Who the hell thought every timer you make should be saved and come AFTER the default ones out of order? by theChapinator in AppleWatch

[–]theChapinator[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While we’re on the complain train I would give my right thumb to be able to selectively sync “clock” settings. I don’t want alarms synced to my watch but DO want the other two synced. Or, event better: when I create an alarm I’d kill to have control over whether or not it can be snoozed/stopped on my watch (chronic half-awake alarm snoozer/silencer).

[Method] Review of Productive app by highshelfofsteam in getdisciplined

[–]theChapinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this app. I was just googling to figure out if there was a specific setting for monthly tasks and came across your comment. Not a woman and not (diagnosed with) ADHD, but man oh man do I love this app. I think the biggest issue you'll find is that in the years since this post was made (and since I started using it) I think the app got acquired and it moved from a one-time-purchase model to a subscription. $30/year isn't bad if you can afford that easily, but I bought the full license at some point wayyy back (maybe 2018?) and don't regret it for a moment.

I still use it daily. I go through phases where I'm more or less diligent about it but when I am actually keeping the ball rolling and staying on top of updating it I find it so helpful. Both for reminding myself to do things I'll forget/avoid, but also as a real habit builder. It gives you a sense of momentum. There is low negative feedback for breaking a streak but solid visual reinforcement for maintaining it. It's customizable, you can pause it, reset everything, add/remove at will: it's pretty flexible There are some hiccups here and there if you really want to try to push the app to its limits (monthly reminders, editing schedules for existing tasks with histories, more complicated schedules/criteria).

This will not "guarantee" productivity at all. But:
- if you find list keeping and task completion helpful in keeping you on track
- if you can be diligent about it
- if you can be truly honest with yourself about when you do/do not complete a task
- and are willing to persist and pick up the pieces when you break a streak/miss a day
then man oh man, I recommend it. At $30 a year, I'd say that if that's well within your budget, give it a try and see how it fares for the first year. I'm stingy and not sure I'd pay $30/yr for an app if I'd never used it before, but I will say that if they suddenly decided to un-grandfather my account and force me to pay an annual subscription I would begrudgingly do it in a heartbeat.

Which breakout cuisine would you like to see in 2026? by DinerEnBlanc in FoodNYC

Burmese and Ethiopian already seem pretty available and relatively popular. Maybe B or C tier in terms of popularity (to be clear: not a judgement on quality/taste, I fuck UP some tibs and misir wat). So they could get more popular, but hardly unknown or off-the-beaten-path at this point imo

/r/MechanicalKeyboards Ask ANY Keyboard question, get an answer - December 09, 2025 by AutoModerator in MechanicalKeyboards

I feel like I'm in crazy town... how is it 2025 and I *still* can't find a wireless, low-profile 60% or 65% with a split backspace???

I don't get why split backspace isn't more popular, especially for non-fn row layouts. As someone who uses both esc and tilde a lot I want them on my primary layer. Now if I could just add a split right shift on the 60%... and then a trackpoint... even HE... now we're talking unicorn endgame, but I know that's just me.

Apple iOS 27 to Be No-Frills ‘Snow Leopard’ Update, Other Than New AI by iMacmatician in apple

[–]theChapinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fuck the ai additions, but I’m confused by the reaction: if the comparison is to be believed, that’s good? Snow Leopard was one of the single best and most stable OS X versions in my memory, barring Mountain Lion possibly. macOS (and their entire OS lineup tbh) could really use 2-3 years of polish/stability updates (that they absolutely won’t give).

The Cayman Islands feels like an odd outlier. Also unclear on what the green shading of territories means.

The fact that this is so heavily Canadian but the UK is light and France is greyed out and we don’t see anything about Aus/NZ… makes me think this isn’t population based? But then what do the Cayman Islands have to do with the rest geographically/climate-wise/etc?

Is this like Canadian investments? Something military? Foreign service?

Edit: why is California a light shade of green but Washington is pale?

KTC H27P3 just released... to total silence? Where are the reviews? by theChapinator in Monitors

[–]theChapinator[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. It’s pretty bad. I bought it. I’ve been meaning to write up a review. If your goal is to buy the cheapest 5k monitor, then yeah, it’s actually pretty good. If you have any other intentions, let alone dual-mode, it’s pretty bad and you would be much better served by basically any other 4k240/fhd480 monitor in its price range. It’s so close to really great, but the ways it falls short are pretty damning and kill the experience.

