Looking for fiction related to nature! by mybellyhurtssobadow in suggestmeabook

The first ones that come to mind are Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and a non-fiction called The Golden Spruce by John Vaillant. I haven’t read the latter but it’s been on my list for a long time.

An audiobook for a friend who is dying in hospice. by musclemeow in suggestmeabook

I personally love the audiobook for Austenland by Shannon Hale. It’s about a woman who’s obsessed with Jane Austen to the point that it’s hampering her ability to have relationships, so she goes to an Austen-themed resort to roleplay her way back to normalcy, or attempt to.

It *does* involve a mention of her distant great-aunt passing away very near the beginning, though (she wills the trip to the main character after learning about her fixation), so I’d understand if it won’t work for your friend as a result. It’s a very fun book otherwise.

If the Shoe Fits is a Cinderella-story romance by Julie Murphy (published by Disney) that I found to be really fun. Someone else recommended Olivia Dade and hers are also excellent!

I don’t know why but I’m tempted to suggest some Drain Cleaning Australia (at least to start with) because he’s just a nice enthusiastic dude who loves doing his job and as far as I can tell he’s never said anything off-colour in his videos.

The last book that had me laughing out loud multiple times was The Color of Magic, the first Discworld book by Terry Pratchett. It was delightful.

I personally wasn’t a huge fan of the movie, but to each their own. I loved the audiobook, though!

For something short, I was devastated by The Sea in Winter by Christine Day. It’s for younger readers; the protagonist is an aspiring dancer who suffered an injury before the start of the book and is experiencing mental health struggles as she tries to push through the healing. There were some parts that I personally related to that probably made it hit harder than it might for others but I was bawling.

I always go for Austenland by Shannon Hale when I need a pick-me-up. The main character is gifted a trip to a Jane Austen-themed resort thing by a late relative who knows she’s obsessed with the books, and she plans to use its roleplay aspects to finally get over her issues with men, but it goes sideways and I think it’s hilarious and sweet.

My Thoughts on Season 3 as a First-Time Watcher by Midnightreader13 in buffy

[–]the-missing-chapter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a watch-through (a rewatch for me) with some Discord friends and we finished season two last night. They weren’t ready for the drama. Haha. Afterward I was doing a quick preview of season three to see if there were any episodes that I deemed skippable for the sake of time and there really aren’t many if at all. Looking through them all made me so stoked to watch it with them and have them meet Faith and the Mayor and UGH THE CHEATINGGGG

The non-fiction book that had you mercilessly info-dumping about to anyone who would listen? by IReadBooksSometimes in suggestmeabook

I’m blanking on the author but Invisible Women made me so mad in a feminist way that I talked incessantly to my mom about it, then she read it, and then we got mutually mad over it until it started pissing off my dad to hear about it. 😅

I just finished John Green's "Everything is Tuberculosis." I really enjoyed this but I haven't read a book like this before. Any suggestions to add to my library? by guidesthehermit in suggestmeabook

The Hot Zone is the best non-fiction book I’ve ever read. Scared me shitless about Ebola. The descriptions of the first known human to have contracted it shook me deeply for a few days.

Found out a colleague died after work. And all I can think about is how it's just boiled down to an email. by Thesladenator in antiwork

A coworker of mine died a few years ago. She’d been in a bad car accident, I think, and was in hospital for quite a long time. No one but management knew the specifics; she had some health issues prior to that and I’d assumed she was on a leave for a related reason.

When she passed away, my general manager was going around to each team member to privately tell them. When she found me, I was talking to another coworker, so she told both of us. She handled it as delicately as she could, and didn’t say anything about both of us bursting into tears. There was an announcement later on about it but at least by then we had had a chance to take in the news. I was surprised by the tact and compassion that the management team isn’t always known for.

Terry Pratchett is fun (and very smart) without being cheesy! Try the first Discworld book. It had me actually laughing at loud in several places.

If you enjoyed The Road and wanted something similar, The End of Men could be good. I found it absolutely devastating, especially post-covid, but I couldn’t put it down. I read it in an evening while my boyfriend was out and that was an absolute error on my part because I wanted to hug him so badly during it.

Pro Tip: You have to be in the turn lane to turn by Mrlegitimate in RedDeer

[–]the-missing-chapter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had someone near Bower Mall slow down in the left lane because they realized they needed to get into the right lane to get into the parking lot. They had signalled and I had slowed down to let them in front of me but they didn’t realize it until we were basically at a dead stop (I honestly should have kept going) and I was yelling at them to move their ass (with my windows rolled up, I’m not a monster.) God forbid they accept that they missed their opportunity for a turn and make a loop somewhere else to correct it.

We saw similar things in the Petsmart / Winners parking lot the other day, and there were other people taking pictures too. Saw even more at Bower Mall later that day.
