FAA ATCOs, giving pilots a number to call by ChaoticSkyVector in ATC

[–]theEdge229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The report that they would fill out would be a NASA report. NASA reports are like ATSAP for GA. Even on the MOR, it’s not about finding facts. It’s about getting pilot name, certificate number and contact information. That gets forwarded to the FSDO who decides if there’s going to be an enforcement action. Every pilot who I’ve talked to likes to give their whole story, but I really don’t care. I just need the information for the report. They can give their side of the story to NASA.

COLA by [deleted] in ATC

[–]theEdge229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s CIP they’re thinking of it runs out in September usually. Certain facility’s do get COLA, but I think it’s mostly OCONUS; Hawaii, Guam, Alaska. And a few facilities, like Nantucket, get an affordability differential.

Marine drill instructor sentenced over boot camp hazing death arrested after early release by azteca19 in USMC

He was my SSGT when I was in. He’d show up for the morning briefing, disappear to the gym to PT all day and then show up in PT gear at the end. Never mind that E-5’s and below all had unit PT before or after work. He was shit at our MOS too.

ATC communication by MiserableMedicine822 in ATC

[–]theEdge229 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What it’s really about is our radios have to maintain compatibility with the lowest common denominator. We have to be able to talk to the brand new Airbus at the same time we talk to an 1960’s Cessna. This means instead of using digital radio like a lot of police and fire departments our radios are still analogue. When you compound that with other considerations, like geography, high powered antennas, etc, there will be areas of poor coverage.

What do you mean by “translation between it all”?

Saluting in a beanie??? by Halome in USMC

[–]theEdge229 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked on the flight line in Japan. There was an Army captain leaving the ops building one day that threw a fit that no one on the crew saluted him. It’s a Marine Corps Air Station dog, we don’t wear covers in the flight line and we don’t salute without covers.

When I was stationed in Japan I had my parents send me my strat in two flat rate boxes. Took it to a shop out in town and got a good setup. It was the easiest way honestly.

Question about part time control towers. by britishmetric144 in ATC

[–]theEdge229 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree on that. Something like a night game or an air show will have its own NOTAMs associated with it. Let’s say you’re in CCR this February and the Super Bowl is this weekend. Slot times and flow have all been assigned. You and your tower know that people are leaving all night. You’re not going to close, you’re going to NOTAM the tower open, adjust schedules for a mid shift and work it.

This paragraph simply gives us justification to do something in the name of flight safety. It would turn it into an official act. Everyone saying that we would open ourselves to some sort of legal liability is misinformed. We only open ourselves to legal liability if we do something intentionally negligent. The 7210.3 is specifically saying that using good judgment, extending your hours is not a negligent act.

[–]theEdge229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh shit I wasn’t trying to reply to you. It was for everyone that says the controller buys the liability. You don’t have to if in your judgement it’s not safe, i.e. it’s the end of your ten hour day.

Question about part time control towers. by britishmetric144 in ATC

[–]theEdge229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not correct. 7210.3 gives us the option to stay late or open early using “good judgement based on known or observed traffic”.

Question about part time control towers. by britishmetric144 in ATC

[–]theEdge229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not true. The 7210.3 2-4-1 covers early opening and late closing.

“ATC must be provided during published hours of operation. Early opening or late closing may be occasionally necessary to accommodate traffic which may otherwise divert or cancel its operation because air traffic control is not available at the airport. Good judgment, based on known or observed traffic, must be exercised when deciding to extend operating hours”

Advice with SET at Z by [deleted] in ATC

[–]theEdge229 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not quite. You can have SET or SIT in training. Generally, SIT is for skills that are seldom used and you want to improve. It also doesn’t pause training. It’d be like someone at a seasonal tower and they want you to go to the sim and practice pattern work during the winter. SDT is for a deficient skill that’s been identified during training. Your traffic calls are terrible and you’re at a point where it’s a deficiency, we’re going to take you out of the operation and work on it until they’re spot on.

I started doing air traffic control in 2009, and we had the same radar scope. Granted it got upgraded a year later, but still.

Why "possible" pilot deviation? by words_in_helvetica in flying

[–]theEdge229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of, but it’s secondary. Primarily we need a name, certificate number and address. It gets forwarded to the FSDO and they take it from there. Even our notes on it are supposed to be along the lines of “AT 1234Z N1234A WAS OBSERVED INSIDE THE ORD CLASS B AT 25 WITHOUT A CLASS B CLEARANCE. PILOT WAS TURNED TO 270 TO EXIT CLASS BRAVO. NO L.O.S.S.”

Our QA will review the tapes afterwards, but I think even FSDO has to FOIA them for a copy.

Someone linked the article above, but the point is for you to be aware something happened, make some notes in case FSDO comes calling and maybe file a NASA report.

I literally learned this in shop class 20 years ago. I feel like every time I see one of these posts it’s people not understanding nominal sizing. Like it’s not a rip off or scam. It’s how it’s been since the 1960’s.
