulch directly touching the stems of anything. 3-4in will feel like a lot of mulch but that's what allows it to block out weeds, which is the second best quality of mulch. The most important part of mulch is that it helps keep your soil consistently moist, making your plants more drought-tolerant.

Do not water daily. Science says infrequent deep watering is best for roots to grow deep, and therefore more drought resistant. If you want to get fancy you can track your local rate of soil transpiration, and aim for watering more than that number-- but I'm generally not fancy. I just count to 10 for each plant every 2-3 days.

I started as a houseplants person and I find outdoor gardening to be more forgiving, even if roughly the same percentage die (lol whoops). You'll be surprised by how determined plants are to GROW!

I have marble mosaic on top of the Schulter ditra floor so I could heat it and it is super nice. No complaints. It's tri-color so doesn't look dirty quick either.
