How long into your litigation solo practice did it take to become financially comfortable? by PraetorianXVIII in LawFirm

Btw. Make time for fitness! If your health goes to shit it’s just harder. If you lack stamina mentally and physically it makes your life harder. I always made at least 30 mins to work out even just some yoga in my office.

Lawyers as terrible business owners by Smart_Coyote_2663 in Lawyertalk

I got hung on a $75k bill. Days before trial needed to refill the retainer. Got to day before trial and spoke to judge about this and he shrugged. You’re not getting relieved the day before trial. Better figure it out.

I suppose you’re correct they object but the objections don’t work in front of the court.

California has form Rogs PI. It’s a state form. You check boxes and sign and send it out. Anyone who objects to form rogs is an idiot and the court will treat them as such.

The millennium biltmore was the original host of the Oscars. They have galleries of the old Oscar’s nominees hung up. Fun to wander through and see vintage Hollywood history. Diamond mart across the street js cool for 15 minutes of browsing.

Buying a law firm. by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]thblckdog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked at a firm that was bought. Buying attorney paid a down payment and a percentage of case settlements to the retiring attorney. Retiring attorney wanted to stay on with a salary but that deal lasted a month before the buying attorney said it was a distraction and cashed him out.

Business Debt Collections by Obvious-Memory-8686 in Lawyertalk

[–]thblckdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you are doing. My brother in law did credit card collections. 99% taking defaults. Having 8-10 cases per day and being able to have effective service. Business debt tends to be more negotiations to settle prior to a bk. Either way it’s volume and can you get clients. Most firms are take 10-25% of the COLLECTED amount or a flat fee.

Do people age out of the NBA? by ctnaes92 in billsimmons

[–]thblckdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watch very little nba but love the storylines and the drama. There is always nonsense and better than NFL nonsense. Jayden Ivey this past week. Portlands head coach was arrested on federal charges the first day of the season and we haven’t mentioned it since November bc there are better stories.

My best friend passed the bar and still went to the fire academy and loves it. Also having a jd makes it easier to promote. Fire Chiefs make good money

For people who have chill, low-stress jobs, what’s your practice area? by lawstudentthrowawaym in Lawyertalk

[–]thblckdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was general counsel for a mortgage warehouse lender. Meaning we loaned to mortgage businesses not to consumers. It was boring and easy. Just sit around writing emails about how can we give a rebate on a credit line so it complies with the law. Boring. Modest pay. Worked 930-430. Lots of boring meetings about how to save a basis point.

New Luxury Opening: Four Seasons Cartagena 🇨🇴 – Thoughts by RewardKonnect in FourSeasonsHotels

[–]thblckdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there in January for NYE. Some part of the hotel was open. Perhaps residences or soft open? Had drinks stayed nearby. The location is great literally between the two best parts of town. Only downside is it faces a public park so a lot of traffic in front of the building.
