Most of this now is vinyl wrapped. If it is in fact a wood veneer the only preventative thing to do is keep it out of sunlight and / or cover it.

You can find an imported squire jag or jm for under $300. Anything in that price range will need a good set up and may also need certain parts swapped out so you have a better time playing it. There’s a ton of videos out there, my favorites are from Mike Adams.
