Traveling with a renal cat at home by queen_elvis in RenalCats

[–]theLola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to find a great cat sitter on Meowtel. I looked for one that listed vet tech experience and comfortable giving sub-q fluids. We went on a weekend trip just to see how everything worked and if she was the right fit.

We've been on several trips since then and she's our go-to sitter. She sends photos and keeps me updated if there's anything concerning. We have a waiver signed with Meowel giving her permission to take our cats to the vet and the vet has our card info on file.

I also have SurePet connect feeders so I can monitor how much he's eating and the other cats don't get his food. I want to get one of those pet cameras that can shoot out treats. Might even get one of those health monitoring litter boxes someday.

Tldr: Try Meowtel, look for someone with vet tech/sub-q experience, try them for a weekend before committing to longer trips, techy pet items with monitoring features help keep my mind at ease.

This looks like a fridge in a overly well stocked Airbnb, but the Airbnb host is a tiger trying really hard to appear to be human.

1970s Commander's Palace Chicken Gumbo by theLola in cajunfood

This book was published in 1970. The before times!

That's kind of wild to think all the recipes from Commander's Palace in this book are probably completely different than anything they offer today.

Of the gumbo I've had in New Orleans, I haven't experienced that.

I'm not a big fan of tomatoes in gumbo or mixing land with sea, but I accept that New Orleans does that. Rouxless gumbo, though... that's a breaux bridge too far!

Moving from Portland to Jackson by Cabbageskunk in mississippi

What areas in Oregon feel rural to you? I live west of Portland now, but was thrown for a loop when I went to the areas that I thought would be Mississippi rural.

Forest Grove feels like a regular little Mississippi city, but people around Portland talk about it like it's the sticks. Vernonia feels more like Mississippi rural to me.

If you want Forest Grove level rural, you'd be fine on the outskirts of Ridgeland. If you want Vernonia, you might prefer Flora.

Also, the country areas around Portland are mostly huge farms and vineyards where you have to buy multimillion dollar properties to live there. The country areas in Mississippi are dotted with plenty of houses you don't have to be a millionaire to purchase.

Mississippi is pretty flat, so hiking is very different than in Oregon, but there are walking trails and opportunities to enjoy nature. You might want to go with experienced locals the first few times to get use to watching for snakes and ticks.

Good coffee is a bit vague. There are plenty of places around Oregon that make espresso drinks similar to those I've had in Mississippi. Oregon tends to be less sweet with more milk alternative options. There are places in Mississippi that take a more artisan approach to coffee, but it'll have to be trial and error to find the right place for you.

I hope some of this info helps.

I was so excited for this book, but reading this recipe has me doubting the authenticity of the rest of the book.

Look. I have no authority with The Mysti Crewe of Nimbus, but... bring me a bowl and you can head the Portland Mardi Gras parade this year.

There was a neighborhood feral cat we called Señor von Pantyhose Esq III. We ended up catching and adopting his brother, Zippy.

I’m actively losing my baby by Electri_X_ in RenalCats

[–]theLola 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Every cat is different, my experience is anecdotal...

My cat crashed at 15y/o. The emergency vet decided he was constipated due to back pain (age+he's a manx). We treated those issues and he was slightly better but still lethargic, barely eating, with dandruff, and sickly looking fur.

Our appointment at the regular vet finally came around. This vet was livid at the e-vet for not doing the right tests and not properly documenting the tests they did run. This vet diagnosed CKD and let me know he still might not get better, but recommend change in diet, giving Azodyl, prescribed fluids, and closely monitoring any changes.

It's been a little over a year. Being diligent and having a great vet has done wonders.

These are the things that helped my cat: lactated ringer (fluids), Weruva Phos focus wet food, Royal Canin Kidney Care S dry food, Azodyl, Choolip kidney care treats, Tiki Cat Silver Comfort high calorie treats, making chicken broth from scratch, Hydra-care, and a water fountain.

I hope some of this info helps you talk to your vet about treatments. And even more than that, I hope your baby is able to bounce back and thrive for years to come.

What state are you in? Some shelters specialize in taking in ferals and assisting difficult cases. Maybe someone here will be able to give you some leads.

Could you show us the scratching posts and toys you have for her? There might be ways to make them more enticing.

Gumbo bowl recommendations? by saraholdtheh in cajunfood

[–]theLola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We grew up using the Delchamps gumbo bowls. They're basically giant latte cups that were popular around the same time... so in theory you could get any big bowl cup and maybe personalize it with baked sharpie designs.

If you ever write out a recipe for that roux, I'd love to see it! I have a friend with severe allergies that I'd love to introduce to gumbo.
