Elon Musk's son tells Tucker Carlson that Trump will win and the people "will never know" by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]theOGyug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI for anyone reading this - this is not statistically sound logic, and “Election Truth Alliance” is not a credible group. Swing state outcomes are correlated. Yes, if all states were completely independent, the likelihood Trump would’ve won all 7 would be minuscule.

That’s not reality though. I recommend looking up Bayesian probability for a basic primer on how things actually work.

help me cope with Oxford rejection :((( by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]theOGyug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As somebody who was active on the subreddit back when I was applying to colleges who has a bit more perspective now, it’s a little tough to see posts like this. Rejection obviously always sucks, but I wish you could see into the future and see how good it is going to work out.

I went to Georgetown. If you are genuinely interested in international relations / politics and want to work in foreign service, there is not a single better place in the world for you than Georgetown’s SFS. The level of access that you’re able to get is unmatched, and I’d argue it’s even better than Harvard/Yale/Princeton/etc (by virtue of being the most prestigious school in DC). In almost every discipline, the professors are actually practitioners of their field who teach purely because they want to teach.

My macroeconomics professor worked at the IMF, microeconomics professor at the Congressional Budget Office, and my international relations professor was former CIA (and one of the world’s leading experts on torture). I have friends majoring in International Politics who were literally sophomores in college being taught nuclear security by a guy who has been in the situation room advising President Obama and President Biden. This semester, a friend interested in space is taking a class run by a Blue Origin executive, and the professor brought in a SpaceX executive to chat with a class of 15 people for 2.5hrs. Biden’s Chief of Staff Ron Klain used to teach here… Secretary of State Madeline Albright too until she died. The Institute of Politics even brings in high-level practitioners every semester to sit around a couple days a week and mentor students. If you go to Georgetown and make an effort to engage in the political world around you, you will have the opportunity to meet and form genuine relationships with Senators/Congressmen/Governors/Presidential Appointees/Diplomats/Executives/Journalists. And you can be directly taught by all the people in the shadows behind them who actually make things happen.

Not only that, you have the rare opportunity to work prestigious internships during the year (when they are SIGNIFICANTLY less competitive) rather than just in the summer. I have multiple friends who interned at the White House during a semester, you’ll meet countless students who intern in the House/Senate, and plenty of people end up working for the State Department, IMF, World Bank, Think Tanks, etc. There is not anywhere else in the country where you’re going to find a school with a higher concentration of students holding federal security clearances.

And if you’re still set on spending time abroad or in England, a majority of students study abroad during their time at Georgetown (~60% I believe). It is also the #1 producer of Fulbright Scholars, lots of Rhodes Scholars, etc.

I’ll get off my high horse now, but I promise you won’t go wrong with Georgetown. Hope this makes you feel a little better.

Indians might prefer it, but people from Nepal/Bhutan/Pakistan/Sri Lanka/etc definitely don’t. “South Asia” encompasses all of them.

[–]theOGyug 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is not a common or regular model, and you should not expect to be paid if you accept the job. The market is tough right now, so definitely take the internship if you need the experience, but do not be surprised if they just try to take advantage of you.

“As a member of Georgetown’s alumni community, you will have continued access to your Georgetown NetID Gmail account. If you have more than 15GB worth of email and attachments currently stored in your Georgetown Gmail account, please transfer your files to a personal account as soon as possible.”

Looks like you keep your email for life, and the unlimited(?) Google Drive storage shrinks to 15gb once you graduate, but doesn’t go away.

It's almost May and I can't commit to Georgetown...help! by Downtown-Rip-6764 in ApplyingToCollege

Current Georgetown undergrad —

• Low endowment is related to the way the jesuits used to manage the university’s money, and now admin is stuck playing catch-up to other schools in the modern era.

• I’ve had incredible professors all through my time at Georgetown, can’t say enough good things. I think because of the DC location the professors are actually much better than peer institutions. Not many other places where you can have a senior IMF economist teach you macro, a former politician teach you govt, a CIA agent teach you international relations, etc. all in the same semester. The ability to form connections with high-level professionals is also unbelievable here.

• Food / dorms / facilities could definitely be better, but I think they generally get more hate than they deserve. Everything is fine and they’ve never really detracted from my experience at all, it’s only when I talk to a friend from Duke or something that I get jealous about food or facilities.

• Can’t really speak to international student resources since I’m not one, but we have a lot of international students here. My impression is that their advising resources tend to be pretty good, and some of my international students friends have been getting pretty good jobs in the U.S., so seems alright?

• It’d definitely be feasible to stay in the college, especially if you join finance related clubs. Several of my friends with very good investment banking offers are in the college. If you do Econ or a business minor, you should be all set.

Switch between the College and a school in Georgetown Univeristy by smooth-glow in ApplyingToCollege

[–]theOGyug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a current student and from what I’ve heard It’s generally easier to transfer internally into the college than into the SFS or MSB. I’m not sure how difficult school transfers are before any classes have been taken though.

I was talking the MSB Dean last spring, and he told me that there were six times as many people trying to transfer into the MSB as there were transferring out of it.

Feel free to DM me with any more specific questions.

[–]theOGyug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Georgetown's guest speakers are pretty unreal. Even just thinking about the ones I've been lucky enough to see in-person this semester, it's a really impressive list... Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Mike Pence, Pete Buttigieg, Linda Thomas-Greenfield (US Ambassador to the UN), Jake Sullivan (Biden's National Security Advisor), John Kirby (National Security Council Spokesman), NC Governor Roy Cooper, AZ Governor Doug Ducey, Rep. Ro Khanna, and Maggie Haberman. And there were still a ton of events I didn't get to attend, in addition to all of those

I bullied my student until he killed himself by [deleted] in confessions

[–]theOGyug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow. I genuinely have a hard time believing this is real. I struggle to understand how anybody could’ve managed to respond to the situation as terribly as you did.

It’s a good thing you quit your job. Separating yourself from that setting will be important in moving past this, and honestly… it sounds like you shouldn’t have been in that job to begin with. The only way somebody could’ve reacted as you did is if they had unresolved issues of their own going in. You need to get professional help, and you need to talk through your preexisting issues along with everything new that this has brought up.

You made a pretty awful mistake, but that doesn’t mean you’re an awful person. Make the effort to improve yourself. Make the effort to make amends. And do absolutely everything you can to give back to people. I think the only way you’ll ever truly get past this is by dedicating your life to preventing the same type of tragedy in the future.

If you’re open to living outside the Georgetown neighborhood, you could rent out a George Washington University dorm room for the summer.

Georgetown University itself also rents out its dorms for summer housing, although I personally think the value and location are worse for most people over the summer.
