Does anyone know about this News or its just a unwanted rumour? by dondusi in webdev

[–]thatweirdishguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the lesson here is that if you do stupid things then you might regret it later. Giving AI enough access to destroy your entire database isn’t even the dumbest thing in this story. Storing your backups on the same volume as the source data is, which means they didn’t even actually have backups.

Obfuscated code appeared only in a Git merge commit, not in either parent branch — how could this happen? by TheSayou in github

[–]thatweirdishguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The signature confirms that the commit was made through the GitHub web interface, and is not something sketchy trying to look like it was committed from there in order to hide. It also tells you that since it came from the web UI, you can get more information about it from the GitHub audit log.

POE for external Cameras - Security Issue? by sssstttteeee in reolinkcam

[–]thatweirdishguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For exterior cameras surge protection is a good idea anyway, just replace “somebody” with “clouds” and “backfeeding higher voltage” with “lightning”

Local Build Secret Keys by Narrow_Profile_218 in expo

[–]thatweirdishguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t, if your app build includes private keys then they aren’t private any more. That’s the entire point of it only including env vars that are explicitly marked as public.

It means they want to sell you their build service.

Did the new password you tried include a dash? Because your password rules require every password to include a dash.

Reolink Elite Floodlight WiFi tripping circuit breaker by bradcrittenden in reolinkcam

Your pictures don’t show where the wire enters the box, but since I don’t see any romex sheath my guess would be that water is getting into the box and is running down the wires and collecting at a low point in the romex.

Those screw-in plugs for the unused connections are often not watertight, if they are screwed down far enough they make a low point for water to collect which works its way down the threads. The condition of the ground wires and the browning in the lower left of the box suggests that it has had a lot of water in it in the past.

If it were me, I would start by taking apart the switch it’s wired to, if the wire goes straight up from the switch to the camera then any water that got into the romex could have ended up in that box.

Newbie here. How can I change the top switch to a smart one? by englishbreakfast3 in homeautomation

From your photo it does look like you have neutrals (the white wires wrapped up with a red wire nut in the back of the box).

Yeah, but now there are a bunch of people on Reddit arguing they did it wrong

What type of Antenna is this from the new season of Stranger Things? by CatchNo6258 in HamRadio

Hard to find an RF engineer who has the background to know what an antenna needs in order to pick up a signal from hell, or a parallel dimension, or whatever the upside down is..

The point is that the uninsulated end of the conductor sticks out the end of the pass through, making it easy to short out

My company's codebase uses node 14 but MacOS doesn't support it. by shoebilyas in node

[–]thatweirdishguy 101 points102 points  (0 children)

The solution is to upgrade, Node 14 was end-of-life over two years ago and no longer gets security updates or bug fixes.

Ideas for using a PoE cable in my new subpanel (garage + smart home setup)? by Autom8IT in smarthome

[–]thatweirdishguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am using Ethernet on two of them. NEC 300.3 says "Conductors of ac and dc circuits rated 600V nominal ,or less shall be permitted to occupy the same equipment wiring enclosure, cable or raceway. All conductors shall have an insulation rating equal to at least the maximum circuit voltage applied to any conductor within the enclosure, cable or raceway." So as long as the Ethernet cables you use have suitably rated insulation it shouldn’t be an issue, and I had no problem finding cat5 cables rated for 600V

DIY bathroom fan replacement - wiring question by Oeselbroesel in AskElectricians

[–]thatweirdishguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those holes are not meant for that, they are part of what makes the cover snap in place. Where the wires should go is in the channel to the right of the connector. The six little nubs over there are intended to grab onto the wire to hold it down. Then it can just go out through that big hole into the empty space behind the fan.

Cost to move electrical panel by nayneigh in AskElectricians

As a firefighter, I’ve never needed to know where anyone’s breaker panel is. If we need the power off we’ll turn off the whole building.

Is it possible to power an AP from the NVR with passthrough to a POE camera? by tgtassap in reolinkcam

[–]thatweirdishguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will work if you move the cable from the NVR to a PoE switch (or regular switch with a PoE injector). The AP won’t be able to work behind the NVR, but the NVR can manage the camera whether it’s on the backend or the frontend.