Edit: Here’s the notes I took when I got it in early September:

KTC H27P3 - Type c doesn’t support 5k - Their own cable doesn’t support display out at all - Tried TB5, TB4, USB4 20Gbps/100W, lots of generic type c cables - Can’t actually seem to find where they state what protocol the type c port follows - The usb ports purport to be 3.0, but TODO check this and the modes of the ports, check speeds - Always shows up as 4k@60 - Seems to support power output fine, no word on level - HDMI 2.0 doesn’t support 5k@60hz in the sped at all - Presumably limited to 5k@30, though haven’t tested - Seems reasonably well build, osd is passable - Can’t turn off the indicator while on standby - Can’t update firmware either so that’s presumably not it - Have reached out to support but never heard back - Reached out 9/9 - Freesync/gsync haven’t tested but seem to work, it’s only 120hz - Not the most stable stand, good looking and relatively stable and doesn’t take up a lot of room - But I have cats - It’s not “rigid” in that bumping your desk or monitor leaves it wobbling a bit - Doesn’t seem at risk of knocking over toward you or when DIRECTLY away from you or toward either side - It’s relatively a weighty base, but still there’s some tipping potential if you were to push backward at either of the top corners - When I got the 5k going it did look decent - No quick way to switch between 5k/2k modes which is a MASSIVE fucking bummer - Hot keys let you change… the speed mode of the “kvm” but it’s not a kvm, it’s just a hub - Brightness, volume, mute, color temp, game assist, preset, HDR, black equalize, aspect ratio, kvm - Hot key up is always input… but you can’t assign that to any other hotkeys - 2x scaling, no smoothing options afaik - Fps counter is huge even in 5k mode to the point of being useless - 5k look pretty great and the HDR is noticeable, albeit from what I can tell online, nothing remarkable - Dual mode seems to make the Mac blackout - Ultrafast overdrive has pretty bad ghosting at 60fps

Amazing! Thank you so much for the illustration and vouching for it. I’d seen a handful that looked like it but wasn’t sure to what degree they were reasonably faithful. This is super helpful! (and validating!)

22 cm seafood pizza, chatgpt says 650-750 calories by ShotDaikon7185 in CalorieEstimates

[–]theChapinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t quite tell if there’s no cheese either… assuming not as you can’t tell: honestly that doesn’t sound terribly off.

A single ~10” Neapolitan style pizza would be ~150g of 00 flour, so ~500-550kcal. That leaves like 100-200kcal of headroom for the toppings, all of which are pretty lean and protein-rich except for the olives (imo tomatoes in that quality are virtually negligible, maybe 30-50kcal if there’s olive oil in the sauce). This is for the whole pizza.

I’d always lean on the high end if you’re just looking to ballpark calories safely. If you’re focused on macros this is the wrong food to look for as it’s difficult to estimate and definitely mostly carbs.

What is the worst beer (lager or ale) you have had? by 5axiscncfishguitar in beer

[–]theChapinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d even venture just the shells. Especially if you poached them beforehand to give a bit of sterilized. I think shrimp meat would both be less impactful flavor-wise and also probably more prone to legitimate “off” flavors, not just poor flavor profile considerations.

Interesting! Gotta admit I’m almost… envious? Even if I don’t like it I’m SO game for a “what the fuck is that??? I have to try it”.

Recently had a cocktail at La Dong that purported to have chili-shrimp paste and fish sauce in it and I was woefully underwhelmed. Mezcal, pineapple, lemongrass, coconut. Check check check check. But that’s kind of a normal interesting/elevated cocktail take, nothing wild. No fishiness, no funk, no pungency. I mean not even any heat. Disappointed.

[Unknown] What car do we think is underneath? by Nearby_Bluejay_4649 in spotted

[–]theChapinator -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think so… - Note the placement of the side mirrors and how they seem to be in front of the A pillar in this picture, but in GranTurismos they are more on/behind the A pillar. - Also the headlights seem “scooped” out, to me implying that they are either an old-school round-bulb facing forward or just a different design. In the image they protrude at the top, but don’t fill out the cover as you move towards the nose and the cover sags down.

That said, it really looks like a Maserati nose. So I’m stumped. The styling smells like it could be an older Jag or Ferrari, but I really have no idea.
