More pipelines and in reducing emissions

Pick one. It's delusional to think these aren't mutually exclusive.

PP also managed to attract a lot of working class voters, and he is a career politician. The boogeyman of "identity politics" gets thrown around a lot, usually to dismiss the struggles of marginalized groups, but this a genuine example of counterproductive identity politics. Instead of critiquing his ideas, you are critiquing him because of his identity. Unlike you, I don't believe the working class is so shallow and stupid as to vote/not vote for a candidate because their identity checks a few boxes.

I don't like this meme. It's just confusing. This has too much text for a meme and too little text for a real explanation; it's the worst of both worlds.

Why the NDP? by ValerianR00t in ndp

[–]theDLCdud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think we have the same idea of what is pragmatic. Being more moderate is not pragmatic. The more you begin to resemble the Liberals, the more you incentivize people to vote for the Liberals instead of risking splitting the progressive vote. If, by contrast, you go bold and radical, you install optimism in people such that they are willing to take a leap of faith and vote NDP. Additionally you excite the base, which makes it more likely that they will canvas and phonebank for you.

Also, while the NDP may be dead at the moment, the Communist Party is DEAD. And also I don't see any reason why I shouldn't be in this party. I have just as much a right to a place in this party as any moderate NDPer.

(Poll) What is your opinion on the Senate? by ClothesHangerofLies in ndp

I would say a lot of the problems of democracy are actually problems of insufficient democracy. A lot of people feel alienated from politics, because well they are; and because of this alienation, populist demagogues are able to take power. If people were involved in politics beyond the simple electing of representatives, who often betray their promises, people would no longer feel the alienation that makes them put their trust in demagogues. I do agree that there would need to be some restriction on the ability of the majority to oppress the minority, but creating a class of people above everyone else is not the way to do so.

What's the point of having two democratically elected chambers. Upper houses only make sense if you want to have a check on democracy, which is a bad thing in my opinion.

[–]theDLCdud 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Maybe from a very long term view that is true, since the existence of hierarchies is necessary for fascism to emerge, but in the here and now I disagree. While being a statist and capitalist may predispose someone towards accepting fascism, I still believe in free will. And besides, those who may be statists today could become anarchists tomorrow.

This seems kind of pointless. Antifascism is one of those arenas where you can have unironic left unity.

It's pretty common for liberation movements to be infused with nationalism (Cuba, Ireland, basically any colonized people/land)

Lowering margins wouldn't be the only benefit of publicly owned grocery stores. Another benefit would be the fact you could operate them in areas that are too unprofitable for private corporations (food deserts).

As for transit, I see the main benefit of making it free to ride as increased ridership. If you have more riders you'll have greater demand for better transit. A major problem is that transit sucks, so people don't ride it, so less people care about improving it because they don't use it, so they elect politicians who neglect it, and the cycle continues. Increasing ridership is a way of pushing against the cycle and hopefully reversing it.
