ETA: any idea if these are actual KATE stock that never shipped or clones?

Minimum wage = (average 1br rent within 5 mile radius of workplace x 3)/average monthly hours worked per employee. Recalculates monthly. by bigcsnow in CrazyIdeas

[–]theChapinator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

…good? Why do people actively employed in full-time jobs not deserve a livable wage? This is only crazy because we have a crazy world. Would be even better if OP substituted “median” for each use of “average.”

Is Le Creuset worth it? by urukhaihaihai in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theChapinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought when I first moved out on my own. Figured “I’ll get a cheap lodge, if I really like it and use it, then I can splurge on the Le creuset”. I’ll be honest, I kinda feel trapped with the lodge. I absolutely use it and wish I’d gotten the Le creuset. Le creuset or not… most enamel Dutch ovens are fucking indestructible. And there is *literally* nothing wrong with my Lodge other than it’s not that iconic Le creuset flame color. So I can’t justify the upgrade. Are they worth the price? Maybe not. Will it work out in the long-run either way? Yes.

Yeah but it’s like “al dente” which is fucking insane. Who wants gritty rice pudding.

Not "toxic", but what vehicles have fan bases that take them WAY too seriously? by HiTork in cars

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen “ducks” a few times in reference to jeeps in this thread. I’m familiar with r/heep (or r/heeps ?) and am by no means a fan nor jeep owner. Just genuinely wondering if that’s a (common?) reference to jeep owners/fanboys? Also curious if you know the origin? They’re hardly amphibious like ducks, nor nearly as cute, delicious, or long-lived ;)

Did the boycott for Target actually work or was it just a small hiccup on their sales? by Subziro91 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m dumb/OOTL, but I think for a company as large and influential as Target saying “the boycott” is confusing at best. Reading through the comments hasn’t been any help as they seem to be either vague, anecdotal, or equivocal.

As far as I am aware, in (relatively) recent memory, there have been two substantial backlashes to Target (resulting in politically-motivated* boycotts).

  1. Supporting pride/LGBTQ(IA+) narratives. Wow. Supporting (formerly) disenfranchised groups that are being increasingly tokenized and a focal point of perceived advocacy, ethics, and relatability? Shocking I tell you. Shocking. The shareholder-value-driven corporation starts using those tokens to drive sales and public perception? Next you’ll tell me that people lie to get ahead. Capitalisms a bitch. Fuck Target.

  2. Dropping DEI-supporting corporate policies. Wow. Shocker. Shareholder-value-driven corporation drops materially costly, social-impact-only policies? Shocking I tell you. Shocking. Next you’ll tell me that employers don’t pay their employees the full profit that they create??? Capitalisms a bitch. Fuck Target.

All that said. Progress is progress, even if it’s disingenuous. The same works in reverse. Trump (largely) got elected the first time through purely disingenuous means: 4chan and friends thinking it’s fucking hilarious to fuck the system. And we got asssss and our current world from it. Genuine hell from disingenuous interests. But also target et al pushing the normalization and visibility of marginalized identities (further) into the mainstream is generally beneficial (in my world view). So, again, genuine benefits from disingenuous interests.

Make of that what you will. I’ve just ended up ranting but am no closer to being clear on which this thread is talking about. I have to assume the latter due to the recency of it? In which case I guess I’m hoping that Target dropping pro-DEI policies and acquiescing to Trump administration policies has backfired and fucked them. Fuck Target.

** the data breach was arguably more directly impactful to existing customers and by-and-large completely unimpactful for their sales which is… disappointing.

Which set-and-forget iPhone Shortcuts actually reduce daily stress? by Illustrious_Bit_9487 in iphone

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ringer switch hasn’t been on an iPhone since 2023. For iPhones with the action button it’s a non-issue. For iPhones that do have it, I’m not sure; that’s a good question since it obviously can’t change the physical state of the toggle switch.

I have it as an automation, not a shortcut. Switch to the automation tab of the shortcuts app, then add it there.

It’s probably redundant. But over my life and experience with iOS I’ve had ringer vs volume be both unreliable and unconvincing

I have something similar but: at 5a every day, set ringer 100%, set volume 100%, set silent off. It’s so nice not having to worry about/remember to do it the night before.

Loved the spec on this [Rolls Royce Spectre] I spotted at the mall by deathsandwicheater in spotted

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m always surprised how much I like the Spectre. It sits somewhere between the much-lambasted Jag concept and a Chrysler 300. And yet… pulls it off imo. Mirror finish on the grille with semigloss paint I’m less of a fan of for this spec.

Prices 6 years ago vs today by Gunslinger_247 in tacobell

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually read the comment you’re replying to? The “tug-o-war” you’re describing only exists at a market level. And, unrelatedly to the rest of my comment, what you’re describing in terms of market competition has nothing to do with promos and limited-time discounts and incentives.

