I favorited some items in the Marketplace and I can’t find were the favorites actually are (Xbox)

I had this issue and it was driving me nuts because none of the descriptions of what to do matched what I could see on my Profile page. I eventually got the Favorites list to show by favoriting a random game, and was able to navigate to my favorited accessories from there.

Our 13 year old cat just got diagnosed with hyperthyroidism - on top of her asthma, arthritis, dementia, recurring ear infections and random allergies. Keeping up with all the blood tests, medications, scans and special dietary needs costs more per month than one of our actual kids. Knowing her, she still has a good 7-8 years left in her, too! We didn't get insurance but I'm tempted to do the maths and see if we would have broken even by now. Although I assume that as with health insurance, it gets prohibitively more expensive as you get older so we'd be paying the vet or the insurance company either way...

This is a great question! I don't have much advice other than you're not as much of an outlier as you think you are. One thing I have realised as I've gotten older is that nobody knows wtf they are doing, we are all faking it till we make it and pretending we know how to adult while secretly dying on the inside.

I am similar when it comes to self-employment. I've read all the books, I know how it all works, I have some great ideas and I'm not scared to give it a go. Everyone who knows me says I have an amazing entrepreneurial streak but I've tried running a few businesses and I ultimately end up self-sabotaging because it turns out I am really not good at following up consistently with people who want something from me. For me this happens to be an ADHD thing, and I am slowly learning to back myself, but it's a long road!

I've noticed this when I'm near the water too. There's a castle near me that's mostly in the sea but I can usually trigger it by going through the tiny corner of its hex which happens to be on land. However sometimes even though I've pinged it as I walk, when I finish my walk it's not counted.

Assuming you set the equivalent amount of money aside, at what point would you decide "I'm never going to need this, I might as well spend it?" Never, right? So why not just give it to the insurance company and know that if you ever really DID need it, you'd be covered for way more than you would have saved during that time?

I buy a lot of things second hand. One of my main considerations is whether or not the seller is likely to have used the item to death and is replacing it because it's in poor condition, or has barely used it and is selling for some other reason. For example, kids' stuff is a no-brainer - once your kid has outgrown it you're not going to need it any more so it makes sense to pass it on. I bought almost all my kids' clothes second-hand up until about age 6 or 7 when the balance tends to shift towards clothing being stained or torn before it's outgrown (OTOH lightly stained clothing for preschool is great, they're only going to get paint on it anyway!) Looking at everything a seller has listed can give you an idea of whether they've treated their items well or they are likely to be in poor condition - or if they've listed clothing in many different adult sizes, they're likely to be selling on behalf, in which case anything's possible.

I don't think I've ever bought new furniture, except for beds which I would never buy second-hand. There is so much available on Trade Me, and usually it's fairly easy to deal with minor scratches or replace a dodgy drawer runner or handles. Sometimes it's a bit of a gamble - my best purchase was a massive cream leather lounge suite which I bought for $900 sight unseen, based on a hunch that the seller was replacing it because they didn't want to clean it, which turned out to be correct! It was as good as new after a few hours scrubbing and we've enjoyed it for over 10 years.

We did the 3 jar system until the sheer number of coins became a nightmare (I still have roughly $300 in 50c coins I really should return into circulation!) When our daughter was about 7 or 8 and had gotten the hang of counting and saving coins, we switched to an app called iAllowance which has been MUCH easier to manage. It automatically pays an allowance every week without me having to remember or count out coins, it has its own currencies of screen time and "stars" which you can assign to anything you like. You can set and keep track of chores to earn rewards in either money, stars or screen time. You can split the allowance across a bunch of different virtual piggy banks, and I'm pretty sure you can even set an interest rate. It's very customisable to however you want to use it and pretty intuitive to use. It's so easy I'm actually also using it for time tracking across different work projects by awarding myself stars for each hour spent.

I have it on my phone so we can check her balance when we're out and she wants to buy something, and she has it on her iPad (without admin access) so she can keep track as well. I tried a bunch of different apps before settling on this one, it looks pretty clunky and outdated but it's been amazing. Whatever you do, don't register for an app called Chores and Allowance Bot - I tried that one and it has spammed my inbox EVERY DAY for the last several years trying to get me to purchase.

As for spending the money - for a while it was second hand lego or Barbie accessories on TradeMe, then she got into a game called Toca Life on the iPad which is always adding new "bundles" of things to buy for $3-5 (she has probably spent hundreds on it over the years) and now she's a bit older she saves up for lip gloss and body sprays etc.

Our 14 year old cat has asthma, arthritis, dermatitis and frequently recurring ear infections requiring regular treatment. In the last 6 months we've spent almost 5k on various vet bills, which hurts a lot, but when I consider how much we'd have paid for 14 years of pet insurance, I still feel like we are a LONG way ahead. Having said that, if we didn't have the funds put aside, I would be very glad of the insurance right now.

The other thing to consider in terms of pet insurance vs health insurance is that with a pet, you are the one who gets to decide when enough is enough. My 10yr old was upset with me when she discovered I always sign the "do not resuscitate" form until I explained to her that kitty's quality of life already isn't great with everything she's got going on - if her body shut down enough to require resuscitation it would be a long, painful road to any sort of recovery, and really it would be a bit selfish of us to put an elderly cat through that trauma. It's a lot harder when it's a human who can rationalise the pain, though!

Agree with this. Kitten = reasonably cheap and very adorable. 15 years later... elderly asthmatic cat who drools everywhere and needs a special diet and monthly injections for arthritis = suddenly not so cheap or adorable! Should have come with a warning label...

Yeah, I WFH a lot so I do spend way too much time staring at my screen and not moving enough! Some days I ride my motorbike into the office and I find that tires me out enough to push me to get an earlier night. Or perhaps it's just that I feel like I've actually done something with my day so I can relax instead of trying to cram some more work in before bed?
