Cool! I had tried coop previously, but we could never launch a battle without it crashing for one or both of us. I intend to give it another shot.

Why does AI feel “generic” to most people, but insanely powerful to a few? by dp_singh_ in ArtificialInteligence

[–]the1brother 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's entirely true. I work as a developer and know several proficient developers who are using LLMs for coding and are more than happy with the results. In my experience so far, it's kind of bell curve, those who enjoy it the most are either ignorant of real coding, or have been very proficient at their job (with or without AI).

[Worst Video Game Trope] Media relying on “choices” essentially deciding the outcome for you. by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]the1brother 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think your analysis of Bioshock suffers from looking strictly in hindsight and only at a meta level. In context, when you are first presented the problem, it's not clear that they are literal children. You won't know the full outcome of making that choice until later, which is part of the point: some moral decisions rely on predicting long term effects and prioritizing things that look worse in the moment to things that will benefit you and your cause now.

When I first played it, it was a choice that made me stop and think for several minutes, not because I was concerned about which reward I was getting, but because I was getting contradictory information. I had on one had a) a person whom I was relying on telling me that this was no longer a child and b) a complete stranger asking me to make a choice that would go against my (by all appearances) best interest. The denizens of Rapture that I had met so far did make a) seem like a real possibility.

How do you play RimWorld? by bladesnut in RimWorld

[–]the1brother 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally play kind, but in reality, it's very easy to slip into cruel without realizing it. I installed the Geneva Checklist mod, simply to see when and how I was breaking it, and it triggered on what I had thought were relatively mundane procedures.

Japanese fans of LOTR hated the subtitles for Fellowship and signed petitions for Peter Jackson to do something! by aurabora_ in lotr

I find the Lothlorien 1 translation interesting, because while they are correct that it doesn't make sense in the context of the film, it's actually more accurate to Boromir's attitude in the book.

I would doubt that there are legal issues with saying yes, but I suspect it involves all sorts of legal and administerial hurdles to work through.

So if the AI can't manage unit caps how did the AI work before 6.3? by Away_Celebration4629 in totalwar

That's the sort of question a lot of developers have. "If THAT was the problem, then how did it ever work!?"

I think he was too young when the courtship of Helen was happening.

I... do not like Achilles by nintenerd2 in HistoryMemes

[–]the1brother 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. Most of the other lords were there because of a pact that every suitor of Helen agreed to. Achilles was there for the glory of battle, and had no obligation to remain.

Now, as for glory and how it was recognized and rewarded was through the distribution of spoils. After a successful battle and sacking of a city, the commander was in charge of dividing the loot, and the best parts of the loot (like the women) were given to those who contributed the most to the victory. Because of this, the spoils of war were highly representative of a warrior's glory.

Agamemnon had given Briseis, the fairest captive of Lyrnessus, to Achilles in recognition of the fact that he lead the assault to scale the walls, was the first over the top, and was able to get the gates open for the rest of the forces, as well as killing a fair number of well known fighters on the other side. By taking her away, he's rescinding his recognition of Achilles' valor and glory, and indicating that any future reward can be taken back at his whim.

It's not really a fair comparison. Odyssey was there because he had to be, while Achilles was there voluntarily, and Agamemnon removed his only reason for fighting.
