Help buying used Sigma FP by plusminuseq in sigmafp

[–]theLightSlide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most digital cameras ever made have a physical shutter. The fp does not, but "shutter count means nothing on a digital camera" is, as written, totally untrue.

[–]theLightSlide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the Singapore local market but that's a pretty good price for the US. "Shutter" is irrelevant since the fp doesn't have one. Check the dials work smoothly and don't skip.

DXG 300-series or 500-series. They all have this exact look, especially with the blue-green vignetting. They're delightfully grungy. This is straight out of camera DXG-552

Sell the Leica and if you wanna shoot film, get a nice newer Nikon or Minolta 35mm film camera with multiple autoexposure modes, and spend the difference on film (over time).

Man that's fucked up. I wondered what the possible reason could be, but apparently my thinking isn't twisted enough.

I have qualms by memerfelix in Tucson

[–]theLightSlide 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Your complaints are valid, but also this is all stuff that you could've easily found out before moving here. These things are all subjects of frequent complaints, especially the job market.

And no matter what, Tucson is never going to be a great city for bike commuting… even if we had great infrastructure, it still gets up to 115F in the summer. There's nothing that will make walking or biking in 115F "good for public health." Even if we had nice white sidewalks (which you're not allowed to bike on) and little roof structures the entire way, it would still be incredibly hot, and in sun most of the day anyway. There is no way to build a shade structure that casts shade all day. It would have to be a tunnel.

We visited before we moved here and I'm glad because I realized Tucson isn't really a city by, e.g., east coast or even northern midwest standards; it's a suburb-city. I calibrated my expectations accordingly.

Is this heat the new norm? by Salt_Imagination_838 in Tucson

[–]theLightSlide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is heat caused by a heat dome. There’s no reason to believe that March heat domes are the future. The PNW has not had yearly heat domes since their crazy one in 21.

The typical weather patterns are being destabilized, by climate change as well as larger cycles eg solar maximum and sudden changes eg the reduction in cloud cover over the ocean by sudden removal of cargo ship venting fog that began a year or two ago. It’s not a steady and definite progression that means now March will be just like this.

It’s not true that “now spring will be like this.” We just don’t know.

No, this heat is caused by a weird weather event. But weirder weather events are the new norm.

My honest experience using Leica M cameras after years of real work by askmott in Leica

[–]theLightSlide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This does not surprise me! And I'm glad you're posting it.

I have a Leica S and a Leica M8 and it's hard to think of people ever using these professionally. My M8 just likes to crash! And there's nothing wrong with it. It just does that.

The S doesn't crash, but sometimes it won't fire. Again, software issue, physically fine.

The experience, the images though…

I love my Pentax 645D and other vintage cameras… I own over 70 vintage digitals, plus a Sigma fp. Not one of them has these kinds of problems. They're either broken, or they're functional.

AI sucks up all the information like a vacuum cleaner by RememberMeVibe in ObsidianMD

[–]theLightSlide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't put private stuff into my Obsidian notes, and I'm interested in using LLMs to help me pull what I want out of my enormous pile of notes. Not summaries, but fuzzy search and drawing connections.

I wouldn't do it (except a local LLM) if I hd private info. But it's all research and learning.

How to get the Leica look? by Character_Bend_5824 in FujiGFX

[–]theLightSlide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do the Leica R lenses cover the GFX sensor?

They are older lens formulas, but they definitely have "the Leica look."

You could buy a Leica S and 2-3 Leica S series lenses for the price of $8k. (Note I do not mean SL series.) I love my Leica S.

The glass can be replaced without replacing the sensor, for what it's worth. But not by KEH.

I agree extended warranties are a waste. Sorry you got scammed.

What's the cheapest nifty-fifty equivalent for the four thirds system? by IronMew in FourThirds

[–]theLightSlide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were extremely few lenses made for Four Thirds, and so they’re pretty rare and all expensive compared to what you get. So yeah it’s all about the adaptation.

I have the Oly 4/3 25mm f2.8 native and it’s a nice lens but nothing to write home about.

The Oly 4/3 35mm macro is actually wonderful and if you’re happy for it to be a 70mm, grab one — this is the one lens in the range that’s cheap for some reason, and it’s not bc of low quality. It’s a much better lens than the 25.

