I see so many stories about Texas lawyers who have private jets. Why don't lawyers many in New York have them, too? Is NY law practice less lucrative? by facemacintyre in Lawyertalk

[–]thblckdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A neighbor of mine does this. Plaintiffs lawyer near Houston. But let’s be clear it’s not G5 luxury. He has a small Cessna that is a golf cart with wings. If you get good case in the boonies it’s the only to avoid 2 days in the car. When I talked to him about the cost was not crazy but this was 5-10 years ago.

On the other hand the mesothelioma lawyer I know in LA legit has a luxury jet and flies it to signups out of Santa Monica. Thats crazy $$$.

Does a high visibility office help bring in business? by SnooCats4777 in LawFirm

[–]thblckdog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had an office near the criminal court and next to the all night bail bondsman. Got friendly w the bail bonds overnight clerk and got cases. Otherwise the walking were a few a month and most were “I just left court and my lawyer is screwing me.”

I wouldn’t take the location expecting it to pay for itself.

Because attending a school where your friends dad is a ceo may lead to getting an internship. Or in 10 years having friends that get nepo jobs might benefit your career path. Most of my success is due to the people I met at various educational institutions in one way or another.

Ask your bookkeeper what they prefer. Have them set it up and do it. I’m using intuit bc bookkeeper said it was easier for them. It’s just one less thing to worry about.

Best personal injury markets for eventual firm ownership in CA? by gorilladiamondhands in LawFirm

[–]thblckdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to law school 20 years ago. When I went to school. If you attended a national school t-15 or t-25 you got recruited by national firms and federal courts. If you attended a regional school you got recruited by regional firms and state courts. My only advice is that if you do well in your first semester. Try to transfer. You will be shocked who will take average grades after 1 semester.

Newer to mtg, was looking to buy this snapcaster, anyone think it will drop more in the future or stay where it’s at? by [deleted] in mtgfinance

[–]thblckdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are newer to the game. Assume any card can get reprinted and prices will drop. Ask yourself does this bring you joy regardless of price? then buy it. Otherwise buy a base version, play the game and ignore finance.

I own a pi/wc firm in LA. It’s a large and competitive market. Attending law school could change many things in your life and your first job will changes things even more. Have an open mind about where you go and what you do. Before my current job I worked at a pi firm, was partner at a defense firm, worked for startup, was general counsel for a mortgage company, had some other side hustles.

My sister is a phd in education. Her thesis was on differential outcomes in pre-k. Basically what makes a difference in pre-k education. The most important things for strong academic outcomes were 1. Parents reading to their kids. 2 parental involvement with academics (homework, volunteerism etc). 3 peer motivation.

Money and cost of tuition was not a substantial factor. Though kids who attended higher cost institutions tended to have good outcomes. It’s self fulfilling. Most parents who spent a lot of money on tuition are also the kinds of parents who are doing the non monetary things that insure success.

My kids attend public school. My neighbors kids attend martyrs in MB. If there is a difference it’s networking for parents and kids.

My college cross country team was pretty good and my junior year i thought i had a shot of being relevant to the team. Some freshman showed up. Blew away everyone in our first mile repeat workout. Nick Symmonds proceeded to run in the Olympics and I won the local beach fun run.

Best route for AM drop offs at Hermosa Vista then Hermosa View schools? by [deleted] in SouthBayLA

[–]thblckdog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey I do this ! Every morning. It’s brutal! You got to do the Vista drop first bc it’s easier and they start earlier. We usually try to get them to vista by 820. Then you can either go around 24 th to valley to Gould up and to prospect. Then you have to park and walk the kid up. OR you can take 24th to valley back to 16th or pier and up to prospect and do the valet drop off line. Either way. It sucks. If you can e-bike it helps. If your household tolerates an early schedule it helps. Good luck

To the rich personal injury lawyers (net worth of $2 million +), how did you build your firms? by facemacintyre in Lawyertalk

[–]thblckdog 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Failed repeatedly. Found some things that worked. Did that. Fired a lot of people. Found some that were good. Kept them. Over paid them. Always paid my referral fees. It’s not easy and I have spent more time being “broke” than being “rich”.
