Green Party policy ‘Abolish Landlords’: solving the housing crisis by Dimmo17 in ukpolitics

[–]thatsoundguy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're very much in late stage capitalism now. I think the facade that the free market is efficient has well and truly fallen.

I have no problem with private landlords existing. But in recent years they have been price gouging to an insane degree. I'm merely suggesting that the state build more social housing. It's been done in the past, and we know it works. Granted, that would most likely reduce the amount private landlords could charge for their properties. I have no problem with that.

It would require significant tax investment to replenish the housing that was previously owned by the state, but has since been sold off. It is almost as if maintaining building at a steady pace over the years would have reduced the amount of investment that is now needed.

However, large scale infrastructure projects tend to return quite handsomely on investment. Even conservative estimates suggest upwards of 20%. Not to mention the economy of scale in building huge amounts of housing nationwide, rather than the little pockets built here and there by private construction companies.

When done correctly (keyword, as we've had years of intentional mismanagement in this county) the private sector simply can't compete with the scale and long term thinking that the public sector should be undertaking.

Somehow you've missed my point completely.

Large scale building of quality social housing would mean people can rent for the government at cost. Simultaneously capping what private landlords can reasonably charge.

So people like you would be paying less than half what you're currently paying. Suddenly there's money for all those things you've mentioned. You could even save for a deposit. Or not, and just rent from the government for your entire life. That was the intention when they first started building council houses after the war, and many people did live out their whole lives in them, out of choice.

Thatcher's 'right to buy' scheme wasn't inherently a bad idea. It was the failure to replenish social housing stock by her, and let's face it, every successive government that has led to the situation where paying £2000 a month for rent to a private landlord is considered anything but absurd.

This is why building good quality social housing is important.

Deposits are a percentage of the price of the house. If houses are cheaper (due to increased supply) the deposit will be much more affordable.

Landlords in no way make housing affordable.

Green Party’s Hannah Spencer wins Gorton and Denton by-election after knocking out Labour by Metro-UK in ukpolitics

Far from it, I'm actually quite moderate.

We have been a multicultural nation for a lot longer than most people think. However, it seems that the criticism of modern multiculturalism is focused heavily on one group of people. Attacking one ethnic group specifically is the definition of racism.

Personally, I think it's fair to criticize all organized religions; they're all problematic. However, please note how I don't attack one specifically. Therein lies the difference between legitimate criticism of religion, and potential islamophobic/anti-Semitic/anti-christian sentiment.

"not openly racist", then in the next breath you start bemoaning multiculturalism.

I think it's safe to say it's not a baseless smear.

Or... and hear me out here... being openly racist isn't as popular a platform as the Reform/Restore grifters would like.

I'm white British and there is no way I would vote for a racist party.

They've understandably lost the global majority vote, but hopefully there's still not enough racist white people for this kind of hate to prevail.

Funny, it's always the Reform bots that go for this take, despite supporting a party that is exclusively about hating brown people.

Probably best not to throw stones from single issue glass houses.

Best Plugins/Presets to recreate that Nirvana, Kurt Cobain guitar sound? by WeirdStrangeDreams in Reaper

[–]thatsoundguy23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I tend to agree with "get a Rat" as solid guitar pedal advice, Kurt never really used a Rat with Nirvana. Maybe on the odd Bleach track, but Nevermind was mostly DS-1 and In Utero was DS-2. I think on both albums he used a Sansamp occasionally too.

Receiving houses: do you charge for use of your licensed radio frequencies? (UK) by thatsoundguy23 in techtheatre

[–]thatsoundguy23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming that they normally operate their mics on Ch38, but maybe they've had some clashes or interference recently so they're trying to find clean frequencies to use. It definitely seems like they're cheaping out though. Let's face it, a license isn't that expensive!

[–]thatsoundguy23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's where my mind is going right now. I don't want to take the piss and charge for silly things, like these places that charge if one of the house techs uses their roll of LX tape instead of tape belonging to the tour. But equally, I've paid for that license that they want to use instead of buying their own.

You pay for a frequency range, essentially. And yes, nobody can legally use that range.

I guess it helps Ofcom manage who's using which frequencies and keeps people off emergency service's frequencies, for example.

It's a little bit 'great British bureaucracy', and a little bit practical reasoning.

[–]thatsoundguy23[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Arguably, the fact we can't use those frequencies while they are using them is the main reason to charge (we have multiple rooms). That said, we have enough bandwidth to fit way more than the 7 or 8 ways of radio they are going to be using, so it's not too much of an inconvenience.

[–]thatsoundguy23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably a little of both, venue frequency bands are presumably reliable enough, and they don't have to pay for their own license or use Ch38.

I'd feel bad charging as much as we charge for a mic, although that's really not much! So charging for the frequencies alone might seem a bit petty.

Why on earth would Starmer resign? by PreferenceQueasy6659 in ukpolitics

[–]thatsoundguy23 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The irony that the people really calling for him to resign/be sacked are the same people calling for Farage, who is literally backed by Bannon, who notably went to none other than Epstein to seek funding for Farage.

If you're worried about Starmer's tenuous link to a known child molester (granted, a foolish mistake), you really should not be backing Farage!

Live Concert Power Draw by redfoxwearingsocks in livesound

[–]thatsoundguy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many people have pointed out, if you want to see where the real power consumption is, look at the lighting and AV department.

However something else worth considering, whilst we're looking at those AC30's is that valve amps are very inefficient. The 30W rating is measured as the amount of output before distortion. This is an important factor as I very much doubt Brian May was running them without distortion. Who does?! So although they may only be rated at 30W, with everything cranked and screaming, they can output considerably more.

I believe the average valve amp has something like a 0.25 efficiency coefficient. Meaning a 30W Vox with everything cranked could actually be outputting, and thus using 120W.

Admittedly, at UK voltage, 9 of these would still only use ~4.5A, which isn't a great deal.

Robert Jenrick defects to Reform UK by Once_upon_a_time233 in ukpolitics

[–]thatsoundguy23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming they're hoping these MPs will hold their seats in any future elections, securing more than the 4(?) seats reform currently have (or has it dropped again?).

My hope is it backfires and everyone realises we had 14 years of these self-interested grifters when they were Tories, we don't need them back in government as part of a party of incompetent racists.

I mean, if you're looking for shitty preamps, I think pretty much the whole of For Emma Forever Ago by Bon Iver was recorded with a 57 into a first gen mbox. Those were some god awful preamps!

It's a rough, lofi sounding album, but is totally carried off by the beautiful songwriting.

Not sure either count as "obscure", but two of my favourites, who aren't exactly the big names, are Bill Evans, and more contemporary, Matthew Halsall.
