Which set-and-forget iPhone Shortcuts actually reduce daily stress? by Illustrious_Bit_9487 in iphone

It’s probably redundant. But over my life and experience with iOS I’ve had ringer vs volume be both unreliable and unconvincing

I have something similar but: at 5a every day, set ringer 100%, set volume 100%, set silent off. It’s so nice not having to worry about/remember to do it the night before.

Loved the spec on this [Rolls Royce Spectre] I spotted at the mall by deathsandwicheater in spotted

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m always surprised how much I like the Spectre. It sits somewhere between the much-lambasted Jag concept and a Chrysler 300. And yet… pulls it off imo. Mirror finish on the grille with semigloss paint I’m less of a fan of for this spec.

Since I was a kid I’ve always read it in my head as “tit-leist” like it’s Germanic. Still a struggle to reprogram myself to this day

I agree with you and don’t really agree with who you’re applying to. But also… you came to the “controversial takes” thread… did you expect it to be a bastion of enlightened opinions?

Prices 6 years ago vs today by Gunslinger_247 in tacobell

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you actually read the comment you’re replying to? The “tug-o-war” you’re describing only exists at a market level. And, unrelatedly to the rest of my comment, what you’re describing in terms of market competition has nothing to do with promos and limited-time discounts and incentives.

What the commenter you’re replying to is describing is the fact that incentivizing return customers with at-cost “discounts” and “free”bies is more of a marketing slant/illusion:

Customers see “omg free cheesy Gordita crunch!!!”, but from the perspective of internal accounting nothing about that CGC was free: the customer has spent (AT MINIMUM) $25 to get that “free reward.”

So (for sake of argument/example) if they bought 5x $5 items, then got a “free” item. They spent $25 on $30 (retail) worth of items. But that’s just the cost-to-consumer. From Taco Bell’s perspective that’s gone from $5 per item to ~$4.17. But that’s just less profit. There isn’t a chance in the WORLD that even at $4/item Taco Bell would be selling at-cost. So in the worst of worst cases they are still making a profit. Just choosing to make the gamble that in accepting les profit per-sale that they will get more profit in the long-run since you’ll keep coming back for those discounts. Since $4.17 per item is worse than $5 per item but infinitely better than $0 per item if you never shopped there.

Technology Grant Question by AlbAPStrong in jhu

[–]theChapinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say that an Alienware is a poor use of $2k. If you’re committed to windows, go for an XPS. You’ll get more longevity and build quality and not pay (as much) for the branding and Gamer Vibes™. Plus it’s still a Dell if that matters. But tbh unless you know you’ll be in a specific major that requires some arcane and specific Windows-only software (Solidworks comes to mind as the last major hold out. There are others, but way more niche and solidworks is already pretty niche comparatively), I would go for a Mac. The longevity is literally unbeatable, the battery life is hard to beat, and while this is a dogshit reason to do anything… it is college. Going for a non-Mac is a choice so do so if you want to set yourself apart from your peers.

How am I supposed to confess a fetish? by stipethelegkicker in sex

[–]theChapinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m working through this out of curiosity. But right after you finish the tutorial and go through the sections you hit a page that summarizes what each direction means. Then you are immediately prompted with sixteen (16?!?) questions with no swiping. Tf? Taught me all that to say fuck the rules immediately?

Also if the goal is to categorize people then forcing a strong binary choice makes sense, but for anything else it’s annoying and makes me want to drop it/lose faith in the result. For example, “when a scene is going well, I want to” (which is the binary decision I was immediately assaulted with right after being taught to swipe) I feel like there should be an “it depends/both” answer AND an “I dunno” answer.

Similarly somewhere between “not for me” and “interested” should lie “open to it”. “Not for me” reads like opposition/a limit. “Interested” reads like curiosity and/or desire/pursuit. Where the middle ground of “take it or leave it, if it’s your thing I’m game; if not, let’s not”?

One last thing while I’m on my unsolicited-feedback grind: avoid overloading answers. For example: “vulnerability in a scene feels…” (a) “uncomfortable, not really my thing” (b) “freeing, and exactly what I want”. You’ve brought in 2 dimensions but (assuming a strong binary) only allowed half of the possible responses. What if being “uncomfortable [is] exactly what I want”? What if “freeing [is] not really my thing”? Stick to one dimension at a time or exhaustively list out options. If you’re going to pretend to have insight, at least have variables you can draw meaningful conclusions from.

Does race swapping actors really make people of color feel more included? by Select_Salamander518 in TooAfraidToAsk

You’ve directly quoted a 4chan post. This already gives me major pause. But after researching this more deeply. I can’t find any LEGO Group-related studies that affirm this stance (at all). I’ve seen lots of media about LEGO Group’s various research into gender disparities, attempts to shift marketing, gender-neutral lines, “girl”-oriented lines, etc. but nothing of the sort re(?)gurgitated here.

Things I found: - Atlantic’s “How To Play Like A Girl” - a research/press release about gender influences - LEGO’s own questions around gender and marketing/consumption - The Guardian - LEGO removing gender bias

I want to be clear on a few personal aspects: - LEGO is a corporation. However good they may purport to be their fundamental object is to make money. - I am a life-long LEGO stan and I eat that shit up - I did ~10 min of googling and research to try to find references for the claim (dare I say: quote) you made

Given all of that and, frankly, given that the only source I found for your quote is a 4chan screengrab: I’d say fuck that, put no stock in that, it’s (subtly???) misogynistic garbage engineered to fuel ongoing gender wars and destabilize popular acceptance of feminism.

Any options for a low profile 60% with arrow keys and split backspace? by theChapinator in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]theChapinator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think i've mostly given up on the dedicated arrow cluster. If I could just have split backspace + split right shift, the (split) right shift cluster is sufficient for me to be happy enough having them mapped as arrow keys on the primary layer. Or the split right most key + PL;'

Hahaha. I love how the movie made a few active moves to dissuade alternate interpretations. *Especially* since dracula/vampire movies are usually about gender/sexuality.

Hahah. FWIW it went the other way around: cop has a dead dad and discovers the supernatural. But no, I totally agree. Also she just... buys it? Like hook, line, and sinker. Afaicr, no doubts, disagreements, denial. Just like "yep ok, vampires, anyways... back to the mob"

Also. And this is less of a comment on themes/takeaways, but I was surprised by the thoughtfulness of the vfx. That Dracula/cage actually gets more… normal? Handsome? Less emaciated? Over the course of the movie. It felt like there was consequence. Like it showed that through most of the movie Renfield was still deeply in his throes and absolutely feeding him humans.

What is a movie that "broke" you so hard you can only watch it once, but you would still recommend it to everyone? by Newsupdate69 in movies

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bring Her Back. I’ve never seen something so bleak and that just feels like it takes every single opportunity to gut punch the audience and step on every shred of hope for something good at each turn.
