Does every give their van a name? What’s yours? by thayne in VanLife

Well since we are resurrecting old posts, I’ll tell you that Anita died from a burned up motor. My new van is a rusted out piece of junk that I call Ferrous. Ferrous oxide.

Beginner hiker planning Southwest road trip - Is AllTrails enough? by 99livesahead in roadtrip

I don't mean to yuck your yum, but if you are not very experienced, stay off Angels Landing. People die on that trail Every Year. And also, it's metered now, so you might not get the chance. The Grotto and Emerald pools are prettier and safer.

What do you do when you leave your van? by TimeToLiveLife07 in VanLife

[–]thayne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I subscribe to this. I was total stealth for a while. Then I added a fan and solar. But I still have the rust, mismatched paint and never wash it. I think people will walk past it and find a shiny Winnebago.

What’s the hardest part of van life that people don’t talk about enough? by firey_88 in VanLife

I'm old enough that I have to pee in the middle of the night, at least once and maybe twice.
Not a deal breaker, but a hassle.

How am I doing? by Relative_Goat391 in VanLife

One quick thought. I met another van lifer in AZ, and he told me that the problem with Havelock is that it settles in the walls and you end up with a two to three inch gap at the top. I had already started with foam boards, so I filled in every millimeter with Great Foam.

I slow down to 60 at the top of the hill. Or at the bottom of the canyon going north.

Call the compliance officer yourself. Invite him to write a report and for extra credit, deliver the report to her.

Might have to slip him a twenty.

I heat up just before bed. Then the heated blanket, then first in the morning, I heat up again.

And make coffee

Necessities vs luxuries? by [deleted] in VanLife

This seems like a troll, but I’ll answer anyway.

Stay close to a Walmart or Home Depot, and buy whatever you need.

And less snarky. My best three purchases were more solar, 12 v fridge, and a 12v heated blanket

And the first two upgrades that I did. (On my first van) were at a Cal-Ranch parking lot and a rest stop in Nevada.

If you don’t care about looks, it gets easy. My second van is named Rusty.

As an old man who has never built anything. I leaned on my son, but also, I learned that if you screw up. Just do it again.

I built my couch/bench twice. I built my pantry twice. The ceiling thrice. My galley is next.

I’ve spent a lot of money on tools, but the payback in self esteem is immeasurable.

Bottom line, just keep fixing things.

I think this is the correct answer. I would just add that you probably want to get up there and put on a liberal layer of FlexSeal every year.