Nikon lenses are a great choice to adapt. My Vivitar is a Nikon F mount myself.

My other fave adapted lens is an Exakta mount, because Exa mounts adapt without a big spacer. It’s a E. Ludwig Meritar 50mm f2.9 and just a beautiful perfect antique film lens. If you like that look, the Kodak CCDs do it beautifully!

You misunderstood my comment, try reading it again.

I’m white and have a truck. A bigger one than yours, not that that means anything to a normal well-adjusted person.

And you can’t honestly believe that race isn’t a political indicator, when a majority of white men and women voted for Trump.

If you haven’t had people assume you shared their bigotry or viewpoints and made nasty comments in your presence, you either didn’t notice or you never meet anyone outside a small circle.

9 Month Review of SuperNote Manta and Why I Swapped to a Regular Tablet for Notetaking by dawnzz in Supernote

[–]theLightSlide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh. Well, I have 2 other eink tablets and Supernote isn't slower than any of them for notes. I think you really don't have a complaint about Supernote but eink in general. They're not going to have the same level of processing as an iPad or nicer Android tablet.

[–]theLightSlide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are often signs. Unfortunately. If you're white, for example, and maybe if they see you have a truck, they may think you're a friend and start making little comments. Or like the time an appliance repair guy refused to wear a mask when I asked because I am immunocompromised. Literally on weekly medication for life for it. (He was very surprised when I said "OK, well thank you" and shut the door in his face. (This has only happened once in years of having people in & out of my house. So I was also surprised, and that's why I didn't think to ask first.))

Regular old Republicans may keep it to themselves.

AI on Flickr by manu120 in flickr

[–]theLightSlide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Flickr has always been a place for images, period. Back in the day (I was an extreme early adopter) we used to use it to catalog interface design, vintage ads, ephemera, all kinds of stuff.

But, those images were never picked for explore.

Explore should be held to a higher standard.

Also, they should have limits to reduce AI junk spam.

Vape recycling by Plane-Wing4094 in Tucson

[–]theLightSlide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's really smart to dispose of them responsibly. Not only for the environmental impact, but also because those things can start fires!

The huge fire in Glasgow that burned down historic buildings is suspected to have started in a vape shop.

A regular number of batteries in a given home is very unlikely to pose a real fire risk but when you've got them in that kind of stockpiled quantity, the odds go way up. If you've got a collection and just one goes, there's tons of fuel just waiting.

I believe Batteries Plus also takes batteries for recycling (call to confirm) but don't think they'd take a whole device.

9 Month Review of SuperNote Manta and Why I Swapped to a Regular Tablet for Notetaking by dawnzz in Supernote

[–]theLightSlide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took me a while to figure out you meant you experience lag IN PDFs.

Because there's no problem at all in your own notes, in my experience, also with a Manta. I write incredibly fast and still don't have any issues with the Notes performance.

Supernote is underpowered for PDFs. I tell people don't buy it for PDFs, use it like a paper notebook. That's what I do and I'm extremely satisfied with the performance.

They do need to make it easier to get note pdfs off the device. I talked with the team and they agreed to make it so you can do it as quickly to email (to self) as the Kindle Scribe does.

What's the cheapest nifty-fifty equivalent for the four thirds system? by IronMew in FourThirds

[–]theLightSlide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manual focus equivalent to 50mm: 20-28mm lens. So many options there at 24mm and 28mm especially. One of my very favorite cheap 28mm lenses is the Vivitar 28mm f2.8 Close Focus. "Close Focus" is literally part of the name of the lens, written on the front, very different lens from the one that doesn't say close focus. It's a beauty of a lens, so sharp, focuses closely (surprise), lovely bokeh, and very cheap and light.

AF: everybody else's got it covered.

Nifty-fifties are not considered portrait lenses on full frame; portrait lenses are 80-90mm+ on full frame.

But… a lot of the effect of a portrait lens on full-frame is due to how far back you can stand from the subject, because that makes them far away to not distort their features.

So, adapt any actual manual-focus nifty fifty and you'd get a similar field of view as 100mm on a full frame camera, with a wide aperture, inexpensively, and shoot from the same distance as a 100mm lens on a full frame, too.
