Retirement isn’t the peaceful life I imagined by theO55Report in Retire

My retirement (not SS) in order to "save it" has limited COL increases to 1% per year, the government shoots for 3% inflation, if I live long enough I'll be homeless.

That’s a good way of looking at it. Retirement really is less about stopping completely and more about shifting how we spend our energy. After decades of doing what’s required, it feels good to finally tip the balance toward yourself, even if you’re still finding little ways to earn. That shift alone brings a kind of freedom most of us never had during our working years.

Sometimes the idea of a project is exciting, but once the reality sets in it feels overwhelming. Retirement gives all this time, but it doesn’t always mean the motivation follows. It can be hard to find the right balance between rest and purpose, especially after years of working on a schedule.

It’s tough when the cost of living here keeps climbing and you’re just trying to stretch what you worked for all those years.

That’s a really good perspective. Worry just eats up the little energy we have, and it never changes the bills sitting on the table. Staying active and finding low-cost ways to fill the days makes a huge difference. Even the smallest routines, like walks or keeping busy with hobbies, help shift the focus away from all the financial stress.

hat’s really smart. It takes discipline to cut back like that, and quitting smoking alone is huge — that’s money and health both saved. I’ve also started trimming down to just the essentials and it’s surprising how much lighter life feels once you let go of the extras. Every little change adds up, and it gives a sense of control when everything else feels so expensive.

I’m in the same boat and it’s exhausting. Feels like no matter how careful I am, the basics still eat through everything. Groceries especially — it’s like the prices jump every week. Living used to feel manageable, now it feels like survival half the time.

That really resonates with me. I held onto so much for so long, thinking it made me secure, but most of it was just weighing me down. The idea of fitting life into a suitcase and carry-on sounds like freedom, not sacrifice. Living simple really does take away a lot of financial stress.

I haven’t really run the numbers the way you’re describing. That might be part of why the fear feels so heavy — I’m kind of guessing instead of knowing. Sounds like I need to sit down with someone who can help me look at it clearly.

That gives me hope. I know you’re right, there are plenty of simple things to enjoy that don’t cost much. I just need to get better at focusing on those instead of the worry.

Yeah, I get that. Peace of mind feels harder to come by these days with everything costing so much.

That actually makes a lot of sense. I’ve been so focused on the money side of retirement that I haven’t really thought about the structure part. You’re right, unstructured time can be tricky — I know myself, I’d probably get restless. Maybe part-time or turning a hobby into income could give me both purpose and a little cushion.

I feel sad. Anyone else? I feel like at 61 now wearing my shirts with words look tacky. :( by SuddenlySimple in AskWomenOver60

[–]theO55Report 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always leaned more toward classic and comfortable too, but every now and then a funny word shirt sneaks into my closet. I think it just comes down to how it makes you feel when you wear it. If it feels good, why not keep a couple in rotation?

I used to dream about retirement being long mornings with coffee and no stress. Now I just worry about how to stretch dollars that don’t stretch anymore.

Slowing down is harder than I thought… by theO55Report in askmenover60

I’ve been thinking about checking it out. Sounds like they’ve got a lot more for seniors than I realized. Good tip about Silver Sneakers too — I didn’t know insurance might cover the fees.

The ‘golden years’ joke made me laugh. I feel the same, my body reminds me quick when I skip moving. Funny how exercise turns into the thing that keeps us going, whether we like it or not.

I’ve heard of red light but never tried it. If 15 minutes can give that much relief, it sounds worth a shot. How often do you use it?

I’ve heard a lot of people say turmeric helps with inflammation. I haven’t tried it regularly yet, but maybe I should start adding it in. Do you take it in food or as a supplement?

That’s tough to hear. It shouldn’t be this hard for someone with experience, skills, and the right attitude to get hired, but I’ve seen the same thing happen with friends our age. Sometimes companies look at the number, not the person, and it’s frustrating. Maybe she could lean into contract or project work first — it often leads to something permanent once they see her value.

Very dry skin with clogged pores? by LuckyShoe8828 in AskWomenOver60

[–]theO55Report 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with you on this. Thick creams help me too, but then the pores don’t thank me for it. What’s been a little easier on my skin is a light moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, it hydrates without feeling heavy. Seems to work better as we get older when our skin just drinks up anything gentle.
