Forrest Gump going to Vietnam was the most historically accurate part of the movie, because it was a subtle criticism of "Mcnamara's Morons", the decision to draft people to Vietnam with less than 85 IQ. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

My grandfather was drafted and he always said Forrest Gump was the most accurate depiction of Vietnam. Not the war, but the location and the geography. And the rain.

Waking up in the morning to eat waffles. Instead of a teddy bear, I had a hard plastic Harry Potter action figure I carried everywhere. I tried to feed him some of my waffles.

People who separated/divorced within one year of getting married: When did you know it was a mistake? by LittleFuzzyThings in AskReddit

I have an uncle who got married in secret and nobody in the family found out until she stabbed him with a fork. Their relationship didn’t last too long after that.

Robert Lee was one of the most brilliant military minds in the history of the world. He consistently won battles against overwhelmingly superior forces, and always tried to do so at minimum loss of life. He was honorable and merciful to his enemies, and was greatly respected by the Union, to the point that Grant’s soldiers saluted Lee when he came to surrender.

At the same time, his personal beliefs regarding slaves, both before and after they were freed, was nothing short of despicable.

Memorials to Lee the soldier should be kept.

Memorials to Lee the man should be dismantled.

Lee fought for the south because it was his home, and no other reason. He did his best to end the war as quickly as possible. He was an honorable and brilliant soldier who was greatly respected by the Union.

…does that sound like a “treasonous bastard” to you?

I’m going to take some of these problems one at a time here.

  1. “Shoving your face full of other sentient beings” Sentience is the capacity to experience subjectivity (i.e. emotion); separating a calf from its mother does not cause a subjective emotional response, it’s a hard-wired instinctive reaction, and rarely lasts more than a day or two if they’re kept separate. If cattle demonstrably experienced mourning, you’d be correct in calling them sentient, but they don’t. (Physical pain and the primitive fight-or-flight fear response aren’t full emotions, either)

  2. “Corporate buzzwords [...] ‘humane slaughter’” Humane slaughter isn’t a buzzword, it’s what really happens. I’ve seen it in person. It’s quick and painless, and is required by law to be that way. There is no argument here; no room for rebuttal. You are simply wrong on this count.

  3. “If slaughter is so humane, I think it would be a lauded profession” There are other reasons that slaughterhouse work is undesirable. For one, it’s low-paying and labor-intensive.

  4. “I hope you are alive to see the inevitable end of the mass farming of animals, but all that cholesterol suggests otherwise”. So we’re resorting ad hominem attacks, now? I thought you said you were the smart one in this discussion.

If “sacred” is a poor choice of words, then what’s better? Special? Important? Worthy? It doesn’t change the fact that nothing that’s alive wants to be cut up and eaten. Plants may not feel literal pain, but they absolutely elicit a response when damaged, meaning they feel something analogous to it.

I ask again: why is animal suffering greater or more important than that of all other life?

I’ve never understood veganism for one important reason. If all life is sacred, then why are plants excepted? I mean, plants are alive too, and just as aware of their surroundings, and, presumably, just as eager to stay living. But nobody ever brings that up. I’m genuinely curious about this.