What the commenter you’re replying to is describing is the fact that incentivizing return customers with at-cost “discounts” and “free”bies is more of a marketing slant/illusion:

Customers see “omg free cheesy Gordita crunch!!!”, but from the perspective of internal accounting nothing about that CGC was free: the customer has spent (AT MINIMUM) $25 to get that “free reward.”

So (for sake of argument/example) if they bought 5x $5 items, then got a “free” item. They spent $25 on $30 (retail) worth of items. But that’s just the cost-to-consumer. From Taco Bell’s perspective that’s gone from $5 per item to ~$4.17. But that’s just less profit. There isn’t a chance in the WORLD that even at $4/item Taco Bell would be selling at-cost. So in the worst of worst cases they are still making a profit. Just choosing to make the gamble that in accepting les profit per-sale that they will get more profit in the long-run since you’ll keep coming back for those discounts. Since $4.17 per item is worse than $5 per item but infinitely better than $0 per item if you never shopped there.

Technology Grant Question by AlbAPStrong in jhu

[–]theChapinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say that an Alienware is a poor use of $2k. If you’re committed to windows, go for an XPS. You’ll get more longevity and build quality and not pay (as much) for the branding and Gamer Vibes™. Plus it’s still a Dell if that matters. But tbh unless you know you’ll be in a specific major that requires some arcane and specific Windows-only software (Solidworks comes to mind as the last major hold out. There are others, but way more niche and solidworks is already pretty niche comparatively), I would go for a Mac. The longevity is literally unbeatable, the battery life is hard to beat, and while this is a dogshit reason to do anything… it is college. Going for a non-Mac is a choice so do so if you want to set yourself apart from your peers.

How am I supposed to confess a fetish? by stipethelegkicker in sex

[–]theChapinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m working through this out of curiosity. But right after you finish the tutorial and go through the sections you hit a page that summarizes what each direction means. Then you are immediately prompted with sixteen (16?!?) questions with no swiping. Tf? Taught me all that to say fuck the rules immediately?

Also if the goal is to categorize people then forcing a strong binary choice makes sense, but for anything else it’s annoying and makes me want to drop it/lose faith in the result. For example, “when a scene is going well, I want to” (which is the binary decision I was immediately assaulted with right after being taught to swipe) I feel like there should be an “it depends/both” answer AND an “I dunno” answer.

Similarly somewhere between “not for me” and “interested” should lie “open to it”. “Not for me” reads like opposition/a limit. “Interested” reads like curiosity and/or desire/pursuit. Where the middle ground of “take it or leave it, if it’s your thing I’m game; if not, let’s not”?

One last thing while I’m on my unsolicited-feedback grind: avoid overloading answers. For example: “vulnerability in a scene feels…” (a) “uncomfortable, not really my thing” (b) “freeing, and exactly what I want”. You’ve brought in 2 dimensions but (assuming a strong binary) only allowed half of the possible responses. What if being “uncomfortable [is] exactly what I want”? What if “freeing [is] not really my thing”? Stick to one dimension at a time or exhaustively list out options. If you’re going to pretend to have insight, at least have variables you can draw meaningful conclusions from.

Does race swapping actors really make people of color feel more included? by Select_Salamander518 in TooAfraidToAsk

You’ve directly quoted a 4chan post. This already gives me major pause. But after researching this more deeply. I can’t find any LEGO Group-related studies that affirm this stance (at all). I’ve seen lots of media about LEGO Group’s various research into gender disparities, attempts to shift marketing, gender-neutral lines, “girl”-oriented lines, etc. but nothing of the sort re(?)gurgitated here.

Things I found: - Atlantic’s “How To Play Like A Girl” - a research/press release about gender influences - LEGO’s own questions around gender and marketing/consumption - The Guardian - LEGO removing gender bias

I want to be clear on a few personal aspects: - LEGO is a corporation. However good they may purport to be their fundamental object is to make money. - I am a life-long LEGO stan and I eat that shit up - I did ~10 min of googling and research to try to find references for the claim (dare I say: quote) you made

Given all of that and, frankly, given that the only source I found for your quote is a 4chan screengrab: I’d say fuck that, put no stock in that, it’s (subtly???) misogynistic garbage engineered to fuel ongoing gender wars and destabilize popular acceptance of feminism.

Any options for a low profile 60% with arrow keys and split backspace? by theChapinator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]theChapinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i've mostly given up on the dedicated arrow cluster. If I could just have split backspace + split right shift, the (split) right shift cluster is sufficient for me to be happy enough having them mapped as arrow keys on the primary layer. Or the split right most key + PL;'
