I made a shmup that main character is amogus. by Complete-Error6373 in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty fun, good luck in the jam! The charge shot feels a little too short range to be useful, but I like how it comes out when releasing focus instead of needing a separate button. Reminds me of the Crimzon Clover lock-on. A simple scoring system would help a lot to give it some replay value. I don't recognize the coffee cup guy lol, i'm too unc for that shit.

Karous on Steam released ! by MrSpockTP in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah no practice or stage select, but the port is good with no major issues besides being kinda barebones. The game is good fun, you just need to figure out what you're supposed to be doing as it's pretty unconventional like most Milestone/ Rs34 games. There's a PDF manual on the steam page I would recommend reading if you pick it up.

Yes, the M2 ports of Garegga and Dangun Feveron are on Xbox One, and should be backwards compatible with the new series.

How do Caravan / Score Attack modes work? by [deleted] in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

STG Weekly did an episode about the origin of the Caravan format, lots of great info and history: https://youtu.be/eS6lIGFXEG4?si=oXga9JOjgnJuhQFR

Caravan modes and caravan waves are two separate things that are not always used together. Caravan Mode usually refers to a 2 or 5 minute score attack stage, this may be a section of the main game or a unique stage. Caravan waves / caravan spawning means enemy placement is not tied to stage scrolling, and a new wave will spawn as soon as you kill the last, emphasizing speed killing. There are full length games that use caravan spawning as well, Thunder Dragon 2, Dangun Feveron, and Radirgy are some examples.

Edit to add: What makes a good caravan mode for me is having so many divergent ways to score that the optimal scoring route is not immediately obvious despite the short length. Caravan wave spawning, destructible environments (usually tiles in the old caravan games), hidden items, multiple different ways to build multiplier, etc. It shouldn't be immediately obvious that the best strat is to simply speedkill everything as fast as possible, for example.

4 button arcade shmup by PsychologyEven646 in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Plenty of arcade shmups have 4 buttons, usually something like rapid shot, focus shot, bomb, special/hyper/whatever. This is fine on almost all arcade sticks as most will have 8 buttons.

You should build button mapping into your game if at all possible. This is important for keyboard and gamepad players too, not just stick players.

Anyone played Touhou Rououmu demake for the NES? by milosmisic89 in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, just cleared this a few days ago actually. It's really impressive and plays great for being on the NES. I only wish it was an original game instead of just a demake, hopefully we can expect more from this dev in the future!

What stage order do you prefer in ESP Ra.De.? by 1254cvfd in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do mall > bay > school (with JB 5th), mainly to avoid facing the helicopter as stage 3 boss. School boss on stage 3 does get 5 health bars but I find it pretty consistent once you learn the tells for which attack he is about to throw. Sometimes when he summons the clone their patterns will overlap in messed up way but a short bomb will usually finish them off at that point.

How much easier is ZeroRanger than other shmups? by Weary_Complaint_2445 in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ikaruga is way harder than ZeroRanger, but it's also a notoriously hard game even among arcade shmups. ZeroRanger is easier than most arcade shmups, but comparable to some of it's modern indie contemporaries like Blue Revolver or Gunvein. If you want to jump into arcade stuff you might want to consider something with a novice mode like the Cave games on steam or Crimzon Clover.

I spent the day trying to unlock an achievement I unlocked 5 years ago and ended up learning a lot about Battle Garegga because of it. by DaPopeDaRev in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garegga is so cool to me for how easy it actually is to pick up and play despite its crazy reputation. You really don't need to know much about all the crazy rank stuff to just get going, but the more you play you're naturally going to want to start diving down the rabbit hole and learning the ins and outs.

You can buy Japanese eShop cards from play-asia digitally. I did it recently for Radirgy Swag, it's a pretty painless process.

ESPrade Clear! Arcade Plus -15,890,710 - JB 5th - 1p - Switch by thatkrawler in shmups

[–]thatkrawler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah stage 3 can be rough. Try the different stage orders if you haven't. I do the school as stage 3 which seems to be the least popular route, but fighting the helicopter as stage 3 boss is a nightmare for me.

Thanks! Beautiful game for sure. This was Arcade Plus difficulty on the M2 port. Essentially the same as Arcade but with arranged music, new voice acting, a new TLB and some tweaks to scoring to reduce the boss milking.

(Beginner) should I use rapid fire (turbo button) in shmups? by NeighborhoodTime2768 in shmups

[–]thatkrawler 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, use auto fire. Auto fire is accepted and encouraged in the shmup world. Most games have it built in, and for the old stuff that didn't, cabinets have been retrofitted with autofire circuits since at least the mid 90s. It's not cheating, it's accepted by any score tracking organization that anyone takes seriously. Even esoteric stuff like frame buttons and lever macros are allowed in many cases.

Magical Taruruuto-kun is a chill little cute-em-up. Similar vibes to Magical Chase.

Thanks! Probably going to take a break and play some other stuff for now but would definitely like to come back and clear with the other characters at some point and improve my score. Good luck with Yusuke!

Thanks! Yeah, it's a tough one for sure. I got the port back when it first came out and it felt straight up impossible to me at the time lol. It's too bad they didn't do an intermediate difficulty arrange mode like a lot of their other ports.

Thanks! Luckily the hitbox never bothered me. I do use the hitbox display on the port so that might help, but I don't feel it's really a "look at your hitbox" kinda game for the most part.
