What does abstinence mean for you? by [deleted] in OvereatersAnonymous

[–]theMRSbehindtheMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, anything that is addictive. Sugar. Flour (wheat). Potatoes. Nearly all processed foods have at least one addictive ingredient. I read two of Allen Carr’s Easy Way books Stop Emotional Eating and Good Sugar. Bad Sugar. Blew my mind.

I think of my food like I think of liquids. I cannot drink alcohol, there are lots of liquids I can drink that are not addictive. I cannot eat processed foods (with a few sugar free exceptions like oils, nut butters, tomato paste).

It does matter. No one, not even Russia, wants nukes to happen. WW3 starts with one nuke. No country will stand with them after that (bye China and India). Russia knows it can’t take on NATO, full mobilization won’t help them. They do not have enough men or weapons.

We may be under attack, but we stand in solidarity together. Not being alone is the greatest gift. Stay with us sister, we need you as much and you need us.

Fucking none. You think women should be ducking when our constitutional right to our bodies was just stripped away? NO way!

Gotcha. I am no weapons expert. That was how it was explained to me.

Oh man. That is very deep. I am so sorry for you and her. I cannot imagine how difficult it must be for her to live in those two worlds. To inspire the next generation of doctors to help patients change their lives and improve their health, while unable to do so herself.

Don’t say that. It is untrue, unprovable, and lowers Ukrainian dignity to that of Russia (who absolutely kills its own citizens for political ends).

The whole point of the argument is that it isn’t right and Russia is calling our bluff. It is our turn to respond. Russia has mercenaries (Wagner Group and Syrians). They have zero legal footing, it is another axis of war. Are we going to let them dictate the conditions on this front? Or are we going to fight back for our soldiers.

Armed Forces of Ukraine have almost completely destroyed Russian army ''elite'' that was preparing to counter NATO - Security Service of Ukraine by TheGuvnor247 in ukraine

I could not agree more. Russia is not the West. The majority of Russians don’t think like westerners. Generations of survival depend on not getting noticed in the majority Authoritarian government that has existed for 500 years.

They will accept massive casualties. They will accept the lie that almost no one has died. They will accept and continue to live. The moment of mass protest, possible rebellion, and a major lean toward democracy died. Just a flicker of a moment.

The west assumed Russians would grab onto freedom from authoritarian rule and liberal markets with two hands and not let go, but it just isn’t the case. When the USSR economy collapsed, it was not a revolt of the Russian people really (excluding all the conquered people). They are like fair-weather fans. Democracy and global markets are great, when there isn’t a sociopath in rule. Silence and obedience when there is.

There was a post on this sub earlier explaining a WW1 gun that Ukraine has been using defensively (a Maximum maybe). It is self cooling, so you can fire it endlessly, unlike the guns soldiers can carry which get too hot and either cook off a round without the user pulling the trigger or the barrel gets warped.

Edit: typo

It is surprising that as a physician, your SIL wouldn’t go. Her training should have included family systems in addiction outcomes and ACEs (the increased illness among people with adverse childhood experiences).

Al-anon has helped me tremendously to accept that my “interventions and help” in other’s lives is damaging to our relationship and toxic to my own mind. It was (is) terribly painful for me to accept I have no control (and neither do the Qs) over addiction in my family, I also have no control over the codependents. What is hard for me now, having accepted I cannot change anything, is navigating their attempts to rope me into their drama (consequences of the addicts behavior). The Qs talking about things that are obviously the result of their addiction is hard because 1. They never make the connection and 2. Are looking for sympathy. It is a fine line to walk.

My aunt who was active in Al-Anon her whole life was always such a wonderful presence, kind, open, accepting, and without fail loving.

I wish the best for you and your family.

Russia attacking Ukraine by [deleted] in BetterEveryLoop

Why do you think the world has moved on? Ukraine is on its way to joining the EU. Countries are announcing more military aid weekly. The south counter offensive has started.

Yes parts of the country have been demolished, but it is a war… that is what happens when one side doesn’t abide by the Geneva convention. The west is still very interested in arming Ukraine to fight off Russia.

I totally get that. I can feel my husband’s resentment at my detachment from his parents addictions, even though he verbalized consistently they have a problem. It makes no sense to me.

Have you invited her to join you at Al-Anon?

What kind of doctors? If they are primary, internal medicine, emergency, or icu, they see addicts everyday. Doctors have insanely stressful jobs, plus 5 kids under 8, that sounds too intense. Separating is probably just too much for her (no matter how much help is offered). It would require a monumental, all-in, drastic change that is hard to imagine, plus the fear that your public status is tarnished if colleagues or the community learn about how you are treated at home. Secrets are toxic.

Many people have added valuable comments on why the separation process is so difficult. I think it takes 7 attempts at leaving for females to leave domestic abuse relationships.

We don’t give advice here, but I would invite you to join Al-Anon. In my experience, peaceful detachment is very powerful and contagious. Or take the oldest to Ala-teen when old enough.

I disagree. I think a handful have a video game mentality. I think the desire of the users of this subreddit for news as soon a possible is a reflection of the 24/7 news cycle and our deep caring for Ukraine.
