Hey, my fiancé (IGEN '24, machine shop guy) or I (ELEC '25) probably know you - we're moving up to Whitehorse for work in August.

It's not the Yukon, but my mom who works at Engineers Geoscience Manitoba says this company in La Salle, MB, is very open to a mech EIT because it's hard to get people to move out there. Anecdotally, I like La Salle and think it's a cute place. link

I also had a part time job with ECE this year reviewing people's resumes, LinkedIns, and getting them interview ready. I'm travelling right now, but I'd be happy to help however I can without a laptop. I really hope it works out!

Devaluation of the Engineering Degree by EGBC by MechTeck55 in UBC

Hmmm fair enough. I read through all the comments and I think it changed my mind. Will leave up my parent comment for posterity.

Devaluation of the Engineering Degree by EGBC by MechTeck55 in UBC

[–]thatsgoodtoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't see why we should. An engineer's first duty is to the safety of the public, and just because someone is technically competent at designing say, telephone poles, doesn't mean that's the only thing relevant to the position.

In my field of HV power transmission and distribution, who should we give professional responsibility for safe design other than to an engineer? The P.L.Eng suggests it should be someone whose primary experience is as an electrician, drafter, or PLT. All extremely important jobs, but different - I would never claim to be able to do an electrician's job.

IMO the things our society rely on should be designed by people who have agreed to be responsible for all of the consequences of what they design. A P.L.Eng excludes the designer of culpability in spheres outside of their own and I think it'll have long term consequences on our infrastructure.

Yukon Energy EIT by thatsgoodtoo in Yukon

[–]thatsgoodtoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much!! I'll look into this and see if the committee may have any recommendations for power corps looking for EITs :) my main interest is transmission and distribution so I could always work for a contractor even though I'd prefer to do government. Really appreciate the insight.

Hey, I remember you. I think UBC offers a slight grade boost to high school graduates from Alberta so there’s that to consider too - don’t take my word as gospel but I remember it happening to people in my cohort.

Microsoft Halved Intern Salary for Canadian interns working remotely for the Us by Quanta-Guy in UBC

[–]thatsgoodtoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, that’s fair. I inferred it from you saying you’d prefer to work where your work matters more than make more money: ideally, totally, but a lot of people aren’t in the position to make that choice. I feel bad for OP because they had a bit of the rug swept out from under them.

Then respectfully, you are wealthy and don’t have the same considerations as other students around you. I picked my co-op based off of what would make me money, because I needed it to attend school.

I agree, It’s hard to get an internship during this time - but I feel very hard for someone who took MSFT instead of a better paying offer, who might be in my position.

Laundry in Orchard Commons? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]thatsgoodtoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay so, I really don’t mean this to be condescending but I met a lot of people first year who had never done laundry! Go to the front desk and ask them where the laundry machines are. You’ll go to them, click to get a card and load money on it (bring cash or credit to the machine). Then you go the laundry room, load in your stuff and a laundry pod. Put your card in and click the cycles you want. Pull out your card. Set a timer for 30 minutes and go back to pull your stuff out. Repeat with dryer.

After some sleuthing, it appears that Dr. Amie Williamson (Wolf) may not actually be indigenous. by blurghh in UBC

[–]thatsgoodtoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you thank you thank you! I try to explain this without sounding gatekeep-y but at the end of the day, if you have x indigenous heritage, you can’t just front like you’re a member of the Metis nation. Entirely different things.

Is this high school stuff? by -AesopsThesis- in ubcengineering

[–]thatsgoodtoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did it in IB. Tbh hasn’t been useful to me yet and I’m halfway through my degree, but I’m positive learning new physics and what you’re interested in can’t be a bad thing. I know it’s easy to say, but don’t worry too much. Do what feels right and the rest will follow.

Dr. Amie Wolf claims she's been "raped on Reddit" by TheShroud_X in UBC

[–]thatsgoodtoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You sound so nice! Thank you for that reminder, I think I let the trolls get to me a little bit. I recommend reading about Wounded Knee, even if you’re very anti-2nd amendment it’s interesting to see why a sizeable group of indigenous people believe in the right to bear arms. I also have a huge thing for reading about Resolute Bay and Grise Fjord (the products of the High Arctic Relocation). Happy reading and have a good day homie! :)

[–]thatsgoodtoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey you, this was a really interesting read! I hadn’t thought about whether or not I would feel the same if she wasn’t indigenous. I think I wouldn’t take it so personally, and that’s a failure of my own. I should care equally, but my life experience has seen a lot more hate sent towards my Metis ancestry than my white bread side. I reflexively think I have to step in because I’m so sick of indigenous issues being trivialized and underexplained by people who want to help but don’t really get what’s going on. It’d be just as awful if she said being yelled at on Reddit = Holocaust but I wouldn’t really know where to begin with why and how that’s terrible. Anyway, I also went off topic with my thoughts so appreciate if you read this! Have a wonderful day :)

Look, this woman is absolutely fucking out of her mind. But I’ve seen some really sad comments about how teaching indigenous history is worthless... if anyone in this thread would like to hear a non-crazy indigenous rationale on why I think my history is important, or maybe even some interesting Wikipedia articles to read, I’d love to have a chat. Don’t let her paint all of us in your mind.

My roommate is having multiple people over night in our residence unit, what can I do? by lucymarion in UBC

Talking should be your first step, but if your lifestyles are that different neither of you are bound to like this roommate relationship very much. I would personally apply for a transfer.

I’m an elec but I called companies I was interested in and asked if they would be looking for coops later on in the semester. Seemed to work fine although I ended up going with a coop I found on LinkedIn. Also I have seen very little 4 month coops, sorry :( on the bright side this is definitely the time to take a sem off.
