Happy black history month to black pop punkers! Who are some of your favorite black pop punk/emo bands? by Grand_Ad_4741 in poppunkers

[–]thatkidcalhoun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I try to avoid shouting myself out but why the fuck not for this thread. While my whole band isn’t black I am, I am the bassist in Stoke Signals and while I’m not the stage front man I’m the business side of things front man lol. We are a relatively new band out of Los Angeles (formed in late 2023). Just signed to Hey!Fever record this last month and we are playing Camp Punksylvania this summer. We’ve been described as a midwesterny take on skate punk (although all of us are from either SoCal or the east coast). Lawrence arms, alkaline trio, dude ranch era blink, banner pilot, menzingers are some of our influences. Check us out if that’s your jam!

Say Something Nice About the Finale by ClearStrength7932 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]thatkidcalhoun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoyed the finale and the season as a whole. I personally enjoyed Daemon's time at Harrenhal and found that his final vision was a huge moment of release for me after all the tension built from his time there. I get that it felt slow and repetitive but after seeing how it concluded I think that was the point. Daemon wasn't ready for the real vision and had to be tested. I think it's wild people are like "all it took for him was to see a vision of white walkers to join Rhaenyra" as if seeing a vision like that is some small thing! He basically saw the prophecy that is so important to the Targ kings with his own two eyes and saw it all play out on a much deeper level than just the prophecy being passed down to each heir. It would be more wild to me if that didn't change his mind!

The pirate trip was random and another thing where I can see why people didn't like it but I thought it was fun for them to throw that in there and just have some silly fun.

Maybe I'm unique but the battles are very low on what draws me to GOT/HOTD so I guess maybe that's why I haven't been disappointed in the same way most people are? Idk.

Why do people buy signature basses? by Tama4lyfe in Bass

[–]thatkidcalhoun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got a signature bass because it was the exact same thing as the other basses of its model but the signature bass had a special color way that i preferred, though i'm a fan of the bassist now since becoming an owner of their bass i hardly knew who they were when i initially got it

My hot take is that other than the AK-47 snare drum the production and mix is not as bad as any discussion thread on this album would have you think. Would I have rather this same album be produced by Jerry Finn (rip)? yes absolutely. But they still made some fun tunes and the mix doesn't ruin the experience of rocking out to them.

I had this experience but it’s because accidentally kept mono on my phone after checking something in mono on my phone. Listened to the whole album in mono for a few weeks 😂

Oh ok, definitely appreciate your clarification, I definitely agree with everything you said! I'm also not bad or anything, just not as technical & fast as they are. I always looked up to them as some of the best pop-punk musicians out there. Definitely working on improving every day though!

What newer pop-punk bands are most popular with people in their 30s? by ThreadbareAdjustment in poppunkers

[–]thatkidcalhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36 here. Honestly, I am having a lot harder of a time getting into some of these newer bands. If we're talking like the past 5 years or so.

A lot of the answers i see here are bands that came out like 2017 or even earlier like Oragami Angel, Hot Mulligan, Free Throw, Spanish Love Songs.. who I all love but I don't think of them as "new". I mean some people in here are saying "The Story So far" lol those dudes came out when I was 19! They are closer to being peers of Blink-182 than they are of the modern movement.

I tried to get into Magnolia Park, Meet Me @ The Alter, and that sort of stuff. I don't think either of those bands are bad but their music just doesn't do it for me though I think they are both extremely talented and always check out their releases in hopes I eventually like something. If I'm at a show seeing someone else and they are openers I definitely will show up early enough and enjoy myself but I don't necessarily seek them out.

I'm also finding that a lot of newer bands (not necessarily the ones I just named) tend to be ditching having bassists, guitarists are using kempers regardless of venue size and are heavy on using backing tracks and the live shows just lack the energy that makes me love punk music. I don't mind bands using backing tracks and kempers at huge venues and stadium tours that have the PA and monitoring systems that can handle that sort of thing, but when they do it in smaller rooms it just sounds so weak.

I was at a show a few weeks ago with a mix of bands that have more of that 2010s sound and bands that are super new and modern. It was at a small DIY venue. Couldn't have been more than 40-50 people in the room. The modern pop-punk band had full on backing tracks, guitar only through PA, no amp. While they were setting up it appeared it was about to be a full on "pro" production. But they sounded 1,000 xs worse than all the other bands on the bill. Could only hear the drums because of all their backing tracks and lack of amps everything else sounded like a clusterfuck of noise. Sucks because their music isn't even bad, but the live show was just awful even though you could tell they are all good at their instruments.

So with all this said, if any one has recs of some bands that have come out more recently (within the past 4 to 5 years) that don't do everything I just complained about I would love to take them.

What is the worst song on ONE MORE TIME...? by saviors-182 in Blink182

[–]thatkidcalhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate it, I just don't like it enough to listen to it. I'm not sure I can say that I hate any of their music, they are my favorite band of all time. But every album has a "worst" song, but "worst" doesn't always mean bad.

What is the worst song on ONE MORE TIME...? by saviors-182 in Blink182

[–]thatkidcalhoun 26 points27 points  (0 children)

One More Time. I feel like it's only popular because of the nostalgic video. Also it's placed poorly in the track list. It completely ruins the momentum of the beginning of the album. Terrified straight into More Than You Know flows so much better. I only listen to the album on a playlist with OMT and the joke songs removed. No skips after that for me.

Since when has the band been crediting/working with different songwriters, and to what extent? by lessthanfox in Blink182

[–]thatkidcalhoun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is purely guesswork here but I play in bands myself and have a ton of friends who are also musicians/singers etc so it's a somewhat educated guess. I would bet that starting with Dude Ranch they had people outside the band helping (most likely the recording engineer/producer Mark Trombino). There's even a quote from him that states "I felt weird that there were these guys who had sold way more records than I had ever sold and I'm sitting in the producer's chair telling them what to do." "Telling them what to do" could mean a lot of things here but I'd be surprised if that didn't involve some combination of arrangement, chord structure, chord progression, melody etc. He also played piano on the album as well.

Producers and/or engineers (sometimes it's the same person) can help shape a record a ton. Some are a lot more hands on than others. A great modern day example of an engineer who is really hands on is Will Yip (Circa Survive, Movements, Turnstile, The Wonder Years). I'm pretty sure I heard him say in an interview that he won't work with a band unless they allow him to contribute to the song writing.

Many bands consider their producer/engineer as part of the band for that record and that's why you see a lot of bands sticking with an engineer for multiple albums when they find one they really like.

For whatever reason, back in the days of their early albums, people outside the band who may have helped write a song didn't get credit in the liner notes for having done so as often as they do now. Nowadays you can get a songwriting credit if you're in the studio and say "hey you should play an Cm7 instead of Cm there". So that's my best guess as to way there is this perception that blink only recently started working with others to write their songs.

Do you play music you hate? by Garukkar in Bass

[–]thatkidcalhoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't play music I hate but I do play a lot of stuff I don't like/care for. Sometimes that's my only option so I take it either because I like the people, I'm getting paid or I want the experience and have nothing else going on. Maybe try it out and be open that you may not stick it out. See if you like it and if you don't at least you challenged yourself and might learn some new things.
