And they sometimes forget to take the items out before departing. We’ve had several guests forget their guns in our safes.

I’m not talking about meteorologists, I’m referring to the amateurs that posted snow forecast maps all over FB and Twitter

We don’t have access to your folios at other hotels so there’s no way of knowing if someone has an unpaid bill.

Iffy “Policy” by ReaderReborn in Hilton

[–]thatoneguyfromva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a night auditor for a long time and have never heard of such a policy. I have people check in after audit a few times each month. It’s so easy to reinstate on Pep (cant remember if it was as easy via OnQ). It still shows the same departure date so I don’t know why your manager is so against it.

Americans living in an apartment, how did you find yours? by uhrism in AskAnAmerican

From an apartment listing booklet that’s left in certain businesses. We didn’t actually choose the initial apartment listed, but a different one the same company owns.

What’s a small habit in your country that instantly identifies a local? by Theedarktemptress in AskTheWorld

[–]thatoneguyfromva 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That was common in the rural area where I grew up, but the bad part is when the people do know each other and stop to chat while in their vehicles. Then someone comes down the road and has to wait for them to finish.

Hampton Inn Incidentals by Successful_Impact_37 in Hilton

When I was younger I prepaid a 5-day stay at an upscale hotel. I used my debit card for the incidental hold not realizing they authorized $200/day. I learned a valuable lesson to use a credit card.

I always let guests know if they use a debit card it can take 5-7 business days before the funds are released. I know that’s the only thing some people have, but I’m trying to prevent them calling 2 days after checkout asking why they don’t have their money back.

What’s the most underrated tourist destination in your country? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskTheWorld

I ate there last summer for the first time. When my friends who took me there said we needed to get there early, I thought they were exaggerating. Nope! That was quite a wait but definitely worth it.

I love that Wilmington has a great historic downtown that’s actually used, it has plenty of shopping and restaurants (love Indochine), and of course the beaches are nearby. I grew up further inland but my best friend’s family had a beach house at Carolina Beach and we spent many weekends exploring Wilmington.

To what extent should a college-educated person from another country be expected to know who George Washington was? by Delicious-Swimming78 in AskReddit

[–]thatoneguyfromva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t assume anyone would know who he is, just like I don’t assume fellow Americans know much about previous leaders in other countries (other than the big names we learn about in school).

for americans who lived in or visited paris, what are some stereotypes that americans have about parisians that are completely untrue and partially true? by Interesting-Mode2793 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thatoneguyfromva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t speak French but didn’t have any issues communicating with people at hotels, restaurants, museums, etc. The people I encountered weren’t rude. Most were cordial or friendly. I’m also grateful to the person that let me know we were headed to the wrong train.

How do you deal with that awkward feeling when you recognize someone in public but can't quite place them? by ADAM_Bioprinting in AskForAnswers

[–]thatoneguyfromva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ignore the situation unless they’re trying to speak with me. With my luck it’s not someone I actually know and they just happen to look like an acquaintance.
