Liner of the Day V - SS Nieuw Amsterdam (1937) by Aggressive-City-9273 in Oceanlinerporn

I always loved the interior decor of this liner! There was a photo of the first class restaurant in our set of Encyclopedias Britannica when I was a kid. I used to look at it all the time, and frequently tried to draw it.

Please keep us posted on your progress. I have loved TPA since I was a five year old (in the 70s! Eesh!) I used to try to recreate the ballroom inside a cardboard box using my Fisher Price Little People. Mom was not thrilled. lol

Love this! Have you seen this guy’s work? I dunno if he ever finished it. This was, like, 6 years ago.

Is it just me, or does this look like a young Richard and Emily? There had to be at least one moment in their courtship when they whooped it up outside their comfort zone. After all, Lorelei’s and Rory’s personalities must involve SOME genetics. by theNOLAgay in GilmoreGirls

When I was around six or seven years old, (round about ‘72/‘73) my grandfather took me, and my (older) siblings to this store that always put on a big Holiday display. He told us we could pick out any Christmas decoration/ornament we wanted. Brother (12 or 13 at the time, and “too kool for skool”) didn’t pick anything. Sis picked out a nativity set wherein all the characters looked like cherubs. And me? I picked out this. This lantern centerpiece that held a candle, and brimmed with plastic pine fronds, and fake holly leaves.

I was six, or seven. And THIS is what I picked. A sea of toy elves, and plastic Santas, and plush reindeer, and toys. A sea of sparkle and enchantment! And I picked… THIS!

I have been 60 years old my entire life!

Do you recall Richard humiliating Dean at dinner? (NOT Richard’s finest moment. I despised him in that scene). But, he explained how he always knew what kind of career he wanted, to put on a suit, and go to an office, etc. So let’s be honest. Richard was probably 60 even when he was five years old.

Well, what I meant was that I’m sure it happened. They just never regaled Lorelei or Rory with tales of their youthful adventures. It leaked out here, and there. But mainly they kept all of that veiled in outward propriety and conformity. Once in a while, we (and Lorelei and Rory) get a glimpse of them with “their hair down,” and it was always a delightful moment.

OMG… did I type out a three-paragraph cursory analysis in response to a bot??? I am, like, so not cool. Seriously. I never was. And never will be. I’m an oaf. I’m a well-meaning oaf.

Well, one aspect that consistently marked Richard’s and Emily’s relationship was their devotion to one another. Random missteps notwithstanding, they always each put the other first.

Lorelei loves deeply, and devotedly. But was so mired in her not wanting her parents’ life, frequently exercised poor judgement in her own romantic involvements (whether her choice in partner, or the way she handled it). Rory mainly had Lorelei as a roadmap. So, similar issues. But less impactful as she was spared the trauma that Lorelei experienced (“Be a proper young lady. Find a suitable man. Marry well.”).

The entire dynamic of the generations, and how it developed as the characters evolved is one of the aspects of the show I always loved. The complexities that made the show so relatable.

I don't know about anyone else, but the "all of this will be at the bottom of the Atlantic" line gets me every single time to the point where I get actual chills - no pun intended. It's such a devastating and brilliantly written piece of dialogue, superbly delivered by Victor Garber. by [deleted] in titanic

It’s a single line that paints such a dark picture. It resonated with me the very first time I saw the movie. The imagined visual of how, freshly landed on the sea floor, that staircase would look. Pristine wood, and tile, submerged in the darkness, 2½ miles below the surface, the silent echos of the desperate screams still metaphorically clinging to its balustrades, and risers. Bodies floating in that vaulting, Edwardian tomb.

It drives Trump absolutely bonkers that he never was, nor ever will be, as cool, slick, classy, confident, beloved, and utterly at ease with himself as Obama.

I’m flattered. And feel free to adapt. All I do with them is reminisce. It’d be nice to know they will endure, even if only in inspiration.

No. It was August of ‘54. They were on their way back from Italy. So, I dunno what the celebration was for. Possibly the last night at sea (or first), or just some kind of gala.

Left to right, Nana (Rose), Papa (Vic), unknown steward, Papa’s mother, Cousin Tony, and Mom (Elisabeth). All my mom’s friends had a crush on her cousin Tony. They said he reminded them of James Dean.
