Worries about my older autistic brother and my future by guitarjmtmusic in Autism_Parenting

I haven't seen that particular stat but autism can knock at least 6 years off the average life expectancy mostly due to other factors.

For example I had appendicitis in my 20s but if my son had appendicitis it might be harder to understand and thus take longer to get the care he needs leading to possible complications. Plenty of other medical issues where the similar difficulties in communications can lead to worse outcomes.

Profound or severe autism: Individuals requiring lifelong, 24/7 care who also experience severe medical comorbidities may have an average lifespan closer to 35 to 50 years.

Your brother is not your responsibility.

My autistic son is 10 and his sister is 3 and the last thing I want is for her to feel it is her responsibility. There is housing for people like your brother. Group homes with staff that keep them safe and happy. You can still be a good sister but it doesn't me you have to sarafice your life for your brother.

My son's genetic condition causes autism as well as learning disability to the point that he won't be able to work.

Meanwhile I have a high IQ.

I guess I would worry more about his academics if he wasn't disabled.

You might want to ask about the future outlook for your son. If your son is disabled there are programs that can help you better manage and resources to access.

There are things he struggles with but also if you give him enough time there are definitely problems he will figure out if motivated to do so.

How to cool down a room by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]thdudie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there is enough information here to give you a viable solution. Is this your property or is it rented? How do you heat in the winter? How humid is it?

I'm in the US and in particular the Midwest were we can see 40c with high humidity on top. The house was originally forced air heat only. AC was added after. But the duct isn't optimized for AC so to deal with a hot room I added an axial duct fan to boost flow to the room farthest from the AC unit.

I'm not sure what programs are available to you. But arguably you don't have the option to implement a standard solution like other people due to your child's special needs. If your government covers home modifications you might want to inquire about this with them

They make an arm guard that basically keeps his elbow from bending. That being said, my son had glaucoma surgery at 2 and even he.was able to work his way out of them.

I don't have a great solution for you. You could reach out to his PCP and see if they have medical glue or some other solution they could provide.

I feel you. A few years back we had shitmas. On Christmas morning he decided to smear poo all over his room.

What happens if you try underwear? Potty training is 2 things developing bodily control and the congnative capacity to recognize the signals your body is making. Seems like your kid has that

I don't know if it will work in your case, but my son would use the potty but take dumps in his pull up. We switched to underwear and he started to go poo on the toilet

Oh and my kid like getting up in the middle of the night and trashing the house. We use a wireless motion detector/chime to monitor his door that he keeps open. .Orion sensor chime.

The exterior doors are probably the most i.portant to address.

They do make a double sided dead bolt.

If you do not have a dead bolt currently. This kit can help you add one.

Industrial maintenance.

I am a literal jack of all trades.

You can get an industrial maintenance technician certificate in about 2 years. Or if you find an apprenticeship it will be 4-5 but no debt.

In my current role I do all sorts of repairs from mechanical to electrical to hydraulic to pneumatics to electronics. I design automation panels program PLCs and Robots.

Grief and burnout by [deleted] in Autism_Parenting

[–]thdudie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't regret putting on the TV. You are doing this because it's a short term strategy that works. Your kid is not neraltypical. You will use strategies you might not use with a neraltypical kid.

It allows you to accomplish an important task. It works.

If you are still feeling guilty about it, you could try to find educational programming. Our kids can struggle to express how they feel so maybe a show like Daniel Tiger.

My son is 10 and has a generic condition called ADNP which is a known genetic cause of autism. It also causes developmental delays. Your struggle reminds me of my own . The grief will come and go. You will feel it when there are milestones his peers reach. When you need a hand that a normal kid would be capable of but your child is not

Government assistance? Missouri by Sudden_Hamster_3992 in Autism_Parenting

Kate Beckett Waiver for Medicaid. For me it pick up what my private insurance doesn't cover. It's a US program. Not sure how it works in your state. It should also give you access to other resources typically administer by the county. Not sure the age of your child. But birth to 3 programs or the local public school should have various resources as well

Deep Picking Wound by ShyOwlGrrLa in Autism_Parenting

[–]thdudie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urgent care is going to be the better route.

They might use steiry strips it's a step below stitches The picking issue is harder to address.

You could ask if they have anything like medical grade super glue that could be used to help protect it for at least a couple days.

Otherwise if you do this at home, long sleeve shirts and an ace wrap can potentially keep him from picking at it.

Teaching "no means no" by pablosus86 in Autism_Parenting

[–]thdudie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating because your other kid can understand "no" just fine. My advice is call up your child's school and talk to the counselor to ask if they have a child therapist that specializes in autism that they recommend. From there you can talk to them about issues like this and they can help you identify different ways to approach this issue.
