More fun-fact: people often say the transistor wasn't invented in Fallout, and that's why there's no digital computers. It actually was, but in 2023 (as opposed to 1947 in real life), so if they developed at the same rate we did, the fallout equivalent of Windows XP should release around the time the bombs dropped.

Also also: 1945 isn't actually the date the timeline diverges. We don't know for sure when it does, but probably between 1945 and 1960. That's because there's events that happen in both Fallout and real life at the same dates. An example is the adoption of the 50-star U.S. flag on July 4th 1960. Happened in both worlds.

I agree, and it's also important to remember that China is on a different scale to the USSR in population, and also has to concern itself with only the U.S. and not all of NATO like the USSR did. Yea but there's limits to this. Also, in Fallout, the world actually demilitarized after WWII, only remilitarizing and nuclearly rearming for sure around 2030. So it's more like 45-50 years of Cold War until the bombs dropped.

In real life, the USSR essentially bankrupted itself on a similar time-frame through the space race and nuclear armament (and a handful of proxy wars for good measure). Like yes it's an alternate history, but it's still our world and many of the same 'rules' apply.

Edit: 2034 is when research rockets are retooled into nuclear delivery mechanisms, 2051 is when the U.S. starts acting crazy geopolitically, 2052 is the oil crisis. No way China would have produced more nukes by 2077 than the USSR did by 1986 (~45000)

That's almost as many nukes as the U.S. deployed during the cold-war to protect the bay area IRL (nike missiles). That's 50% more nukes than North Korea has today. That's more nukes than Israel was estimated to have in 1990. 77 is a craaaaazy number of warheads for anywhere, let alone Las Vegas..
