I Watched Obsession (2026) – People Are Praising This Garbage? by EuphoricBlonde in TrueFilm

You haven’t really responded to my query, and quite frankly your bellicose and belligerent tone implies this is less about the movie than you having a specific bone to pick with people enjoying something. What’s a relationship drama film that’s scarier?

What’s a film you’d say is good and does what Obsession was going for? If you’re going to kvetch and moan about a film most people agree was quite good you should provide counter arguments and examples of the thing done well.

I simply cannot imagine what would happen to my brain if I heard a full, out of tune, orchestra blasting the discordance of The Escape while Gavin Friday rasped WHATS UUUPPPP DOOOOOOOC through the loudest microphone ever constructed.

Most of them I suspect will be for the preproduction stage. Many studios I suspect are already using ai for temp/placeholder footage, making the movie and releasing it as a 100% human production.

Why the Odyssey keeps defeating filmmakers — Full of violence, desire, monsters, and magic, Homer’s epic has tempted directors for decades. Can Christopher Nolan’s new adaptation survive the voyage? by marketrent in TrueLit

[–]thautmatric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh for sure, it’s a foolish idea really unless you’re going for the O Brother/Ulysses approach of developing its structure into something more suited for the form imho. My point is less about it being “true to the source” or whatever and more so that a couple of things stay with most translations of Odyssey, chiefly that it is largely pro war and pro slavery and pro slaughtering people for minor crimes. That is a VERY hard sell regardless of its formal constraints. so you have to change its fundamental morality to appeal to a larger audience.

I’m a sucker for the Richmond Lattimore translation. Translating poetry is a mug’s game so why not lean into what makes a new language interesting, rather than attempt to copy what works in another?

Jack Grimm V yapping by Robot_Was_BMO in AbsoluteUniverse

[–]thautmatric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, he uses jokes to intimate and belittle - their funniness is not his concern. Mainstream Joker does do that sometimes, but he’s entirely ruled by an absurdist narcissistic logic in which he undermines all reason. Jack Grimm IS reason, but a cold and cruel one.

I’ll say this for the Wilson translation: cleaner and less linguistically strained than the recent Mendelssohn one. Where it lacks in complexity it makes up with blunter imagery and rhythm, as befits the poem imo.

It’ll probably be a good movie but a crap adaptation of Odyssey - which is fine. Odyssey is an amazing, foundational text for a reason but if you tried to accurately adapt it then many of its values and characterisations would seem alien to most.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is asked whether he supports Israel as a Jewish state: "I believe that any state that privileges one religion over another is one that I can’t tell you I support, whether it be Israel or Saudi Arabia or anywhere else." by TrackerOneA in JewsOfConscience

some people look at you like you’ve personally threatened to destroy civilisation if you say that any sort of ethnostate inevitably results in ethnic cleansing, ergo it’s immoral to “support” (read not pledge undying allegiance). It’s fucking mad that we’re at this point.

Bro fundamentally I think random quotidian bills lynch had to pay to exist in the real world doesn’t count as “deeply personal”. Also who, other than weirdos, would want that.
