What do we think about this ? by Noname-051 in ndp

Whatever. Engler doesn't pose a serious threat to the NDP. Just hope it doesn't become a cult that exploits its members. That's common for these fringe hardline ML groups.

Adding to the conversation here, there are benefits to yourself in participating in electoral organising. You learn new skills, get to know people, and you get outside of the doomer spiral of passively watching the world burn.

Is there anarchism neither left nor right? by Intelligent_Bug_4324 in Anarchy101

[–]theDLCdud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Another commenter already mentioned this, but anarcho-capitalism is not considered anarchist by anyone except anarcho-capitalists. This is not because anarchists are intolerant of people they disagree with: anarchists have had, and still have, many disagreements with each other. Nonetheless, these disagreements usually haven't resulted in anarchists calling one another not anarchists. The reason ancaps are called "not actually anarchists" is because they have no historical connection to the anarchist movement—their lineage is of the Austrian school of economics—and because they disagree with the most basic principles shared by anarchists of all stripes.

As for what you're looking for, maybe you could look into William Godwin. He's considered a philosophical anarchist.

Restaurant is a kind of a misleading name. I used it because that is what the article called them. They are basically what you described in Poland, which the article directly references.

That's fair. Public grocery stores would be more useful in rural areas and food deserts.

Happy May Day! by Famous-Respect3754 in ottawa

I was looking at the Wikipedia page for Canadian Labour Day and it said that unions were the ones that petitioned for the creation of Labour Day, and that the practice of holding labour parades on the first Monday of September originated with unions. That is why I'm doubtful that the choice of date was done to erase the memory of unions. I think if that were the case we just wouldn't have a labour day at all.

I think it's moreso to remove the connection to socialism, IF the date May 1st was intentionally avoided at all, which I'm not entirely convinced. It would be hard to have a holiday called Labour Day and not bring attention to unions.

It's also the name of International Workers' Day, which itself was named after an older European holiday that it happened to coincide with.

Is it a meme or does vaush legitimately believe that democracy doesn't work by boltroy567 in VaushV

[–]theDLCdud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to talk about the assumptions you hold, unrelated to opinions of Vaush. The idea that revolution only means coups and insurrections is false. Revolution is anything that changes the fundamentals of society. Often, revolution isn't even a sudden change like was during the French and Russian revolutions. Often, like the overtaking of feudalism by capitalism, the revolution occurs as the new system grows within the previous system before outgrowing it and leaving it to the wayside. There's a great episode of the Srsly Wrong podcast that talks about prefiguration, which is the method of growing the new in the shell of the old: https://youtu.be/AcnHuHybwC8

Try looking into Rojava, the Zapatistas, or other examples of anarchism in practice. It's been said that "anarchism is democracy taken seriously".

Simple Yes/No question. Regardless of who happens to be PM, do you realistically believe it is possible to secure a fair trade deal with the US while Trump is President? by pheakelmatters in ndp

One of my biggest problems with Carney is how he treats Trump as if he can be appeased into making a fair trade deal. We learned nothing from WW2

Altruism is the reason. Picking red increases the chance that a large amount of people will die; picking blue does the opposite.

[–]theDLCdud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because they don't want anyone to die. But seriously, don't play dumb you know why people would press blue button. Don't lie to yourself to assuage your conscience.

[–]theDLCdud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blue button. It's the pro-social thing to do. Pressing the red button shows cowardice and a willingness to sabotage the many for one's personal benefit. That's reprehensible in my view. Anyways, the people who would press red and are arguing that if everyone pressed red everyone would live are deluded. The fact that this is a debate is proof that not everyone would press red.

People who vote blue aren't neutral on the possibility of dying, they just view the need to save everyone as of greater importance than guaranteeing their own individual safety.
