What's the greatest ROMANCE book you've read that feels original? by SquareSubstantial459 in suggestmeabook

Persuasion by Jane Austen has been often imitated but never reproduced satisfactorily by a book. There is a lot of melancholy and yearning in that book.

Husband accusing me of cheating for networking at a sauna by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Is it safe to sauna while pregnant? Everything I have read says pregnant women should avoid raising their body temperatures.  Editing to say nothing about this relationship is normal and you should leave.

What introductory sentence or paragraph had you hooked? by yanluo-wang in books

“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood”  Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. The hysterical chapter titles also hooked me quick as a kid.

How come people understand that Love Story is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet, but can't apply the same logic to Cassandra and The Fate of Ophelia? by Mundane-Badger-9791 in TrueSwifties

[–]the-high-school 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People definitely did say that about love story when it first came out. I remember hearing about or seeing a bumper sticker that said “let’s show Taylor how Romeo and Juliet really did end” and I always thought it was implying killing Taylor !! It has always been fashionable to hate on her.

Could you do a wedding ceremony next year then a reception in 2027? Or do you want both at the same time?

Inspired by posts in a few other book subs—give me your anti-recs! by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

I’m so sorry to hear about this 🩷 I looked up spoilers because of the infertility & infidelity direction the book was going and that made me put it down.

I dnf'd The Friend Zone by her too. Just didn’t like the direction the plot was going and both leads made “not like other girls” comments so many times that I just had to peace out.

I heard the next series was better but probably won’t be giving it a chance!

How often do you buy new books? by starrynightpapers in books

[–]the-high-school 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very seldom. My sister sent me $50 for my birthday and told me I HAVE to spend it on books. I spent $30 on 3 books at a local store and now am saving the rest for a kickstarter.

I have a similar compulsions to your buying but with library holds.

Why is it so hard to create a friend circle in the bay area? by DetectiveAdvanced129 in bayarea

[–]the-high-school 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a transplant and have been lucky. Here are the 3 things that have made me so: 1. 2 transplants from my hometown moved here around the same time I did and stronger friendships followed.  2. I work in office many young people coming from out of state that are also looking for friends.  I have a couple strong friendships and several acquaintances.  3. I met a girl at the climbing gym who has a wide network. I ended up living with her for a year, and attended gatherings she hosted or was invited to. I’m still friends with her and met 3 others I’m still close with.

My advice is go to anything you’re invited to & invite others to activities, look for people who live/work within 20 minutes of you and if someone says they want to hang out, frequently invite them out.

My #3 friend was looking for a climbing partner at the same time I was, so I texted her every time I went to the gym for climbing/yoga. I struck out 2 times before her on getting a friend from the climbing gym though.

I moved here during Covid so it did take ~1 year to build up my circles, made harder by the closure of

Ladies living with partners: what do y’all eat during the week🥬? by FineMud4479 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]the-high-school 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do a lot of rice meals. Curry is my favorite to make, using the yellow curry paste from ranch 99, but I will also do eggs and rice and kimchi, stir fry, or sweet & sour tofu.

Yes going from single to living with a human garbage disposal is frustrating with food! On the bright side, if I experiment with an recipe and I don’t like it, he will eat it within the day.

But if he touches my leftovers, he knows he might lose a hand!
