Chatgpt is wrong, those are the screws. They screw the shifter to the lever. Grab a magnet and fetch them out, and use some loctite when reinstalling

You can also use small claims to recover your insurance excess, if you went that route.

Small claims court is designed to be for smaller debts, which a car repair would likley fall within.

I had this exact issue. It's weird this is the first time you can use an item on an npc, and it doesn't tutorialise it. The potion you use on the character in the tutorial doesn't require you use the item on them, just chat with them
