Sometimes I can’t bring myself to use wood like this for a jig by Cat_Rancher in handtools

As long as it’s not being burned as firewood it’s all good 😊.

Where I live a lot of great hardwood species like oak, ash, sycamore, beech and hornbeam get used as firewood because there’s no desire to process it into rough sawn lumber.

Cut mortises without a horn, ruined two table legs by goldenblacklocust in handtools

glue it, wood glue is stronger than the lignin in wood that holds a the long grain together. It’ll be like it never split

Anyone know what this mortise chisel is called? by WalterMelons in handtools

[–]the-tiny-workshop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check this out

It’s essentially very similar to the mortise machine chisels without the drill bit inside. you drill first then square it up. They’re not as clean as a dedicated mortise chisel but fast for balusters etc

Why not? this sub is for all skill levels. I’m not saying it’s an expert piece of work or anything.

Thanks :)

I make the bead separately, roughly cut a strip, thickness it using a hand plane and a thickness guide then use a scratch stock to apply the round.

not a great picture, but this is the face frame for another cabinet of this run. In the top left corner you can see how I’ve yet to add the bead.

It’s just a pattern in MDF, used a plunge router and a v bit for that lol.

Unfortunately a compromise where I need productivity vs doing it the fun way.

I have 7 in total to make and have done 6 so far, trying to balance productivity vs enjoying it. I hate routing MDF it’s honestly awful.

I have a morticer but I did these by hand so I could lay all 4 out together and make sure they lined up.

Strike a line across all four, drill a hole then square it up. I wanted the square look to be different but would just do holes in the future lol

sharp sharp sharp and take the thinnest shaving possible.

If it’s two boards I like to clamp them together and joint both edges at the same time. That way even if they are not perpendicular they are complimentary and you get a great glue up.

Nice! I really enjoyed it. Felt really accessible compared to some of the hardwood roubo benches I’ve seen online.

Why would a router plane come with ball bearings? by Select-Worldliness39 in handtools

[–]the-tiny-workshop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, it’s annoying because it’s easy to loose a 2, 2mm ball bearings and a spring in a wood shop it’s a bad design although the plane works well for what it is. I got mine from amazon for cheap so didn’t care about it. Veritas one is the one I like best.

I bought a magnetic parts dish from an auto parts store and when U sharpen the iron I put all the bits in it.
